Been a fair bit of criticism about Luggy's signings whilst Gaffer at Tannadice. So I thought I would break them down and see if they were as bad as some recall them to be.
Bernard Pascual (Le Havre) FREE TRANFER - maybe in the minority but i thought he was a very decent Full Back tbh. Unfortunate with injuries 7/10
Billy Dodds (Aberdeen) SWAP DEAL +700k to UTD - Terrific signing 10/10
Jason De Vos (Darlington) 400k - Hefty fee paid for him. I quite liked him as a player, though he was a raw talent at the time 6/10
Alex Mathie ( Ipswich Town) 700k - Huge fee paid for a Striker who was so so disappointing. To be a wee bit fair to Sturrock not one Utd fan could have criticised the signing at the time. It was an exciting and ambitious signing. Unfortunately it was a gamble that backfired. Definitely his worst signing though given the fee paid 1/10
David Hannah (Celtic) 300k - Another big fee paid and though Hannah maybe wasn't quite as good second time round I thought he still had some good games too. Days were numbered after a punch-up with Alan Combe and then a falling-out with wee Jim. 6/10
Neil Murray (Unattached) FREE - Done well in his short spell at Utd I thought 7/10
Scott McCulloch (Dunfermline) 300k - Horrific player and signing. Always felt we signed him purely due to that free-kick he scored against us in the Sunday night SKY game. 2/10
David Partridge (West Ham) 40k - Another player who was raw but had a modicum of talent. If you can't remember him think of a Calum Butcher type. 6/10
David Worrell (Blackburn Rovers) 50k - After an indifferent start to his Utd career I thought he settled into quite a good Left back tbh. 6/10
Brian McLaughlin (Unattached) FREE - A player past his best who looked like he didn't want to be here. 2/10
John Eustace (Coventry City) LOAN - Excellent young player who was aggressive in the tackle, full of running and had a great attitude 7/10
Joachim Ferraz (Belenenses) FREE - Pretty bowfing overall but did of course score late winners in not one but TWO Dundee Derbies. For that alone I remember him with a wee bit of fondness. 6/10
Tony Smith (Airdrie) FREE - Not good enough for Utd, quite simply. 3/10
Jan Telesnikov (Beitar Jerusalam) 450k - Terrific little player imo. Scottish football perhaps a bit overly physical for him but by far our most talented player at the time 6/10
David Byrne (Shellbourne) FREE - Have zero memory of this lad. Can't recall if he even played a game. 2/10
Raphael Bove (Unattached) FREE - Again have very little recollection of this player other than he was (I think) the first Australian we signed. Think he only played one, maybe two, games max. 2/10
Pat Onstad - Rochester Rovers) 60k - Canada's No.1. never played a game in his 2 seasons at Tannadice. 2/10
Jim Hamilton (Aberdeen) 150k - The big man done well for us I thought. Had zero pace but was a naturally good finisher. 6/10
John McQuillan (St.Johnstone) 50k - A truly awful player. Started to lose faith in Luggy when I read him refer to McQuillan as a 'Steady Eddie' in the press upon his signing. 1/10
Sean O'Connor (Hednesford Town) 30k - Signed from obscurity in the (very) lower leagues of English football. Had a wee bit of ability but ultimately another who probably just wasn't quite good enough. 3/10
Leigh Jenkinson (Unattached) FREE - A very pale imitation of the same player Luggy had at St.Johnstone with him 2/10
Hasney Aljofree (Bolton Wanderers) FREE - A bit like David Worrell in that he started shakily but then turned out solid enough. Scored a couple of belters including an overhead kick v St.Johnstone 6/10
Jamie Buchan (Aberdeen) FREE - Decent enough player. 6/10
Antoine Preget (Unattached) FREE - Had a bit of ability tbh. But couldn't stop getting booked/ sent off. 4/10
Neil Heaney (Darlington) 175k - Probably the signing that sparked the beginning of the end. We needed a 'matchwinner'. We got Neil Heaney. Scored the best 'o.g' I've ever seen (v's Hearts at Tynecastle...a powerful diving header). 1/10
All in all. It wasn't maybe quite as bad as I remembered. Think his BIG' signings (Mathie, McCulloch) linger just because of the huge fees we paid for them. But there were some success stories (Dodds, Eustace, Hamilton).
There was some real dross in there too right enough. A mixed bag to say the least.

agree with most of those, be interested to know what fans of other teams he has managed think of his signings there
Partridge - very raw but was ok at centre half, felt sorry for him when he got played at full back a few times and struggled
Telesnikov - shite attitude
I think Sturrock signed Danny Griffin, definitely a talented player who had some very good games for us. Some bad games as well.

Pascual was actually a Tommy McLean signing and Worrall was a right back. Good run down otherwise though. Alex Smith got the best out of Hamilton, he never looked fit under Luggy.

Who signed Scott Patterson from st Johnstone?
Genuine question, can’t remember if it was Luggy
Did we not get more than our money back for devos as well when he went to Ipswich?
I liked devos, couldn’t play football but could defend like fuck, I don’t think I ever saw him lose a header
The Scott Paterson I remember was signed by Ian McCall from Patrick Thistle. Played about once.
What about Darren Patterson and Iain Jenkins? Weren't they luggy signings?

A real mixed bag, a few really good signings there and some shite.

Mixed bag indeed. However I don't think they are any worse than some of the dross we have just now.

You're quite right. He was right back. I was getting him mixed up with Aljofree.
Couldn't quite remember who signed Pascual. He officially signed the day after Luggy took over. But if you say it was Tommy i'll take your word for it.
p.s. think i might have left out Danny Griffin 6/10

I have a pretty clear memory of Pascual playing in Tommy's last game in charge, at Fir Park. Pretty sure he fucked up for a Motherwell goal..

Pascual definitely a Tommy signing. Signed in the summer of 98. Luggy took over in around September time.

Joaquim Fernandez was a Luggy signing as well. Tried to scrap with Gazza in a friendly, looked like he had ability but totally unsuited to Scottish football. A mate of mine spoke to him in the casino and he said he hated it at Utd.

My recollection was Mark McNally was the culprit. Didn’t like Pascal and first but he grew on me, not brilliant but steady enough

I understand folks' opinions and comments on his time at United and signings back then. Also understand how some think he's involved as a timely popularity stunt by MM but don't feel this is a bad addition to our cause whether paid or not.

Actually, Tassos Venetis was a Luggy signing as well. Again, Alex Smith got more out of him though. I thought he had loads of potential. He was a central midfielder who went past people like they weren't there. He was too lightweight though for a big laddie.
I was actually at the first reserve game he played (alongside David Byrne actually). Me and my old man were there and spoke to Luggy in the exec boxes and Luggy was really enthusiastic about Venetis. John McQuillan played as well.

Oh aye, i forgot about Tassos Venetis.
Quite liked him also. Big, quick and with good feet for a big man.
Unfortunately as you say he wasn't equipped for the rougher side of the game.
