Dry away days

Seen this? Govt looking to stop folk travelling by bus to games to not be able to let you have a drink on the way to the games?

Aside from the fact that a drink is all that gets you through our games sometimes, surely this encourages binge drinking or will kill away supports both in terms of numbers going to games and the atmosphere generated at the game?

Re: Dry away days

They forgot to add "If you are a rugby fan going to Murrayfiled on a train or bus, drink as much as you like".

What a load of garbage ffs.  These bits in particular are gold:

b. Vehicles are not to stop within 10 miles of the venue either enroute to, or on departure from the event unless prior agreement is obtained from the relevant Dedicated Football Officer.

c. Unless directed by a police officer, PSVs may stop at premises where intoxicating liquor is sold only if it is sold ancillary to a substantial meal. Prior agreement for meal stops where alcohol is available should be sought from the operator’s relevant Dedicated Football Officer.

d. PSVs are to arrive at the venue no earlier than two hours before and not later than one hour before the scheduled start of the game, unless otherwise directed by police.

e. PSVs are not to set down or uplift passengers at any unauthorised locations without prior permission of the police.

Re: Dry away days

What a waste of time and money. Of all the issues scotland is facing, is some away fans on a bus stopping at a pub on the way to the game, in the top 100?

I agree with Slateford, it's fine for middle class people to drink at rugby, but not working class people on their way to football.

The most likely outcome of this, is that people may stop going to away games, and end up watching the English premier league on sky, in their local wetherspoons.

When, will the people in charge of football and the country, actually consider the punters who go to games week in, week out?

Re: Dry away days

Did some quick sums based on the English figures.

Of all attendees to football games in 21/22, less than 1% of those were arrested. The gigues I found were inclusive of all arrests and not specifically alcoholic based. I couldn't also find total figures for league 1, 2 or conference leagues (or welsh) - so the number of under 1% would probably significantly drop.

20% of the arrests were for violent conduct - which I'd suggest, some of these are down to people's desire to fight rather than being driven by booze (some will be).

The social factors that came out - generally,  there was a downturn pre covid and then it spiked after covid (still below figures from 2011 by a good way). I'd suggest in a season or 2, the number would continue to decrease again once people got over the excitement of being able to go out again.

Such a heavy handed response and in honesty, will either drive people away from away days, which in turn kills the atmosphere or force people into binge drinking before you get a bus for a 1-2 hour journey. Crazy

I suppose it is only a consultation document, but, a rather poorly drafted one at that. Trying to define what is a “substantial meal” amuses me. A basin of cheesy nachos or a bridie would qualify, but, what happens if you share it?

If the driver of the designated PSV stops to allow supporters off for in impromptu pee, is he expected to inform the DFO and escort supporters into the loo?

In big games at Hampden involving the Old Firm it is quite common to hold one set of supporters back while the other disperses. What about the 30min rule?

As was said why should rugby supporters be treated differently? Is there any objective evidence to suggest they pose less of a threat?

Don't want to derail this thread into another dire, incredibly boring political debate - but at the last General Election if everyone in Scotland of voting age had voted for a party other then the party who went on to win that election, we'd still have had the same UK government for the last 4 years.

Re: Dry away days

Yeah, agree to an extent but then surely that's on the other parties who were completely incompetent in putting a challenge against a bumbling oaf. Remember too that Scottish and Northern english share a lot in the way of political leanings - so we aren't stranded and unable to change things.

But back on topic - the current govt and their civil servants coming up with hair brained ideas like this are bellends

Re: Dry away days

Do people still take drink on the bus? Obviously not allowed but plenty a driver back in the day would turn a blind eye or are the risks for the driver to great now?

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Re: Dry away days

I don't think so. Not the buses I've been on but there's always been a Liberal amount of pit stops on the way. This potential change would mean it would stop you drinking almost entirely - or get so full of it while you can, you will be hammered.

Re: Dry away days

They still drink plenty on the buses.

You've only to go alang Tannadice St or Sandeman St when the mings or the mongs buses are sitting there.

Ye'll see tons oe bottles and cans sitting on the pavement, and if yer really lucky, ye'll see the drehvers taakin them aff the bus and putin them on the pavement right in front of ye.

Re: Dry away days

Try my best not to comment on political debates on a football forum and this is in my opinion.

It will never come to any fruition,  police Scotland, the Scottish Parliament,  the whole of the Scottish football community all don't see any need for this nonsense.

If ever there was proof of how out of touch the current incumbents of number 10 Downing Street are with the average punter from Scotland its this.
