It might be the clubs are in a wee dispute about the venue. They couldn't have entered into discussions until Sunday evening.
Maybe St Mirren want Motherwell and United are keen on Dunfermline.
Livingston are playing at home on the Saturday, so it's probably not going to be there.

Never going to happen but in fairness the final could be at Tannadice as St Mirren were rewarded with a home tie in the semi and United had an away one.

Dunfermline would be the fairest being close to an equal distance. Decent road and rail links and closer to town centre pubs.

As G&C2 said the geography is not fair, I wouldn't expect the game to be played at McDiarmid for the same reason.

I'm surprised the club appear to think the SPFL's choice of venue, and ko time, is suitable for fans, when the decision is quite lop sided. Even a short explanation on the official web site would be welcomed.
