Keatings departure there makes me ponder who the biggest disappointment in terms of signings we’ve had was. When Keatings came in, I was sure he was gonna be the man to fire the goals to get us out of this division. I at least thought we had gotten the better end of the stick with Murray going the other way.
Who for you is the most disappointing signing we’ve made, in terms of excitement and high hopes when they came in, and their actual output on the pitch?
Ronnie O’Brien?

Now I think of it, Lee Miller has to be mine. I was a kid at the time, and I remember checking the papers every morning, hoping for news on him. I was buzzing when we eventually beat Hearts and Aberdeen to his signature. Scary to think of the money we must’ve been paying back then to beat off teams like the Dons and the Jambos.

Ray McKinnon when he signed as manager. Had real high hopes for him.
As a player, Sergio, he was Brazilian after all and ultimately flopped

Lee Miller, Stevie Crawford come to mind in terms of hype and expectations

Roy O’Donovan and Warren Feeney were very disappointing, but probably not the most disappointing.
Roy O’Brien, ‘Time magazine man of the year’ was a major let down on the back of the hype he got and Joachim Fernández had a great pedigree when he joined us, counting AC Milan as one of his teams.
The biggest disappointment for me was Scott Crabbe who just never took a game when he joined us. I was a just a kid when he signed and I was full of hope for him but it never happened.

Rodney Sneijder, thought at the time was a great signing due to his predigree/namesake, don't think i'v ever been so wide of the mark.

never really recovered from the leg break
Slightly different angle but the despair i got when Alex Nicholls signed when other names were sprayed around was intense. Knew then we were fucked.

I will add Kawashima to the list, at the the time he signed I though it would be a decent move bringing in an experienced keeper with international caps.
How wrong I was to be proven as he was hopeless and it just made the lengthy wait for a work permit feel not worth it in the end.

Alan Irvine - imagine the excitement. Expert footie manager Jim McLean grabs a young striker from Dalglish's Liverpool!!! Even cost us some cash !!! Gotta be good ?? Absolutely hopeless ! Imagine the love child of Thomas Mikkelsen and Brian Graham ....but slower than Demel and clumsier than Coll Donaldson !!!! Heartbreaking....

The log - lest we forget. Good song we had for a while "There's only 2 Alan Irvines'!"

I'll stick to the period 2000-the present.
Lots of disappointments in recent times, from Adam Taggart to Florent Sinama Pongolle as players with decent reputations, to further back Scott Paterson who suffered terribly from injury when he was very early in his United career.
But staying 'recent', and go for Billy Mckay, who I thought would score a barrowload for us. Fuck knows what happened there.
And going further back, probably Arnar Gunnlaugsson, had looked a star on tv in the Premiership, but did nothing in his few United appearances.

very harsh on Scott Crabbe, agree that he never recovered from the leg break in Motherwell cup game, he had some good games for us before then, cracking free kick against Aberdeen in front of the shed.

Should have said that I’m not blaming Scott Crabbe himself, I’m just gutted that he didn’t make as big an impact as he did at Hearts.

2 disallowed goals in his debut, 1 goal and left after 5 appearances.
Spunked £30 on a top with his name on it then tried to pick it off and was left with a glue patch Boli on my back for the season (or two if this was a 2 season strip)

Rojas is the legendary worst signing for me. We actually paid decent money for him!
Agree also with Crawford. When he signed it seemed he could be a breakthrough signing but he offered nothing with his performances for us, a major let down
