Re: Montrose Vs United - Tuesday 14th July (7.45PM)

Ticket sales for Saturday are an absolute shambles. There is one man to thank for that. Goodwin GTF

Re: Montrose Vs United - Tuesday 14th July (7.45PM)

I'd have thought some people would be delighted about that,is it not what the last few pages have been about?

But also, the ticket sales were shite anyway. Its less than 48 hours since the montrose result so its not like there would have been a massive ticket rush since then regardless of result. The ticket sales for the group stages are always shite, and this is a Saturday 7pm game that's on the TV too. But yeah absolutely all Goodwins fault 🙄

Re: Montrose Vs United - Tuesday 14th July (7.45PM)

If nothing else the chaos after Tuesday has been interesting reading. To add a wee bit to the last few pages - I go to Tannadice because it's a way of life. Of course I want to watch exciting football that brings results and major honours along with it, unfortunatley thats not currently reality and it hasn't been for the majority of our existence. Going to Tannadice for me and lot's of others is about supporting the team no matter what and spending time with friends and family. That doesn't mean I'm better than any other fan and everyone has the right to vote with their feet but I also have the right to criticise performances of the team.

Pretty much where I am as well Jim.  The football hasn’t been exciting, however that describes the majority of matches across the SPFL.
JG & Ogren will see the last two seasons 4th & 7th as reasonable returns. If you look at United in the 21C they would be correct.

I was going to say something similar.  If you look at 4th and 7th and a Euro trip or two since coming back up that is, on average, punching above our weight if you consider our 6th biggest club status. Also it's not as if we haven't struggled in the past against wee teams in cups.  I remember being mightily relieved when we scraped a draw against Forfar (with arguably our best ever team) at Tannadice on the way to the Scottish Cup final in 1987.

If Goodwin gets us out of the group and playing mid-table football again then he'll have done his job.  You have to wonder what people are expecting.

I'm just on the side of not bothered if he goes these days as we don't seem to be improving, but as I've said earlier there are also many reasons for that.

"His job is to get us out the group and finish mid-table" is exactly the mentality that's held this club back.

We should be expecting to dominate lower-league teams, play decent football and actually look like we're building towards something. Instead we're making excuses every time we're poor. St Mirren won the thing last season FFS.

Bringing up a draw against Forfar in 1987 is clutching at straws. One game near enough 40 years ago doesn't somehow make it acceptable to look ordinary against smaller sides now.

We aren't expecting miracles. We want signs of progress. Since 2023 when "The Gaffer" was appointed its been excuse after excuse and we are now still hearing "there are reasons for it" while watching the same turgid shite performances. At some point the excuses run out.

To Jim - IT'S TIME TO GO.

Correct. All these people defending him and asking “what do we expect” are all proving my point. Expectations and standards at this club are in the fucking toilet. Two relegations in a decade has really done a number on some people, it’s given them Stockholm syndrome.

Thought I'd chime in a response to this JD and a couple of your other posts. Only not quoting them all to save space.

As a season ticket holder who has renewed this season, despite some doubts around Goodwins ability to take the club forward, I think you make some valid points, but I think it's also a bit unfair to call it accepting of mediocrity.

The football on offer under Goodwin may be poor to watch but I can only really recall a handful of clubs having any sort of sustained success in Scottish football over the last 25 years or so whilst playing good football. Not saying this is all of them, just the ones I remember getting plaudits for their style whilst delivering some sort of success in trophies + league finishes.

Tony Mowbray, followed by John Collins at Hibs (1 league cup under Collins)
Macnamara, pre the sale of GMS/Armstrong (Won f all v St J in the final)
Danny Lennon had a spell of having St Mirren playing some good stuff (1 league cup)
Billy Reid with Hamilton Accies (fell apart a bit when McArthur and McCarthy left)

I don't know whether it's the lack of money in the Scottish game to sign decent players, the standard of managers/coaches, the mentality of players and managers, the 12 team league structure, or any other excuse, but what I do know is it's extremely difficult in this country for teams to play open, exciting football whilst winning games.

