Why has miller Thomson been completely frozen out??
Babunski and trapa are absolutely miles off it- useless for a few weeks now, can go on about playing babunski out of position but you cannot excuse the ammount of times he gave the ball away tonight, and trapa Middleton looked much more dangerous when he came on- says it all.
You're seriously questioning the substitutions?
Moult and Dalby linked up to create a goal and the best save their keeper made all night. Middleton got past his man more times in his few minutes on the park than Trapanovski has all season. The only one I'd question would be Adeboyega going off when it should have been Stephenson all day long, which is the main reason we are out the cup and the weekend is fucking ruined.

I think we keep shooting our self in the foot with this formation.
We only look like we’re at it when we change it.
Stephenson over Thomson is wild, especially if we’re sticking with the 3-4-3.
VDS is the worst of the 3 big strikers we have IMO.

More the fact- he played till 81st minute with a centre half playing right back and a right back playing right wing- utterly bizarre. Considering you’d seen the difference Middleton had mad on the left. Far too negative. He was praying for a goal so he could go back to the back three.

Absolutely fucking sick at that.

I rest my case regarding Louis Moult btw. Needs to be starting from now on,showed more than VDS has all season tbh. Not everything is about pace.

Me too mate, horrendous lunge for the penalty, really don't understand how a professional player thinks there's ever gonna be any other outcome from that.

It's hard to describe just how bad and negative the first 70 mins were, absolutely horrific.
They weren't any better and that is what made it even harder to take.
Em Macedonians were miles and miles off it, mental that they reappeared for the second half. They fact we went the first 10 or 15 mins without even an attempt in the second half was hard to stomach. What on earth did they talk about at half time.
We got a bit of success when we went direct and to round it off Moult scores a wonder goal and it's all for nothing.
School boy stuff from the lad from Liverpool (another he was miles off it).
Middleton looked much better when he came on.
In short, we got exactly what we deserved.
Not good enough.

Silly tackle but if professional players never made rash tackles you're never seeing pens like that but you see them quite often even in the EPL

I remember (naively) saying after the Dundee Derby that i had a feeling that we might be a fun team to watch this season. Man was that optimistic.
That was utterly joyless and insipid once again in the main. The starting formation is crap, utter crap. Or at least the players he is stubbornly shoehorning into it are making it crap.
VDS is almost playing like a defender upfront. All he seems to do is press and try make tackles from centre mid. The two Macedonians haven't been at the races for about a month now.
Babunkski playing with his back to goal far too often and has to speed up his play also. He didn't seem slow in anyway in the Derby, so why he has reverted to this i have no idea.
We just aren't creating chances with this formation and personnel and tonight once we went 442 and went with Moult~Dalby up top and played two wingers in Middleton and Ubochioma we finally started to look threatening. Why not just start like that?
He is just a very negative Manager for me, and that is the reason i can't take to him, it's that simple. He had a very good group of players at Aberdeen and messed things up because he started trying to be too clever and also couldn't seem to motivate them for certain crunch games. I still see these similar weaknesses in his management.
Any ideas of offering him a new contract anytime soon (for me) are wild.
To end on the few positives of a depressing night -
Walton excellent.
Adegboyega again very good. Our best defender and also one of the few players who carried the ball forward well.
Moults goal excellent. And nice link up by Dalby for the goal. A tiny green shoot of hope that they could form a partnership together.
Docherty again pretty good in centre mid.
Middleton looked sharp in his first appearance in what feels like ages. Thought he looked angry/fired up and had a point to prove.

Have to disagree with this SM.
One thing that done my head in (not just tonight) is us passing the ball to death
Side pass > back pass > forward > side pass > back pass > repeat
The only time we actually looked in anyway threatening is when we started hitting the ball solely forward and hitting it a bit longer. Our goal comes from a big long punt from Ross Graham into the box and Dalby's clever knock down gives us our only goal.
Three touches as opposed to fifty meaningless one's.

Modern futba for ye. I've stopped watching as much as I used to (football in general). Whilst there are some genuine good games a lot of the games are this--passing it around the back endlessly. I read somewhere about the new England coach and how when he was U21 coach the centre half at one point stood for 30 seconds with the ball waiting to play the right pass. That is horrific.

Agree wi this post and the one you put up before it TEK. Got to the point that the 3 boys behind me started cheering/jeering in the 2nd half every time the ball was squared to Gallagher to be squared to someone else.
I've said before I don't have any issue with 3 at the back but this 3-4-3 isn't working, up until Moult and Dalby coming on it was exactly the same as Sunday, we could've played all night and not scored.
Thought the boy Meshack looked alright when he came on but where the fuck is Miller Thomson?? One of the brightest prospects at the club, who started the season well and he didn't even warm up during the 2nd half so going to assume it's an injury. Fair play to Middleton who did well when he came on also.
It HAS to be two up top next week.

I can't believe this comment.
'When you get the game tied, you have to settle the game down and if that means taking the game to extra time so be it.'.
That sums him up. Would rather be cautious than go with the momentum we have and go on and win the game. Such a defeatist attitude. No wonder his record in the cups is so bad.

