Best Individual Performance You’ve Seen From a United Player

As it says on the tin, what’s the best performance you’ve seen from a United player in a game.

Having missed the halcyon days of the 80’s, I’d have to go with Ryan Gauld against Partick Thistle at Tannadice, back when we were on our run of giving everybody 4.

I’d also give a mention to Prince Buaben, I mind a game at Tannadice against Motherwell in the run up to our second Scottish cup win, where Paul Dixon was sent off early in the first half, and we still went on to win the game 3-0, or 3-1. Buaben that day was phenomenal, like watching Yaya Toure in his pomp.

Need help here...Colin Samuel...Scottish Cup tie at Tannadice...about 10 years ago?...phenomenal 1st half performance...think we were 4 goals ahead...2nd half was a fizzle out...Colin Samuel disappeared...but I distinctly remember him individually ripping the oppo apart 1st half...

Re: Best Individual Performance You’ve Seen From a United Player

Two spring to mind and the best i think was Luggy in the 7-0 thrashing of Morton in 1984 - he destroyed Jim Duffy and got 5 goals himself.

I remember Ralph Milne being unplayable and getting two in the 4-0 against Standard Liege in 1983 - it could be argued this was the best of the two due to better quality opposition.

Count myself very lucky to have been around to see performances like these.

Prince Buaben was outstanding in that Motherwell match, JD. Paul Dixon lashed out at Jim O'Brien to get sent off early. Prince himself scored a rare goal, where he took the piss out of the 'Well defenceand seemed to take an eternity to put it in the net, at the East Stand end.

smedDUm, I can't remember it being Samuel who stood out in the Aberdeen cup tie, but I'm unsure if you are thinking about the same game as me: early kick off, Jason Scotland had a very good match in a game we won in front of a poor home support?

I'd have to go for scarpia's Luggy match. Incredibly, the Sunday Mail gave Jim Duffy Player of the Day rating, although Paul Sturrock crept into their Team of the Day.

Robbie Winters against Aberdeen in a 4-0 win on New Years Day 1997 is one that sticks out in my mind as well as the others mentioned.

Erik Pedersen against Oldco / Laudrup the same season in a 1-0 win at Tannadice was also fantastic defensively.

Brian Welsh v Mark Hateley in the Scottiah Cup final.

That is one of the best midfield performances ever in the footage.

I go for seeing Luggy scoring 5 in one game v Morton though.

Ralphie was also brilliant in the away game v Liege, even though that ended 0-0. Those two games get my vote. Mostly our great 1978-1988 performances were due to teamwork, work ethic, incredible mixture of very good players at same time and keeping players for more than 1/2 years.

You sure it was 7-0 against morton? Remember us beating killie 7-0 twice but thought the game luggy scored five was 5-0 and he scored all of them. Missed the game that day so can't be certain of course

Re: Best Individual Performance You’ve Seen From a United Player

Two performances spring to mind for me.

Gordon Petric vs Rangers in 94 cup final, cool as fuck at the back and never broke sweat. Marshalled the defence and brought composure when it was needed most to break the run of loosing cup finals.

Craig Conway in 2010- unbelievable that day and like most of his time at United brought entertainment and joy to the stands. The last ten minutes of that cup final being three up and it allowed the 30 000 Arabs to bask in the sunshine and go through the full song book. My best day as Arab.

Willie Pettigrew (twice), League Cup Final replay scoring twice to give us our first silverware and the 4 goals he scored against Dundee in one game, brilliant goalscorer.

Re: Best Individual Performance You’ve Seen From a United Player

Agree with all of the above.

Prince Buaben was simply awesome in that game we defeated a very good Motherwell 3-0 with 10 men (0-0 when Dixon seen red). He was like a man possessed that day. Interestingly, Gomis was missing that day. Was almost like their partnership being broken up gave him a free licence bomb forward.

A mention for Billy Dodds full debut for Utd. Hat-trick v St.Johnstone with a 'perfect hat-trick' (left foot, right foot header, header). He was fucking unplayable that day.

For 'perfect hat-tricks' i also recall Jon Daly away to Falkirk and Johnny Russell away to Killie (at least i think wee Johnny's was).

Re: Best Individual Performance You’ve Seen From a United Player

As others have said, Ralph Milne in the 4-0 game versus Standard Liege, have never seen anything like it, he was completely unplayable...the other players just kept giving him the ball and he absolutely ripped the opposition (who were a top team) apart