I personally, haven't minded (notice I haven't said enjoyed) the stability that Goodwin has given United. Promotion then 4th and 7th isn't to be sniffed at and as accepting of mediocrity that it may seem, I am the sort that thinks it takes several years in the premiership to build a squad, and Goodwin has now had 3 summers with premiership status.

I don't know about Stockholm Syndrome, but I do think the chances of winning a trophy in Scotland by changing the manager probably doesn't change much but the chances of us battling relegation or being relegated probably increases quite a bit. I've given Goodwin way more patience than most supporters I think, but I do expect significant improvement this season, I don't think he's got much good will, if any, left in the stands.

Possibly for the first time I don't think I am disagreeing with you.  I said I'm not bothered if he goes because we are not improving.  I am however more of a realist, I think.

Economically we just don't compete with the Old Firm.  We are also economically a good bit behind Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts.  Their larger fan bases simply mean that we will pretty much always be fighting a losing battle against them.  I've been impressed that the season ticket count has been tracking in the right direction over the last few years (which you have to grudgingly congratulate Ogren and his team on), but realistically, even with attractive football on the pitch, we are still only ever going to have just over half of the support that Aberdeen and the Edinburgh clubs enjoy for home games.

So occasionally we'll punch above our weight and end up 3rd or 4th but more realistically we'll be 5th to 7th come the end of the season and that doesn't take into account other teams punching above their weight (Motherwell and Falkirk last season) or teams punching below their weight (Aberdeen).

I agree that the cups are a concern.  Given what I have said above, the cups are really our only chance of silverware.  Goodwin has consistently shown that when we have to play the group stages of the League Cup he is incapable of steering a path through what should be comfortable wins against lower level opposition.  Granted there are some level of excuses around how many personnel changes need to be made every season and the usual time to gel nonsense, but he is simply failing here, whatever the difficulties he faces.  The last two games are simply not good enough and that is on him.

I don't think I need to apologise for being realistic.  I think we need to consolidate back in the top league for a few seasons and stop being a yo-yo club.  For me the goal has to be qualification for Europe and at least one decent cup run (although that can come down to the luck of the draw).  Last season was disappointing, but with Motherwell and Falkirk having great (and possibly one-off) seasons I think we ended up in a fair league position but cups were poor.

You can forgive poor seasons if you can see progress and the last two games show the opposite.  If we manage to get out the group and he starts the league season in a more positive fashion then I can give him more time, but as I say I won't be disappointed if he goes now, albeit I have little confidence in securing a guaranteed better replacement.

I think we are pretty much saying the same thing in different ways.  I'd definitely add last season's Motherwell to your list (and maybe even Falkirk).  Neither won anything either and it will be interesting to see if they can sustain those levels this season.

I don't think anyone is arguing that we should ignore reality. Of course we aren't going to outspend the Old Firm, and yes, clubs with bigger crowds will always have advantages. But I think "being realistic" is too often used as a way of lowering expectations until we end up accepting absolutely anything.

The reality is that we are not some tiny club trying to survive. We are one of Scotland's bigger clubs outside the Old Firm. We have a large support, a strong history, a good stadium, a proven ability to attract players and, when the club is run properly, we have shown we can compete above our financial weight.

The problem is not finishing 5th, 6th or 7th. The problem is looking like a club with no ambition and no identity while everyone tells us we should be grateful for it. There is a massive difference between accepting our financial limitations and accepting poor standards.

Nobody is demanding we win the league. Nobody is demanding we finish above teams who have double our budget. What supporters want is to see evidence that the manager is making the absolute most of what he has. A clear style. A team with confidence. Players improving. A side that looks better than the sum of its parts.

Instead, under Goodane, we have spent nearly two years watching football that is slow, predictable and painful to watch, while every poor result comes with another explanation attached. Injuries. New players. Rebuilding. Time to gel. Difficult circumstances. There is always a reason, but somehow the performances never actually improve.

And this is the part I struggle with — Goodwin has the safest job in Scottish football. The level of patience and excuses he has been afforded is incredible. At plenty of other clubs, repeated poor performances, embarrassing cup displays and no obvious progress would have had the manager under serious pressure long ago.