I hear you but I would guess 7/10 coaches consolidate possession with a late equaliser and take the extra time. Could argue though it's on him that he wasn't able to get that message over to the players. At 1-1 we chased a win in the 90, kept flooding forward and lost possession and our defence eventually cracked.
Quick question for everyone, how many matches had Goodwin managed in the Prem before taking over at United? I get the sense that he's still learning on the job.
Biggest fault was starting that same lineup which Kettlewell sussed he would and his formation completely smothered it. I knew he would start that way, there was a great opportunity in a one off game to start Moult and Dalby in an effort to get ahead in the game then use Trapanovski's pace later when they were tiring and Sande to help keep the ball more when protecting that lead.
The boy Stephenson has done well for us, one daft mistake doesn't change that but you can see the pressure building now from local fans wanting our young boys to play when they're no better.
Miller Thomson for example is a hopeless defender, we've seen his mistakes but he's OK going forward so he's not a like for like option for Stephenson. Kai isn't Prem quality in my opinion. At least not from what I've seen.
Once Strain returns it might be a straight choice between MT and Stephenson advanced on the right hand side.
A real missed opportunity but at least you're being honest about your dislike for Goodwin and I have to say you never suggested the team before the match you suggested your team after we lost it.

Hopeless was a wrong choice of word and I take it back because when faced up one to one with an attacker out on the right he's good. But the two goals we conceded were when he got wrong side in a fast paced phase of play and the attacker got inside him to score.
Definitely happened twice in 2 different games but tbh I haven't got the time to watch the highlights back of every game to prove my point.
If you recall last season Goodwin said MT was going to be a great RB but he brought Strain and Stephenson in ahead of him in that position so maybe Goodwin saw what I saw. But opinions differ, I think he's a cracking player but in an offensive position with a FB behind him.
I agree with most fans that persisting with the Sande line up needed changing and he should have done it for last night's match, definitely a mistake. Overall I just think some fans are expecting a lot better but it's still September and this is a very new team. If it keeps happening I won't be happy either.
FWIW I think Goodwin will be thinking today that he started the wrong lineup.
BTW I think your Stephenson Docherty Babunski midfield would be worth a look.
Imo we're not going to see the best of Babunski until he's free to play as the 10 behind 2 strikers.

Walton
Sevelj Adeboyega/ Gallagher Graham Ferry
Stephenson Docherty
Babunski
Thompson Moult Trapanovski
Obviously I'd prefer Walton a little more central 🤣🤣

We absolutely MUST start training the following
Walton
Thomson Adeboyega Graham Ferry
Docherty Selvej
Trapanovski Babunski Stephenson
Moult
4-2-3-1
Ferry and Stephenson can swap (depending)
Trapanovski on the right cutting in and getting more shots at goal
2 sitting with Docherty and Selvej that protects the defence and the 4 infront to attack
babunski a free reign to find the wingers and moult
this current system is rank and if goodwin thinks every player has clicked to it - he is sadly mistaken

Quite surprised at some of the reaction here. I’m assuming the game plan was to keep it tight and then try to win it late on. Losing the goal just before half time through falling asleep at the throw in chucked all the hard work. I thought he’d wait til 55 to make a change and that’s what he did. We get the goal after going all out with the attacking subbies and then fail to be able to control the game enough to build on that. Poor challenge for the pen but could have been different if he’d given a pen to o Meshack. Assume it was a dive though.
As people know I’m not a massive Goodwin fan, but I wasn’t too critical of him after the game. His plan got turned on its head when we shipped the first and he did recover it but he’d gone gung ho by then, the game had totally opened up and we lost the toss of the coin. It could easily have gone the other way and we’d be lauding him.
The Macedonians were poor in the night. Docherty and Sibbald were fine but they don’t look to get the ball forward enough so without the Macedonians doing the play making we’re toothless. vDS got absolutely no service so not sure how he is supposed to score but he certainly doesn’t look like he will up on his own.
I was pleased for Moult and thought Dalby and him looked like they might have something going. That said, I don’t see Goodwin starting them much in the league as I think they benefited from us gambling and going for it. He’s not going to do that in the league away from home. That said he needs to figure out a formation that gets two up top and keeps us tight at the back
Disappointed but not disheartened.

Looking like a Steve Clarke side, right down to stupid penalty given away at the death.
Wouldn't be altogther despondent despite that , sometimes you'll take the field and you'll get just a lacklustre (or should I say shite) affair despite all best intentions. First half, this was it two well matched teams going nowhere (until 46mins 20 secs). That said if we don't have total reversal in our setup straight from Stevie Clarke manual we're going to have turgid season and end up 7th, 8th.
I'm no getting how after 45 minutes of breathtaking stuff against Fun we've arrived at this.
Next week 2 up front. Must.
I'd be playing Moult JVS - harsh to drop JVS as he's been asked to play a link man role, with nobody to link to.
And Thompson. (Meshack coming on was bewildering).

That's true Shakey, but I thought we were strangely subdued. I'm not a singer per se, but I normally get drawn into it at away games given the atmosphere - didn't happen. Maybe due to it being midweek? Noticed that Well fans have commented on the Arab turnout, which was fairly impressive for a 'provincial' club.
