Re: Dundee Utd vs St.Mirren - 2nd Round League Cup (2PM)

Good win and a welcome clean sheet, Ferry is fast becoming a player of the year contender.
Tough game away to Motherwell but winnable.

Re: Dundee Utd vs St.Mirren - 2nd Round League Cup (2PM)

Great result and now more importantly an excellent opportunity to get to Hampden for our first semi in a wee while.

Thought today we looked a bit more secure but we still need to tighten up and retain possession a lot better.

Walton looked a lot more like himself today but needs to take a bit off his kicking.

Back three and Holt all played well.

Will Ferry though gets top marks again,  get the feeling we will only see this boy for one season if he keeps this form up.

That's us played two of last seasons top six and bar the last 15 - 20 ish minutes of both games, neither has really caused us significant problems and we should've had both games tied up before they took a grip

Interesting few weeks ahead of us, still feel we're at least a striker and a midfielder who can break up and control the play, away from being a decent team.

Agree with what’s said above but said to my son at around 75 mins why is Jim not sending on the subs to try and win the game as I thought they were tiring and we ended up just holding on and seeing the game out.

Don’t think we’ll sign another midfielder. Docherty is back, got to hope he can stay fit. Sevelj looks like that’s his best position, and Odada… well I think Jim will want to at least give him a chance to get fully match fit and integrated into the team.

Think we will sign another striker though.

This is something that really frustrates me about Goodwin.

Once we are one up the more the game goes on he will just sit on a lead. It worked today, but it doesn't always (as the previous two league games showed us).

Anyway, that was a welcome win and clean sheet today and it was a decent draw we got too (glad we avoided Celtic).

We badly need a Striker with pace who can play off the shoulder of Defenders and we can hit the ball long to.

Jury's out on VDS for me. Hard worker and good link-up but i can't see him scoring much.

I know it's early and the boy has only been here less than a month, but get the feeling he's a dud and we ain't gonna see much of him.

Started the Luton match and then played a part of the Derby, County match and then started the B Team Derby.

Never played one minute yesterday and Holt unbelievably slotted into central midfield.

I don't think it looks good for him. Particularly now that Docherty is back and we also have others who can play CDM (Sevelj, Stephenson).

He'd surely be fit enough for even a cameo by now if he was trusted (signed 26th July).

I thought it was telling that JG put Middleton on before Fotheringham.  Not that I disagreed with that. I would like to see both them out the door, we can do better and require better if we have any ambitions of challenging for top 6.

Totally agree.  He also doesn't react to the other team making changes.  He should know the opposition inside out and must know if they put on 3 subbies then they are trying to change the set up. We went from a team coasting the game to a team holding on a bit.

It's been a factor of Goodwin's tenure that we don't go out to kill teams when we are on top.  That might have been ok in the Chumpionship, but we've already seen 4 points drift away in the league and that could have quite easily been 5. You just know that if the Buddies has nicked one yesterday then they'd have gone on to win.

We need to change the approach.  We'd have had 3 points if we'd won one lost one so being a bit braver does actually pay off even if it doesn't always work.  Drawing games doesn't build the point total in the same way as winning 50%.  It's not rocket science.

That’s my gut feeling too. Hope we’re wrong.

A lot of players getting written off here. Fotheringham did very well last season in his breakthrough season, yet people wanting him out the door. Odada had no preseason and is maybe just taking longer to settle than some but fuck me the boys not even played a full game but he's being written off. It's a squad we are building here and not everyone will get on the pitch every game.

Not often I totally agree with you ADS but spot on here.  We seem to have, somewhat to my surprise, brought in a bit of depth.  With Odada, we have the depth of squad to give him a bit of time to acclimatise.  In year's gone by he'd have been straight in the XI and it would have been sink or swim.  I think we've brought him in knowing that he's not necessarily perfectly suited to Scottish football, but he's a unit and has played for his country as recentluy as June/July so you would think has a game in there.  Time to show it is exactly what he needs.  People are also assuming that Fotheringham and Middleton are off.  I am not sure they will be.

Yeah i agree. Round about 65-70 i was wanting Miller Thomson on for Luca. Thought he settled in well but we were sitting in too deep and we needed to push them back.

Re: Dundee Utd vs St.Mirren - 2nd Round League Cup (2PM)

Seen a lot if folk saying yesterday wasn't a good performance, wasn't pretty.

Seems a bit nit-picky, thought we handled St Mirren well, should've scored a couple more, restricted them to lumping it into our box.

Bar a wee scare at the end and the boy from the lodge adding on loads of time I wasn't worried.

I'd file it under professional performance, got the job done, relatively comfortably.