The cups are not a minor issue. They are probably the biggest opportunity a club like ours has to create success and memories. That makes repeatedly failing to look competitive against lower-league opposition even more frustrating. Nobody expects us to win every cup tie, but we should expect to look like Dundee United.

St Mirren winning a trophy is not some unrealistic fairy tale. They don't have Old Firm money either. The difference is they had a team, an identity and a belief that they could achieve something. The attitude of "we can't compete anyway" is exactly the thing that stops clubs from competing.

And regarding replacements — that argument is always brought up as if it means we should stick with whoever is currently in charge forever. "Who would we get instead?" is not a reason to accept a manager who isn't improving us. Every club has to make decisions based on whether the current person is taking them forward, not whether there is a guaranteed upgrade waiting on a shelf.

You can be realistic and still have standards. You can understand the financial gap and still expect better. The two are not mutually exclusive.

The biggest issue isn't that we might finish 6th. The issue is that after nearly two years, we still don't know what Goodane's Dundee United is supposed to be. There is no clear progress, no excitement and no sense that we are building towards anything.

At some point, patience stops being patience and becomes acceptance. For me, this is where we are.

Yeah St Mirren won a trophy but they were very nearly relegated, shades of Golac in 94?

Can't argue with any of that.  If you don't mind me saying, comfortably your best post on here too.

Re: Montrose Vs United - Tuesday 14th July (7.45PM)

It’s the constant failing to turn up in cup games that pisses me off most about Goodwin.  I could almost accept the league performances and results if they were accompanied by us having a proper respectable run in cups, being ready for the league cup group games, getting big convincing wins against smaller teams, turning up from first whistle in games against Falkirk, Motherwell and Killie, and going out and having a go at winning games against the bigger teams (not that we’ve had to face any of the so called bigger teams as we are usually knocked out by a smaller team).  The amount of times I’ve been furious after a cup capitulation under Goodwin is ridiculous - Spartans, Motherwell, Killie, QOS, Falkirk (x2), Montrose, Dundee, off the top of my head.  He either doesn’t understand the importance of cup Competitions to the club and supporters or isn’t capable of preparing and motivating the team to play in them.  It’s happened far too many times to the point that I just expect an abject performance and embarrassing exit every time.  The draws have actually been quite kind to us during his time!

Tbf. What we did in the league isn't what that season will ever be remembered for. Likewise for St Mirren 30 years from now the only memory they will take from last season is winning the League Cup.

Morph also spoke about it taking several years to build a premiership squad. We can't build squads over years anymore. This idea that managers should get years in the job like wee Jim did is totally outdated now.
Its a thing of the past for most teams now. The nature of the game and turnover of players at our level means we are effectively starting from scratch every season.

Goodwin’s improved us because the level we were at before he came in was so far beyond acceptable it isn’t true. I’m not saying Jim Goodwin has done a terrible job in his time here, far from it, on the whole he’s been one out more successful managers of the 21st century. He also isn’t the man to take us forward, as anyone with eyes can see. This summer was the ideal time to part ways, and go for a more progressive manager. I would’ve liked to have seen us make John McGlynn an offer he’d struggle to refuse, he’s not likely to top the season he just had at Falkirk, and is losing most of his best players, perhaps he’d have seen it as the best time to jump ship, and we would’ve likely been his best option, given Hearts and Aberdeen snubbed him.

Even the most devoted Goodwin lover (and there are a few of them on here) can’t argue with this though; fail to progress from a group comprising of ourselves and 4 part-time teams…. And he should be sacked there and then without question.

I don’t care whether they’re a new team that “needs time to gel” - every team in Scotland has a massive turnover of players every summer anyway - there is no acceptable reason you can muster that will excuse being put out of the cup when you’re in a group containing Arbroath, Montrose, Spartans and Stirling Albion. Not fucking one. That is instant dismissal, no ifs, ands, buts, or maybes.

I’ll never view Dundee United attracting the Falkirk manager as a wildly unrealistic proposition. That you do, feeds into my point that standards and expectations among a growing section of our support are in the gutter. To you and your likes, we’re just another Falkirk, St. Mirren, St. Johnstone, Kilmarnock level club, happy to just make up the numbers. I don’t personally believe that though.

