Might be decent enough at recruitment but as an actualy coach and tactical manager never going to be good enough IMO
Out of interest, who would be good enough that would be within our budget?
And also who has impressed you with their tactical nous?
Something I learned from appointing Courts - a man with absolutely no experience or credentials to think he should have been appointed at an SPL club - was that every managerial appointment is a complete role of the dice and that who the fans might think they want is rarely the best person for the job.
Also, if the various forums are anything to go by and are representative of the clubs support, there is rarely agreement on the best candidate. I remember reading about how Shite Mcinnes is a few years ago, while on Mad, there is a long thread about us appointing the Airdrie manager with many posters feeling we should sack Goodwin and gamble on a guy who’s whole principle is what I hated about Goodwin most of last year - boring, ineffective possession football where our 2 defenders keep the ball all game and nothing happens.
This is completely incorrect. Complete nonsense in fact. Yes there is a thread on Mad about Rhys McCabe but it was started by someone who's credentials have been questioned in the past and it's full of replies that don't support the OP at all and don't support a change of coach.
So you need to get your facts right because you will get corrected.

🤣 hahaha. Brilliant correcting from the Mad police. Careful all, even if you have never had anything to do with United mad, you may well have your credentials on an anonymous football forum questioned or get a lifetime ban for disagreeing with the mods. You made my Saturday night pal.

Nothing to do with Forum police. Go and read the thread. None of the regular posters agreed with the Thread starter. Not one. You made out that the Mad posters are wanting Goodwin out when the reality is most of the Goodwin out folk are on this forum.
Great 3 points today, Goodwin made the right changes in play and it resulted in a really important win.
At our level with our budget who are we going to attract that's better?
The recruitment for last season was done very quickly on a small budget and it wasn't pretty but it got the job done.
The recruitment this season looks excellent, still gelling with a lot of new players and more good football to come.
Imo It's time the fans got behind Goodwin, give him some credit for what he's doing instead of quietly waiting for the next runof 2 defeats to give it more Goodwin out shite.

Just to add there are Dundee fc supporters who post regularly on Mad. As long as they don't troll they're allowed there up to a point. Any spamming posters or childish Dee fans on the wind up do get banned but I've never seen a ban handed out for a genuine poster disagreeing with a MOD. So you're wrong on that one as well 😁

Canadian Arab has been rather naughty restarting this thread.
There is not a lot for us all to be arguing about at the moment (for once).

The dury is still out for me, so far this season we have won 1 game against a premiership team ( in the cup ) so I’ll wait and see where we are in December but I do think we are going in the right direction.
Agree that every fan is entitled to their opinion so fair enough but we drew with a Top 6 side in a Derby we should have held a 3-1 lead in, we drew at Dingwall when we really should have seen the game out, beat a Top 6 side in the LC and beat a Premiership side at home today.
So with what is a brand new team getting to know each other we're unbeaten in 4 outings against Prem teams and won two of those 4 games. It's decent isn't it? I think we're definitely heading the right way but agree December is always a time to see the bigger picture after more games.

I don't think Goodwin is a great manager, but he was always going to have one hand tied behind his back with Asghar in the building. Interesting to see CAs comments on outthinking Levein. Unarguably, he did but only after getting the starting team set-up wrong and but for some poor finishing from Saints would have been at least one down before he changed things up. Also anyone at the game could see that it wasn't working and needed changed at half-time, Yet the same team came out second half and there was no significant structural change. The difference in the game was they missed a sitter and we took our half chance off a poor shot block from their keeper. After that they lost their discipline, but we did at least partially cause that by changing it up.
I can now at least see what he is trying to do, but with 4 centre halfs on the field it's just not going to be pretty and bizarrely he is now reminding me of Levein when he was with us who had a solid team which only reached its full potential when Houston stepped in and took the shackles off.
He still annoys me in his subbies being too late and I also think he is too negative at home. All that said however, I can see he has a plan. I can now see he managed Watt last year and got shot as soon as he could. He has realised Grimshaw isn't a great footballer and he has found some really quite decent replacements and grown the squad depth remarkably.
I was always convinced that getting shot of Asghar was infinitely more important than Goodwin. For me Goodwin has shown enough in recruitment to buy him some time. If he keeps us out of real relegation trouble then he'll deserve next season too to see if he can build on what he has started.
The fans have backed the team and I think that bodes well for Goodwin. A manager with some flaws, but, at this point in time, definitely better the devil you know and he could realistically build something that might be sustainable at this level and have us where we should be (top six, Europe more years than not and the odd cup final).

