The disaster that was the January Transfer Window

Illustrated here is just how disastrous our transfer dealings were in January.

1st February.

United sit 3rd
St.Mirren 9th

We should have strengthened the side strongly and went all in for our best finish in 15 years.

Instead it's absolutely killed us.

Frightening. We brought in players for positions we didn't need and didn't sign players for areas we did need.

Ogren's penny pinching hurts us too.

Re: The disaster that was the January Transfer Window

It has been pretty bad, but specifically on St Mirren they've only actually gained 5 points on us since February. When the league is so tight that can happen very quickly and mid table teams can shoot up and down the league at a rate of knots.

There is no getting away from the fact that the January transfer window wasn't a success though. For all the talk of fatigue, there are a host of fresh players signed this season who rarely play or have been put out on loan - you don't need me to name them. Because they aren't good enough, the same players get wheeled out every week.

It's really been a disappointing last few months, bar the three wins in quick succession.

They've gained 7 points on us in the last three games, it's pointless talking about February. It comes down to them having the fucking minerals and us......not so much.

And it’s even more pathetic that we aren’t able to call on any academy players to step up.

Am assuming you mean the players who have come through the 'Academy'. I'm sure players like Thompson, Stirton Adams and perhaps O'Donnell and Dewar are good enough to be involved. I'm not sure now their loans are over they're back to being United players. Even allowing for this the gaffer's got to want them involved regardless.

They can't play for United this season under SPFL rules, but hopefully next season we'll see more of them.

Re: The disaster that was the January Transfer Window

We were screaming for fresh faces in January and when they were announced we were all pretty chuffed remember.
But if we hadn't signed anyone we'd still be screaming yet.
You cannae win.

There is a middle way where we signed better players in the positions that were needed. That's the job of the manager and recruitment team. No signing is guaranteed to be a success but this one went particularly badly. Fiorini, for example, was a very strange signing as that's the one area we are quite well covered.

Re: The disaster that was the January Transfer Window

Just trying to make some sense of it all, possibly adding 2+2 and getting 5 here though.

On paper, Campbell and possibly Fiorini are better players than might be kicking around the top league (who we could afford) and are more first team ready than our youngsters.

So we've taken them on loan with a view to next season, bed them in, give some game time, seen how there are as people, how they integrate within the squad/manager/coaching staff.

None of us have a clue what position Campbell usually plays, because he's trying to fit onto a system that we rarely differ from, unless we're chasing the game, then it all goes a bit Jimmy Calderwood.

But if the plan next season is to play a higher line and with more pace then whatever role we're asking some players to play now will have little bearing on next season?

Or is that too forward thinking for United?
