Listening to Jim Goodwin's pre-match press conference there for the Hearts game.

Usual deflating stuff.

Expects no more transfer business in the way.

But when asked if out going's admits that players could leave, and then further says that players who aren't playing enough could depart i.e. Dolcek and Eskesen.

In what way are we leaving this transfer window stronger? Bar perhaps (hopefully) the Goalkeeping position.

If Ferry leaves (and i think he will) then you are gambling on Farrugia being as good.

Every other position in the team will be the same. In fact we'll have less options if others depart.

This club seriously lack ambition these days. The club stagnating badly under Mark Ogren.

We are stuck with him as there’s no one willing to buy him out. If I had a huge lottery win there’d be no way I’d invest it in United. Would you?

Re: January Transfer Window

A couple of people suggesting we've got the 5th highest budget. We absolutely don't. We are, and always will be (barring a rich investor throwing money about) some distance behind Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen when it comes to budgets.

Every signing we make at our level is a gamble,we dont have the money for sure things. It's just a fact that folk need to get their heads around unfortunately. I dont know if he’s gonna be any good or not tbh but I'm gonna give him the chance to show what he can do, the bar set this season has not been a high one has it? The deal makes perfect sense to me tbh

Every signing is, of course, a gamble. This is football. The deal only makes perfect sense if you've left yourself with a No.2 and a handful of days left in the window. Essentially, Utd have mishandled the situation and put the season in a very precarious place.

The pickings in January are very slim unless you have money to burn, we dont- thats it really.

Agreed.

I'm not going to be upset about St Johnstone signing someone I'd never heard of until about 2 days ago.

Re Tek's comments on Goodwin above, i read he said in an interview that 6th was the most realistic position left to fight for.

Fucking Hell, Dundee won three games in a row and went from relegation candidates to almost safey in the space of two weeks.

His style of play is negative, but ffs, at least try and talk us up a bit, what about "A couple of wins on the bounce and your whole outlook changes, you can really put the pressure on those above you, we're pushing for top 6th, and once you get there, who knows? But won't be conceding anything until it's mathematically
Done!"

16 games to play, 48 points, you only concede a place with a 10 point gap and 3 to play.

The the keeper, i suspect that a decision on him (Kucherenko) was made some time ago, but we had to wait for the window to open and someone to bid, and hope Richards might be good enough.

Another keeper was always coming in, but maybe the hope was it was as a no2, and everything gets bit more complicated when it’s a no1 you need.

It wasn’t at the start of the season but it is grim to watch now. This obsession with a back 3. If it was used for certain games then fair enough but every game.

This is pretty much my take on football.  I was born in Dundee, no choice in that.  I had some choice in becoming a United fan, but the alternative would have meant waiting until I was old enough to go on my own to watch the Dees.  Fortunately I chose the former.

Now it just so happens that aged 55 I saw some of the best football from my team that (bar the Old Firm and Aberdeen) that just about any Scottish football fan will ever see following their team.  As a teenager I just thought that was what football was all about.  Of course there were Hampden horrors but then '94 and '10 brought later glories.

Truth be told however, we've been mediocre pretty much the whole of this millennium and a little bit before.  We've pretty much always had the 5th best budget, but very rarely have we been the 5th best or better in that time.  Is that not the definition of mediocre (or probably in some years a bit more shit than that).

That's why we need to enjoy the small wins.  Trips to Europe.  Beating the old firm.  Competing at our weight.  Yes I want us to win things, but at the start of the season you need to be realistic.

The alternative would have been waiting for the Dees.  I would have seen my team win nothing.  I would have had to celebrate a top six finish like it was winning the cup.  I would have had to live in their shadow for pretty much all of my life.  I'll take mediocre over shit any day.

Enjoy what we've got.  Enjoy top league status and support staying there.

Probably the post I've resonated with most of yours Finn. I'm a wee bit older but whilst I was born in Dundee we moved south when I was about 4/5. My family moved back to Dundee in 79 so until then I had no real knowledge of either Dundee club. Like you I made the right choice and the rest as they say is history. I feel lucky and privileged that I was able to enjoy that golden spell but as we've all mostly agreed successes have been few and mediocrity has been plentiful since then. I still get a buzz every time we win though and feel upset when we lose, the life of the football fan eh?

I feel sorry for my son.  Spent all of his young life in Edinburgh and now off to Uni in Glasgow.  Massive Arab, my fault!

Hahaha might be worse, you could have called him Sue 🤣

If you accept mediocrity, that’s what we will become.

So what's our choices then?

Million pound question

@Kiwiarab

What's Jesse Randall like then? We got ourselves a good 'un?

Re: January Transfer Window

We've got season tickets for auckland FC, Randall is good at the a-league level.

He can play centre forward or as a wide player, possibly more effective out wide. As a centre forward he is good at running in behind the defence, he's not a target man type who can hold the ball up and link with others.

He has pace,  good at being in right place at the right time, and can finish.

Its a massive jump from playing in the a league to scottish football, the weather is different (they dish out sun tan cream at the turnstile over here),  the culture is different, and scottish football is more physical and more intense. I hope it goes well for him.

Re: January Transfer Window

Not a downer on the lad before he even gets here, but a 'massive jump', seems like were spending a fair few quid trying to unearth a gem "Look at us, were great at recruitment!"

Wouldn't it be  easier to shop closer to home, especially if were buying potential rather than a ready to go option, there must be decent costs associated with bringing someone across the world?

Re: January Transfer Window

Being reported by Pete O'Rourke on X that Crystal Palace are in for Charlie Dewar.

Said it before but wtf is the point of the Academy? Our best young players always get sold before we see them play for Utd and it all goes right into Ogren's hipper.

Eskesen reportedly getting sold and Ferry will be too, mark my words (last day of the window job).

Also heard that Dolcek's club have found someone to buy him.

Suppose it depends on how big a win.

If i won North of 20M then absolutely, yes. In fact i'd buy the club tomorrow.

I'd need to actually start doing the lottery first mind.

I've never seen anyone suggesting that

Everyone knows the big five are Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen.

But United are the 6th biggest club in the country (and by a distance too).

We shouldn't be having a smaller budget than Motherwell, Kilmarnock, St.Mirren or Dundee.

I'm not saying we do btw, but the clubs continued caution during transfer windows (particularly January windows) would suggest the budget is less than it should be for a club of our size.

Definitely at an age where I know I'm not living forever so if I won £20 million I'd buy Dundee FC off those Texan chancers. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. I'd keep DC Thomson headlines going for years 😄

And no more matchday parking tickets.

Noah fc Dolcek away

Surely we aren’t away to come out a window unbelievably weaker AGAIN.

Pappoe, Eskenen, Dolcek, ferry away by Monday?

Busy few days at Tannadice you’d think, but going by previous January I have zero confidence

It wouldn't surprise me if Watters departs btw.

Very telling Stirton got on before him tonight.

Currently 4th choice Striker behind a raw kid and the truly woeful Nikolaj Moller.

Name me one player that has got better being coached by Jim Goodwin?

Seriously. Can you name one?

Re: January Transfer Window

Went very quiet on the other pre-contract signing we were supposedly close to making.

I remember Goodwin saying we were close to a couple of pre-contract signings, but obviously only Jesse Randall announced.

Was there not some speculation that the other one was an Eastern European player? Think it was Jerry Dungle who suggested that.
