First away game by train with my freshly turned 18 year old boy. Where do Arabs go for a beer before the game these days?
I'd like to see:
Walton
Strain Gallagher Graham Ferrry
Stephenson Sevelj
Middleton Fiorini/Babunski Trapa
Dalby
The Dons are on a bit of a precipice at the moment. As are we. We need to ensure that they fall off and we keep going upwards. Don't see Hibs beating the Jambos so back to third with a win. Also every chance that a win could pretty much secure top six - don't see anyone below 6th getting much more than 43 points and we are sure to beat the Dees - they're mince.

I'd maybe swap Stephenson for Campbell but would be happy to see this lineup.

That January transfer window tripe is a pain in the arse.
If anything we've been weakened by our arrivals.
As far as I can see anyway.
Fun are saying the same thing about their window.
Pressure is on the managers to do the right thing for the demanding fans.

By the way I think we have better players in our own ranks than loanees Stephenson & Adeboyega.
Altho Kevin Holt departing wasn't good, I had him as one of our best players.
Throw in Cleall-Harding? Doubt it sadly, too risky.

A post Shakey made the other day resonated with me. I'd like us to pick a XI with our best players available, and mould a formation round that to try and score goals and win.
I would like to see this on Sunday -
..........................Walton...............
......Strain....Gallagher...Graham...Ferry
Middleton..Sevelj..Sibbald..Trapanovski
...................Dalby...JVDS....
Subs - Richards, Harding, Adegboyega, Paton
Fotheringham, Babunski, Fiorini, Campbell, Stephenson

For me I think the team will be.
Walton
Strain, Gallagher, Graham, Sevelj.
Middleton, Campbell, Babunski, Fotheringham
JvDs
Dalby.
Our squad is stretched to the absolute limit at present, Moult, Docherty, Ferry and Stephenson will all miss out and it's far too soon for Sibbald to start.
This game will come too soon for us I'm afraid.
The decision not to add back up for Ferry instead of adding Fiorini and Paton was bonkers imo. It's a very difficult market to add a striker of any real quality in the January window and it proving the case again this season.
To compound the above further our worst fears were realised with Ferry pulling up, Holt should never in a month of Sundays been allowed to leave but that's for another thread/day.

What's up with Ferry?

Yip.
Crazy to expect him to play every week and not get injured.
We should be scouring the market for an out of contract player who can play left back.

I agree but you would need to be really shite if you still haven't been picked up a month after the window has closed.
Stephenson I think is the back up and he limped off on Wednesday.
Last season from memory we asked young Miller Thomson to play at left back, adding to the madness, we also sent him out on loan.

Limped off holding his hammy on Wednesday.

Cheers Tek,
Agree with lineup other than for me Sibbald needs kid gloves for another week.
So Babunski to get another chance for me.
Another thing Jim said in post match after VAR farce was Stephenson pulled up immediately afterwards fae standing round in the cauld - no surprise there - and the fact that it's going to happen time and again. So we shall see on Stevenson's fitness.
(Fucx VAR, still seething ..... )

I've been full of praise for Goodwin and went into battle to defend him a couple of times. Looking at the big picture he's done a fantastic job.
But....and here's the but...his continuing reliance on narrow lineups and over defensive approach is wearing thin with me, in fact I would say it's wearing me down.
Campbell is not the player that Luton fans enjoyed, Fiorini is... what...we haven't really seen him, and Paton is way out of his depth yet the manager is persistently playing him in the vain hope that some miracle may occur.
I should be excited about us attaining a top 6 finish in our first season back shouldn't I? No, I shouldn't because third was there for us if we had just shown the ambitious tactics to go and nail it. But we didn't. And haven't.
Instead we might be in a scrap to finish in 6th. I expect us to lose at Aberdeen tomorrow, adding more pressure.
I'm not asking for 343 but at least give us a winger eh? Give us some width, give us some link up play that we can applaud instead of punt and hope.
As you can maybe tell I'm irritated with the position we're in because with more ambition in team selections we could be solidified in 3rd. Now we're hoping for 6th.
Certainly VAR has cost us minimum 1, more likely 3 points on Wednesday. I'm angry about that because I don't believe it was an honest mistake, I believe the guy has looked and looked and looked again and tried and eventually invented a way to rule the goal off. Bad luck, poor form, individual mistakes I can take, but anti United corruption I will never stomach.
So I would select Middleton to partner Dalby in a 442, and hope that we can get at least a point or maybe surprise everyone with 3.
Sorry if this post seems overly negative but I am definitely scunnered with the style of football, the quality of signings that he's persisting in playing, and the cheats in Glasgow who didn't like our comments about the KMI panel.

