Dundee United » Modern Football.....United's style » 27/3/2024 11:24 pm

.... What !!???

- You put the ball in the back of the net.

But to go back to United's "style"  ...ffs !
We are in Scottish diddy division, we're no the team of 95/96 or 1983/84.
1984 was 40 years ago. History. We sound like Dees banging on about 1963 or England 1966.

So forget all the other shit and concentrate on quickly accurately getting the ball up the park into opposing penalty boxes and into the net. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with playing the way you're facing and backwards, nothing wrong with possesion so long as it's quick, accurate and attacking. By the same token, nothing wrong with the odd hoof up the park , or better still a precision long ball - gives the opposition something different to think about. Whereas modern football coaches keep the ball on the deck - fair enough, but not to the exclusion of all else.

We cannot afford to let opposition teams come to Tannadice put 10 men behind the ba and watch us fanny around. We either score first half or let paying fans see our team working their bollocks off trying - if we don't we give the opposition an extra man.

"Style"  ... ffs get a grip !

Patience has been in short supply from some of our fans this season which has been understandable at times. This game on Saturday, you bet your last pound that Ian Murray will be saying 'keep it tight, nick the first goal and the players will drown under the pressure'.

I would imagine that our backline from left to right will be Middleton, Graham, Gallagher and young Miller T. They will be playing in front of a goalkeeper who's form has dipped a little over the past few months.

The above need us on Saturday to be patient and not get too excited when they make mistakes (they 100% will).

Midfield in my opinion we have the upper hand and up front both Watt and Moult MUST take the chances that come our way.

Our guys are under more pressure than theirs, our expectations are greater than theirs. They haven't coped too well of recent, granted but nor have Raith.

Winning a title is never easy but three points on Saturday would put a big dent in the hopes of the fifers.

Good, balanced post.
I'd have McMann if fit.

Surely Wotherspoon will be fit enough for this weekend?

Goodwin quoted in the Daily Record, below.

United will have a near full squad although David Wotherspoon won’t make Saturday’s clash with his former team. Goodwin confirmed: “David is the only one who will be missing. He shouldn’t be too far away and we hope he will be back sooner rather than later"

= a fortnight, minimum

Dundee United » GOODWIN OUT » 16/3/2024 11:17 pm

Presuming Goodwin can't turn things around.  (Beginning to look a bit  of a task)
Presuming McIntyre or any other body wants it.
Presuming Ogren will bite the bullet - after Raith game on that performance.
Won't happen just yet, but like Billy said: shoogly peg.

This.

Wotherspoon at some stage if fit enough.
Tillson at some stage because Goodwin likes him and on the back of good performace at Greenock the other week.
Don't get the fascination with Cudjoe. - Predictable. Can't match it physically.
Stop comittee meetings at corners, just get on with it with young Miller to take them. Every one he takes seems to be wicked.

Ffs can we no talk about the fitba' ?   .... Ah weel it is a discassion board.
- - - - -  - - - -
Axiom of this great great game of ours says one game game at a time - dead set true.
But just the same you can't help but look at some games as being season defining - which that one just might have been.
- Goodwin got it spot on, first of all he saw, or mebbe accepted (kicking Mochrie Meekison Cudjoe intae touch) the need for change, drilling into them the need to be physical. He was radical in change of shape moving  Tillson forward where he was chalk and cheese.
Miller Thompson - struck the mother lode wi that laddie - he's slotting in the middle brilliantly, gets in about, creative at the same time.
Looks like he's seen the best use for Grieve who's best asset is to run round like a headless chicken keeping opposing defenders fae getting up the park in situation like this - ahead 20 mins to go. Plus he seemed to get subs just right. Moult as target man worked to a tee.

So many positives on a personal level:
- McCann 100 games last night, one of these guys doesnae always get the credit he deserves, last night a very effective winger.
- Moult who seems to have found hes mojo.
- Watt - agreed - lazy bastard - the trouble with that is the frustration of them being so utterly gifted, which makes it all the more annoying, in any case I thought the chip come cross to find Moult at back post was an absolute peach.
- Sibbald, Docherty, Holt, Gallacher: good presence, physicality, creativity.

