Betfred League cup 2016/2017

Tyrone from STV says the draw should be next week sometime.

For those who didn't know It's July 16th, 20th, 23rd, 27th and 30th.

8 groups of 5.

Live on BT Sport.

Surely It's a better Idea than Pre season games?

Re: Betfred League cup 2016/2017

Agree Rodge.

Much better to have these type of meaningful games in July than meaningless tankings over in Holland or Germany.

I'm sure you have mate.

But my point is the whole argument that  playing and getting gubbed off of these crack sides 'teaches us something' is a bit of a fallacy imo.

Last season illustrated that perfectly. For the cost it occurs the club also I just don't think it's worth it personally.

These type of games where there is actually something at stake will give us all the test we need.

Particularly if we draw Dundee or St. Johnstone.

Re: Betfred League cup 2016/2017

David southern actually said last year at a meeting that pre season would be held here as we couldnt afford to spend the money to travel to abroad to partake in a training camp and friendlies the cost is very high which i agree with is something we cannot afford unless the team/s are funding a major part of it.

a week/5 days training camp could help bond the team especially with alot of new players.

Re: Betfred League cup 2016/2017

We did a pre season camp at RM condor - some of the popstars we have in the squad could use a week of getting their arses handed to them. Old school sand dune runs too.

Then a bit of time spent in England/Ireland would be useful for team bonding.

Re: Betfred League cup 2016/2017

he SPFL today confirmed that the First Round Group Stage draw for the 2016 Betfred Cup will be conducted live on BT Sport from 7.30pm this Friday, 27 May.The special one-off programme by the competition’s exclusive live broadcaster BT Sport will be shown live on BT Sport Europe immediately after the channel’s live UEFA Champions League Final Preview programme.

The Betfred Cup First Round Group Stage draw will be presented by BT Sport’s Derek Rae with the 40 participating teams drawn by pundits Chris Sutton and Michael Stewart. The First Round Group Stage of the Betfred Cup features 40 teams: All 38 SPFL clubs not involved in UEFA qualifiers as well as Highland League champions Cove Rangers and new Lowland League entrants East Stirlingshire. (Edinburgh City, Lowland League champions, make their competition debut as the newest member of the SPFL).Teams will be drawn into eight groups of five teams, on a seeded basis. Fixtures and TV selections will then be announced w/c 30 May.In each group teams will play each other once in a round-robin format on each of 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30 July (subject to live broadcast selections). In the First Round Group Stage there are three points for a win and one point for a draw, with drawn matches in the Group Stage going straight to a penalty shoot-out and the winner of the penalty shoot-out being awarded a bonus point.Eight First Round Group Stage winners and the four best runners-up progress to the second round, joined by the SPFL’s four UEFA qualifying clubs (Celtic, Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian). The competition concludes with the Betfred Cup Final at Hampden Park on Sunday, 27 November..

Re: Betfred League cup 2016/2017

I too like this format.

I think the extra point for the penalty shoot out is a decent idea also.

The club will have to play 5 games in just a few days though so the whole squad will need utilised and we must hit the ground running and win at least 3 of these games and win the group.

Re: Betfred League cup 2016/2017

Maybe our games won't be 3 Saturdays and two Wednesdays if BT Sport want matches to fill their schedules, mind.

The groups are localised: wonder which big club we'll get? They'll play in blue.......

Only actually play 4 games in the group stage do you not?

The north/ south divide should give some interesting ties, we'll prob get ICT, Peterhead, Elgin and Cove right enough.