Agree with a lot of that finn but maybe you are a touch too hard on him at points. With regards to Saturdays game, you need to give things time to work/not work. If you were massively reactive, the team would be flip flopping all over the place and it'd lead to confusion.
I've no problem with him changing things up at half time and seeing if they work or not then making further changes if they don't or could be improved

Maybe you're right. I guess I'm talking about 15 minutes, but I thought the time for change was half-time and it does continue a theme of leaving changes a bit too late. It's as if the gameplan is set in stone before the game. He doesn't really react to changes in the game or opposition changes. It's the lack of flexibility that hampers us at times. Granted, last season his bench options were limited, but that isn't the case this season. The catalyst for our win came from Trapa getting by his man the one and only time (which you could argue supports delaying the change up) not anything Goodwin did in the match.
One of my gripes last season was two players going over for corners (which is the plan this season too). I don't have a problem with that per se as it brings a defender out of the box. However, last season we didn't actually have a short corner routine so teams figured out that they didn't need to match up and we still just swung one into the box, but with us being a player down in there.
It's just stuff like that which I'd like to see the manager absolutely crucifying from the sidelines, but Jim doesn't. Which must mean that's his instructions.
As I said though, his recruitment and start to the season buys him some time. Getting over the defeat to Falkirk and scraping through in the cup looks like it may have just saved his skin longer term. I'd like to see him do well. I don't mind him as a bloke and would have no issue in him staying long term if he gets the required results, but I'd just like him to be more Houston than Levein.

Aye, totally get it and agree in the dundee game, for instance, the tides were turning way before the equaliser came. They'd been shelling it up from the back for a good while before the goal came.
Difficult balance I guess between being overly reactive which doesn't help, to not being reactive enough

Good point.
I sit amid 100 qualified coaches in the george fox, me and all of them would have subbed Stevenson at half time.
Thankfully Goodwin is in charge and none of us.

Very true, but they do have initials on their jackets and their own tactics boards.

Bar the one dodgy back pass, I thought he did absolutely fine throughout the game given that he was playing in a set up that wasn't working. Space opened up for him second half when we had a player in CDM able to pass the ball...must be a better view from the GF upper...

I've not got the cash to be mingling in the upper Finn.
All about opinions but I thought in the first half he was very average and only improved slightly in the second albeit he scored and that is all that matters. He just a boy though so he's only going to improve.
I agree though that in the second half we were much improved.

I think he is an impressive addition for what is effectively Strain back up. Yip he's just a laddie, but he's got a bit of swagger and I think he'll continue to improve. I like him.

Agree that maybe it wasn't very helpful to resurrect a dramatic thread like this when a lot of the posts were made when emotions were running high. But it was resurrected. The night of the shocking display at East End I was angry but I never called for the manager to go. What happened was we did beat Raith at Tannadice and we eventually got there.
What bugs me a bit is the positive recruitment made and the recent success with the league sitting 3 after 4 matches and the LC into the QF at the expense of StMrn has some fans here using phrases like (it's bought him some time) and (so far) just very very negative stuff.
Goodwin deserves more credit than hes getting from the naysayers on here. Because if you don't give that credit now what is it you're actually waiting for? Something else?

It's not negative, it's realistic.
I've watched football long enough to know it can change very quickly.
Again, can't we just enjoy the here and now?