.... Better no get too carried away because we got our noses in front this time which casts a whole different light on proceedings  .... suppose that brings us full circle to one game at a time,

Grieve - no doubt about him, tireless runner - that's the laddies best asset.

Not to single him out, because he wasn't our worst last night (but just because you mentioned him).

He (to me) is very much a 'Goodwin player' i.e. works hard, tracks back and tries to defend, and keeps his shape etc etc.

Only draw back being he contributes absolutely fuck all offensively (what he was signed to do).

He reminds me of Tillson in that regard. I see a pattern emerging.

God forbid Goodwin stays on next season our team would be choc full of nice guys who run about all day, but can't actually play football.

You're cherry picking what I said.
Which was he should have been on their goalie etc etc ...

Other than that, couldnae agree more.

Dundee United » United V Airdrie » 27/2/2024 11:57 pm

Are we doing our best to get promoted by 94th min goal at McDairmid or Dingwall - you're making a sterling job o' it thus far Goodwin.

Saw him the other week on DUTV talking about the depth of our squad - o aye St Johnstone rejects, Ross County reject and I hate to say it the two M's - laddies trying to play mens fitba. ... Another in the hate to say it category, Captain Sicknote - one o these things, it happens I know, but he's been born under a bad sign.

Also this rotation shite - 5 games in 15 days blah blah blah all very well but you do not change  a winning side (Moult out - what was that about ??,)  if Goodwin must change a winning side do it 4 or 5 games into this run when points are in the bank.

Other random moans:
Ref complete and utter tit.

Our corners - doing my nut; complete ineffective, predictable, committee meeting shambles which serve to waste our own time.

This business of flops on ground refs let goalies get away wi: I was under the impression that rule stated as soon as goalie controls ba he has tae get rid in 7 seconds. Instead of which goalie has a high ba perfectly under control does a bellyflop that Tony Watt would be proud of, then it's only when goalie feels like getting up that 7 second count starts ..... this goes back to another Airdrie piss take and ref being weak as piss.

Grieve - no doubt about him, tireless runner - that's the laddies best asset. Now tae me Goodwin should have said the one thing to him at the off - bust a gut son, one focus, break up their play - we Know Airdrie are going to play a high line so one job - get in the goalies face. Instead of which they get the ball in their own half and an occasional half hearted challenge goes in. They own their own half, play game at their pace and dictate terms.

Outhought again - thanks Goodwin, doesnae seem to be too hard at the minute.

Frustrating, disjointed at times yes, but that's the nature of the beast in this diddy division.
Moult's free kick a peach, long time since we've seen one.
Corner, great to finally see goal from corner and thought Watt did the simple instinctive strikers thing well - hitting ball into deck.
Third, fast breaking with width team goal, cut inside, precision finish.- wee while since we've seen one of them.
Oor Wullie MOTM (as usual.)
Tillson gtf, absolute liability.

Any word on Wotherspoon ?

Agree it’s great to see a goal from a corner, but our goal last week was also from a corner!!

Corner - sorry mate ... losing it !      tbf stiil trying to forget that game.

Finally looked threatening at dead balls.
Moult's free kick a peach, long time since we've seen one.
Corners - hitting good areas, great to get result - about time and thought Watt did the simple instinctive strikers thing well - hitting ball into deck.
Third, fast breaking with width team goal, cut inside, precision finish.- wee while since we've seen one of them.
Oor Wullie MOTM (as usual.)
The young Thomson a wee way from finished article but nonetheless excellent.
Cudjoe - still don't know what to make of him, offers something different at times but can be predictable cutting inside into blind alleys.
Tillson gtf, absolute liability.

Any word on Wotherspoon ?

Sair ane, gutted.
So much so that havnae looked at posts, replays, interviews zip since final whistle.

Limit myself to three of many things.
1/ Something way wrong when they're bringing on Easton, Connolly and the goalscorer and we're bringing on Cudjoe (ffs! ) and the young academy laddie.   ... Didnae take Einstein tae see it coming.
2/ Twice in a row ba has looped over Walton's fingertips: coincidence, 2 inches in height, or not quite reading the game well enough.   All other things being equal a good tall goalie will always trump an equally good goalie 2 or 3 inches shorter.
3/ Foreby that their goalie plays a blinder against us once again.