The tactics haven't changed from the start of the season. Things just no going our way in a tight league like they were early in the season.
You only have to look at the two Hibs matches at Tannadice. IMO the better team lost both games.
Could JG have used wingers on Wednesday, possibly but again IMO both Middleton & Trapanovski have had a number of games where they have contributed virtually nothing.
Looking at the bigger picture Hibs, Hearts & Aberdeen all have better squads than Utd.
No supporter ever agrees with all the managers decision but I would see us managing to get top 6, as the promoted team as a reason to praise JG not as a reason to have a go for not finishing higher.
Online!
We did get plenty width against Hibs though. Did the full backs not put in 15 crosses or something like that? Points to the strikers and midfield not taking up the right positions in the box, and I would blame, as others have said, Paton and Campbell for that. Because of how crap Grieve was I wasn’t convinced on a pacey striker, but listening to Celtic game last night, the St Mirren strikers tore Celtic apart and think we should be trying get Olusanya or the boy at St Johnstone - boys who are proven in the league.
Agree with above on luck. We were having lots. Now we are getting none. A couple of horrific Refereeing decisions coupled with games we have hit the woodwork multiple times. 3rd is still there and very much achievable.
We should start with a similar line up at Pittodrie as we started V hibs. Keep it tight and then open up later if we have to. would like to see Babunski play, but think Jim is trying to play Campbell into form. Ade seems to be a bit out of form but we don’t really have options there now.

I’ve been really impressed with the boy Maswanhise at Motherwell every time I’ve seen him. Absolutely rapid and he tore us a new arsehole in the first game at Tannadice, might’ve even got both goals against us, I can’t remember fully. Definitely mind him getting the second anyway. Only on loan from Leicester so might be gettable depending on how they view him given they’re headed straight back to the Championship.

Half time 2-0 United. A completely different United.
What a difference, that's what I was on about with my post above.
Excellent midfield, Sibbald really making an impact in possession, patient forward play, pace on both sides, blistering counter attack play. Much better!

I understand our backline and its solidity has done us so many favours, but how can we ever get 3 points if we allow a team to have their way with us for 15/20 mins and the end of a game while we cross our fingers?

A tale of 2 halves. Very negative second half from Goodwin.
Their quality off the bench got them the draw but we didn't exactly help ourselves.
Offline
Very poor strategy from Goodwin second half. Begging to escape with the draw.
Offline
The 2nd half is a prime example of why i have never really taken to Jim Goodwin.
When it's 'make or break' and everything's on the line, he'll always, ALWAYS show caution and go defensive.
A loser mentality.
Offline
Before the game the vast majority of the UTD fans would definitely have taken a draw.
There's two ways to look at it now praise, for JG based on the 1st half or criticise him for the 2nd.
For me probably somewhere in the middle.

That’s on Goodwin today. What struck me throughout the whole game, not just the second half was how deep he had Middleton and Trapanovski playing. Aberdeen showed in the second half how vulnerable they were at set pieces. We should’ve had them high and wide playing for corners off their full backs. Instead they never even crossed the halfway line in the second half. Totally self-inflicted and a carbon copy of how we played against them in the first game at Pittodrie, allowing them to get low crosses into the box all throughout the second half, eventually some of these balls are always gonna fall to their attackers as they did in both games.
