Very difficult to compare players from different generations but I personally think Lionel Messi is already the best footballer the world has ever seen, and in theory he should just be hitting his peak now at the age of 27.
10 years ago today he made his debut for FC Barcelona and since then he's scored 361 goals and provided 131 assists in 434 first team games, and scored 47 goals in 95 games for Argentina.
I know he's surrounded by some of the best players around, particularly Iniesta and Xavi, but the treatment the boy gets every game and he just gets up and runs at them again, incredible.
My favourite out of over 400 goals he's scored, teckle commentary too.

Go go go go go go goal, brilliant link, these type of commentators make Gauldy sound like Messi and Arthur Monford and the biggled collar turncoat McPherson sound shite

That goal is almost identical to Maradonna's against England in '86.
In my lifetime,Messi is the greatest.
I grew up captivated by video footage of Pele though and i find it hard to see past him, despite the fact he retired before i was even born.Perhaps just sentimentality on my part.
I also loved watching Zidane,Maradonna,Hristo Stoichkov and Georgie Hagi.
Oh and Romario,loved watching him.

Agree with messi...agree that 27-28 is usually the age where you peak but i think we'll look back and recognise messi's was about 25
to much at a young age and the injections etc he got when he was a teen will, imo shorten his career... I reckon we've seen the best of the wee genius

Not saying he was the greatest ever, but this performance ranks as one of the best I've seen in a match:

Edson Arantes do Nascimento for me.

Messi used to polish Luis Figo's boots, couldnae lace them though that's why Adidas brought out the multi coloured lycra slippers with studs that we all love watching them slip about in today, I mind my debut when i turned out in a black boot and a brown boot borrowed fae my auld man and still scored the winner in the penultimate fixture for the 45th BB in the treble winning season of 1986. As much as I'd like you to vote for me, forget it, forget Messi, forget Ronaldo, forgot who I'm voting for! Oh aye, Figo was fantastic and he wore boots just for men

Personally grew up thinking Maradonna was the best and would argue the case for many years.
Then I seen Zidane in the flesh and was amazed, captivated by his movement and touches, would be hard to argue that he was better than Maradonna though.
I think Messi is on another level to everyone though, incredible.

BIt out there but Kenny Dalglish for me.
That was in the days when defenders were allowed to tackle.
Messi and Co wouldna have lasted 10 mins back then.

Can't see past Maradonna, although at his peak was not really in my life time. Remember seeing him from 1990 onward, but had been hacked to bits by then. Don't think many of todays starts would have lasted as long.
In my lifetime hard to see past Messi, but did enjoy watching Zidane and Cantona.
