I don't think thats unreasonable when both the OOC goalkeepers are U21, its likely to be a choice of one or the other.
I agree, but i'm not the one bemoaning letting go of Scottish caps.

I wasn't necessarily saying keep every current or past U-international regardless, I was talking more about current U-internationals, the likes of Constable who's 17. Maybe my comment didn't portray much nuance in the reply but I think it's safe to assume that I wouldn't expect someone who had a cap 1/2/3 years ago to still be kept solely based on that merit.

Fair enough.
I don't think anyone would mind if young lads like Scotty Constable and Charlie Dewar are given new contracts.
It's more some of the older 'younger' players like Newman, Adams, O'Donnell, Fotheringham which we are probably more scrutinising tbh.
A few tough decisions to be made in that regard.

Just because someone has a Scotland cap at U21 or younger doesn't mean they are necessarily good enough for us.
Lewis Fiorini has U21 caps and can't get a sniff for us.
I don't think that is what he is saying. If someone is currently getting age level caps it does mean that they have the potential to be top level players. Fiorini once had that potential and now can't get a game for Dundee United - two different things.
I'm just making a general point. Fiorini is only 22 btw. He's only been out the U21 set-up a year and yet can't get near our team.
I note you yourself didn't mention keeping Jack Newman incidentally.
Is Fiorini another example of the Academy system down south not working either. At 22 you need starts at the top level against real players. If he can't get that at United then he's going to need to drop down further. It is about mentality though. Stephenson for me has taken his chance and doesn't give 'I'm a Liverpool player' vibes.
Fair point on Newman. I suspect it probably is a straight decision between him and Adams - whether we need to make that yet probably depends on whether they can keep getting games on loan.

Miller Thomson I’d be keeping, he’s still young and has shown he has something. I thought he was excellent in the derby on first day of the season, even a few Funsters I know picked him out as the one that caught their eye for us that day. Then he makes a howling arse of that chance up in Dingwall and never really got another run in the team.
Kai I agree isn’t up to it at this level. He’s just not got the quick burst of acceleration needed to play as a winger here, a shame cause he’s not a terrible player at all, and his goal and assist record last season was impressive, but even then, he never fully passed the eye test for me. I’d have liked to have seen what he could do as a striker in a pairing, but we don’t really the luxury of being able to experiment at this stage, so I’d probably think it’s best he moves on. He’s a Falkirk boy I believe, I wonder if that’s maybe his next move.
I agree on Thomson - he needs to bulk up a bit for me and make himself a regular in the Falkirk team until the end of the season. On Kai, Falkirk have better players as we'll see next season. They picked up the boy Barney Stewart from the lower leagues (apparently we were offered him - he seems to be a potential Dalby in the making) and McGlynn is already a big fan and he's in the starting line up way ahead of expectation. Granted Stirton might be a better prospect, but do we miss out on those sorts of players due to looking first to our Academy?

Newman is absolutely garbage if that helps the decision.

He was the man who couldn't get a game in front of Birighitti. Nothing else needs said.

Keep the rest still under contract I've not put a note on.
I'd re-sign Ruaridh Adams to a 2 year deal with an option to extend and see if there's a team in the Championship willing to play him this year to see how he does at a higher level then Kelty. Would be good to see us bring through our own goalie for a change. I remember Euan McLean in around 08 and Marc McCallum in 2015 getting a few games but both not good enough in the end.
The rest of the youth I've harshly judged on whether they get a game at their loan clubs in TEKs loan report. For me, most of our decent youth prospects in the past have managed to play consistently out on loan. May be harsh but I feel a premiership calibre player should be able to get a regular game at league 1 and below consistently even at a younger age.

I'm a bit surprised by that.

Me too. But the press reports I've read, none of them quote a source.
Looking back on the thread quite a few voted to release, including me, but maybe a one year extension even for squad cover might have been the thing.
Everyone was surprised when McMann was released then Ferry was announced, maybe it's the same story here. But as we all know it left us with no cover for Ferry, presumably a financial risk we were prepared to take.

Just saw this news also and thought I'd pop on. Definitely surprising given he's been very good this year. And since you'd not expect Adeboyega to be back it only leaves us with Graham and SCH as contracted centre backs for next season and possibly a new keeper in also if rumours are true of Walton staying down south next season. That's a massive overhaul of the source of our success the last 2 seasons.
One thing I will say is the majority of the fan base were dissapointed with the decision not to re-sign McMann and we got Ferry so lets hope!

I would like to have kept the big fella, does the basics very, very well.

If he's not getting a new deal, the manager will have someone in mid to replace him, bar the January window recruitment has been more hit than miss.
Interesting times ahead.

Surprised and a little disappointed....but as somebody said previously, it could be a scott mcmann situation.
Jim not afraid to make a tough decision.
Also as much as I like Gallagher, hes not been without fault - especially at the start of the season.
If it's true, absolutely wish him the very best. Hes done a job for us but was never a long term solution. I hope that with European football looking pretty likely, it gives us both the resource and the extra draw to get good, longer term replacements in

He lives locally, hopefully for him, Dundee will give him a crack at The Championship.

Thank you for an outstanding season Declan - hopefully still involved in coaching the kids and gets a good move for his family.

Really surprised at that. Been one of our best players this season and more than earned another year. We’re taking a big risk getting rid of someone with his experience and leadership qualities, especially with some of the young centre halves we have coming through. It makes me nervous when you consider how hard we’ve found it to find solid, reliable centre halves over the years. Hope we don’t live to regret it.
All the best to him wherever he goes. Like Kevin Holt, he’s been a tremendous signing for us and a massive part in getting us back into the position we’re in now.
If I was The Fun I’d be all over him given their defensive record.

Nobody can judge whether this is a wise move until we see the performances of his replacement.

Hope we go for Jerome Prior, who's OOC at Livi. From what I've heard and seen, he's been an excellent keeper for them. Although I'd preferably keep Walton.

Gallagher has done a great job for United.
I'm just a little surprised at the timing of all this.
It would be entirely natural for him to go into the last five games now not wanting to get injured and wreck a move elsewhere.
Not ideal.

It's only right that United give players a bit of notice if they are being offered a new contact or not, timing seems fair.
It wasn't United who leaked the news. It was probably Declan's agent publicly alerting clubs of his availability.