And what about my last point? Do you believe your hero should keep his job if we exit the League Cup at the group stage with the teams we’ve been drawn against?

I didn't say I viewed McGlynn as unattractive. I said he would never come to Dundee United. I know that 100%.

You obviously don't read other people's posts here and remember who made them because last season I was critical of Goodwin and his lack of coaching ability pretty much every week. And no, I do not think we're a Falkirk St Mirren St Johnstone or Kilmarnock so stop guessing my opinions or putting words in my mouth. I think we're currently punching around or about our weight as the 6th largest club in Scotland.

Do I think we could do better? Yes I do, very much so, but the wrong choice could see us taking a disastrous turn very quickly. After spending far too much time in the Championship we have finished 4th and 7th. I don't think he's a good coach but I will defend the club 100% from people like you who want to starve our club of ticket revenue to get your own way. We have grown our support and our sponsorship organically over the last few years, the club is streets ahead of our city rivals and you want to risk all that income and growth to satisfy your hate?

That over the last year you have posted venom at the Chairman in particular at every opportunity tells me that you really do hate the guy. He may have made mistakes but he wrote the cheques that kept the lights on while you posted your nasty bile against him on a weekly basis.

So unless you're prepared to buy into the club and run it I really think you need to stop trying to deny the club revenue and wind your neck in.

I never suggested you did view McGlynn as unattractive, so read what I said again.

You’re right though, I don’t remember who posts what, or particularly care tbh.

I certainly don’t hate Goodwin or Ogren, it’s football, it’s not that fucking deep. In fact, I’ve been in Mark’s company on a couple of occasions through a mate and he couldn’t have been nicer, I don’t just mean asking for a picture at the entrance to Tannadice either. I am concerned however, that he’s completely lost interest in the club and it’s success on the pitch, and is now simply seeking to recoup his losses with no regard for how it affects us on the pitch in the short term. I know for a fact he’s had interested parties at least discuss buying the club, parties that would seek to improve our fortunes on the pitch continuously, not just get to mid table comfort and then stagnate. I also have a ballpark figure of what he wanted, needless to say, said interested parties aren’t interested anymore.

I don’t hate Goodwin either, but I absolute do hate the way he has us playing football. He’s the most cowardly manager in the league tactically. He never sets up to be the protagonist in a game, no matter who we’re playing, whether it’s Celtic or Montrose. It’s just the same cynical shite week in, week out, and I simply don’t get any enjoyment out of watching it anymore. I actually feel he’s getting more cynical and negative as time goes on, rather than braver. His one redeeming feature, was that he had a fairly decent record in the transfer market, relative to our other recent managers, but yet again, I feel like he’s declining in this regard too, and the miss-to-hit ratio is getting worse and worse as time goes on. His cup record speaks for itself; nothing but a complete and utter embarrassment, and failing to get out of this group will be the the nadir of his reign. He done a decent job for us up until fairly recently, but it’s time for a change, that’s very obvious, not to do so is just cowardly from all at the club, and speaks of the complacency that’s set in there.

I’m not trying to encourage anyone not to buy a season ticket, you all have your own autonomy, but you don’t get to complain when the football’s the same negative shite this season as it has been the previous 3 seasons, a tiger doesn’t change his stripes, and I think if everyone that claimed to have had enough of Goodwin at the tail end of last season had actually had enough of him, then jumping to buy season tickets the minute they went on sale probably doesn’t send that message to people at the club.

It was around 7k I believe.

We’re never gonna sell 0 season tickets, but if that 7k became 4k, questions would be asked, and when the answer came back as Jim Goodwin, you can be sure he’d be out like a shot.

As I mentioned before, you can agree with this in principle, but the reality is totally different.  Even if the hypothetical did become reality you're then looking at someone with no football knowledge picking our next manager.

It's a shit state of affairs, but starving the club of cash is only going to result in one thing and personally I quite like having a team to follow, even if they are at best mediocre.
