European Qualification Permutations?

What does 3rd, 4th,and Cup Winners (or 5th if Celtic win it) get you?

What tournament and what stage do you enter?

Does anyone know for sure?

Also what position gets you Conference football, if you get knocked out of the Europa League. Just 3rd place?

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

If Celtic win the cup, then 4th place enters the Europa League 2nd? qualifying round and 5th place enters the Conference League 2nd? qualifying round.

Either way the ties are to be played on the 24th and 31st of July, so get your holidays in now!

Does 4th do the same so long as you get through one qualifying round? Hibs look like they are going to be strong favourites for 3rd tbh

Hibs are definitely favourites but I wouldn’t count us out. We have a hardy group that can see out games and only need one chance to nick games. And we’ll have our confidence back in doing just that after three 1-0 wins on the spin.

Aberdeen are definitely the weakest mentally out of the three.

No we would have to win two. 4th gets you Europa League qualifying round at

Oh totally, I'm not counting us out at all. We'll need to beat Hibs, sheep and saints though just to give us any kind of chance. 4th place is more likely and 5th place is too far away for St Mirren to catch us so we have nothing to lose in going for it with everything we have. Bring it on!

So,

3rd - Europa Group Stage + Conference if you are eliminated?
4th - Two Europa Qualifiers + Conference qualifier if you fail to reach Europa Group Stage?
5th - Conference League Qualifier (One or Two to reach Group Stage)?

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

Hibs are flying at the minute, we need to stop them, I hope we get them next.

For third I think we will need 10 points, 4th I think it might be just 6 points and don't get pumped in the three other games to keep the goal difference down.

That sounds about right. Whatever happens, we’ve put ourselves in a great position going into the split and it’s gonna be an exciting end to the season with everything to play for, just a bastard we lost they late goals up in Aberdeen. Scarcely would’ve believed we’d be in this position just two years later when we watched that pile of shite get relegated against Kilmarnock. Driving home from that game I remember thinking it was gonna be a long time before we seen a competitive United team again.

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

It's likely we'll finish 5th based purely on squad size and quality.
At Pittodrie we go 2-0 up and our subs didn't improve us, theirs did and it got them a point.
Important also to remember that if Dalby's goal against Hibs wasn't incorrectly ruled out it's most likely that we'd be sitting above them in 3rd tonight.

So the squad should take confidence at what they've achieved.  We'll need as many of the squad available as possible for these remaining games, losing Luca reduces our midfield options but if Ross Graham and Vicko return that's going to be a massive boost.
Can the captain stay fit, hmm, I'm thinking he will and hopefully he does because we need his quality. We need to just focus on each game and give it everything and see where it takes us.

Ps Interesting what was said above about Aberdeen's fragile mentality, definitely one problem this group of players doesn't suffer from.

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

We are due a result against the Old Firm.  Fancy our chances against St Mirren and Aberdeen.  Hibs bubble has to burst.  Rangers are lucky that point yesterday means we can't catch them

Nothing to lose.  Battle like we have and we've got a very good chance of 4th and a decent chance of 3rd.

4th gets you second round Europa League qualifier drop down to Conference league qualifiers
5th gets you second round conference league qualifiers

So guaranteed more than two European games if we finish 4th or higher as long as Celtic win the cup.

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

5th is almost guaranteed for United and almost guaranteed Europe (it will be a Celtic v Aberdeen final which Celtic will win).

It’s time to attack teams.

Celtic have lost three games domestically in recent times (Hibs, Rangers, St.Johnstone).

Definitely not a given they will win the Cup.

United need to take care of our own business.

We'll know better by Sunday tea time,if it's a Celtic v Sheep final then I'd say Europe is fairly safe before we kick another ball,no way st mirren overtake both us and the sheep.

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

The right result today with the Sheep edging out Hearts.
The only surprise was how long it took them after getting a man advantage

They needed a 2 man advantage tbf

But yeah, one foot in Europe now as far as I'm concerned. Although I really don't want to settle for 5th,want everyone giving 110% to try to get 3rd.

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

Celtic win today and 5th is 100% guaranteed Europe. We are almost 100% guaranteed Europe.

With us basically in Europe, get the shackles off and really go for 3rd.

The shackles were taken off and we got pumped by a poor Dundee team.  Shackles were then put back on and we managed to get 3 good results to get us top 6.

Free flowing, attacking football doesn't always mean glorious victory.

There's a balance to be struck, we play our usual game, the best we might get is 5th, we're already going to be in a position come Saturday, where we could be 4 or 6 behind Hibs, or 1 or 3 behind Aberdeen.

Celtic won't down tools immediately, they'll want to beat The Huns, but beyond that we can't rely on them to equal things out.

We're going to actively have take the game to Aberdeen and Hibs, which we did in recent games at Tannadice, but we were more pragmatic away.

The difference between 5th and 3rd could be absolutely massive for the future of the club, this is the make money have a bit of fun route the Ogren's wanted.

Would be a right pisser to get one tie in some backwater where it could be potentially 4 great trips.

Re: European Qualification Permutations?

Also, every team will be able to call on subjective VAR decisions going against them, but an injury time penalty not being awarded in the 2-2 game v Dundee and the Dalby goal being chopped off v Hibs, which we later got apologies for, could prove to be be huge.
