The January transfer window opens in just over 24 hours. This is a HUGE window for the club and we must not do what we did back in season 15/16 and finish the window weaker than when it started (who can ever forget selling John Souttar and Ryan McGowan and replacing them with no-one?). This was pivotal in us eventually finishing bottom and getting relegated to the Championship.
There are a few rumours going about already to kick things off.
Tony Watt interesting Killie and St.Mirren
Galatasaray looking at Aziz Behich
Ilmari Niskanen likely to leave this window
New Wigan Boss, Kolo Toure keen to 'assess' Jamie McGrath with a view to him being recalled
Only rumour i have heard regards us signing anyone is a bit of a Twitter rumour of us looking at David Wotherspoon of St.Johnstone (can sign for a club on F.O.C. as of January 1st).
And one other rumour that may well have a big bearing on any dealings we do make.
Harry Souttar leaving Stoke City for a Premiership club. Utd due a 15% cut in any transfer.

One player i noticed who is also free to sign a Pre-Contract as of tomorrow is a player we have been linked with previously in a couple of recent windows.
Sidney Van Hooijdonk.
Never worked out for him in Seria A with Bologna, but since going back to his native Holland with Heerenveen on loan he has 6 goals in 14 appearances in the Eridivisie. Still only 22.
Thinking about us going forward. He is a good age, has good experience and his best years are ahead of him.
Be a great signing imo.

Scott Tiffany could be worth a punt. Was really impressed with him when United played Thistle in the cup in Jan. He's out of contact in June too.

They can have him for a reasonable fee, let's get in a goalscorer instead.

I'd let him go for free tbh, especially if he can be persuaded to take Pawlett with him. Maybe room in the boot for Harkes too?
Happy to chip in for the petrol.

I would focus on central defence.
Edwards is free to leave at the end of the season.
Mulgrew may well retire
Graham IMO is just not good enough.

Looks like watt is gone
Follow up from above post
Salford City plan to sign Dundee United’s experienced striker Tony Watt on a free transfer this week.
Watt is due for talks in England just after scoring the winner for the Tannadice club against St Johnstone.
Despite the goal Watt can leave the SPFL outfit and come back to England - with the League Two side taking the biggest interest.

If we do this we better have a 1st team Striker ready to sign immediately.
Fletcher injury prone and wee Rory only 16.
Anaku not ready yet either going by the very limited minutes Fox has given him.
This team is crying out for a goal scorer.

If Watt does leave he'll have cost us about a quarter of a million and for what you may ask.
I'm not criticising anyone, he's made a career of it.
So I'd prefer if he stayed on to give us a better return for our money by playing regularly & trying for a 15-goal season or the like.
Because goal scorers that Tek is crying out for are like hen's teeth & there's not a club in the country that isn't looking for one.
Keeping Watt may be the answer.
If watt is the answer fuck knows what the question is.

Keep him we retain player with ability and an occasional real quality goalscorer when allowed to play centrally.
Keep him we keep a player prone to laziness and dedicated to oscar winning hollywoods - Ok with foriegn refs against the likes of Arnhem. In Scotland a waste of space.
All a moot point - if he wants away he's gone.
But like Tek says, imperative we get somebody in. Now not Jan 31st.

Despite being critical of Watt over the past year, i actually take your point.
But if we are getting a fee and getting his considerable wage off the books, it looks like it will happen.
Again, i just hope we have someone lined up pronto. Fox (and Courts before him) were always saying there were regular recruitment meetings and we are always on the lookout for players. So, with that in mind, we should be able to move swiftly, as we should already have targets in mind.

Plymouth Striker Ryan Hardie is out of contract at the seasons end.
The Scotsman has scored goals for them regularly over the past 3 seasons. Rated him at Livingston too.

Not sure how much substance there is to it but hearing Ryan Hardie's name being banded about.

30 games 10 goals since the summer
37 games 16 goals last season
Two not bad returns.

Bradford City also interested in Watt according to Scott Burns.

Thought he was really good at Livi and seems to have done pretty well down South, be happy to see him sign tbh

Harry Souttar leaving Stoke for big money could have a significant impact on what we’re able to do in the transfer market. Rumours of Wolves and West Ham preparing bids for Souttar, we get 15% of the fee I believe.

Not sure if folk have read my suggestion that we try and sign Ryan Hardie in post #17 and taken it as a 'rumour'.

Sounds likely, doesn't take much to get a rumour going at this time of year 😋

Tony Watt really is a strange one, big name signing, decent money spent at time to bring in leagues leading goal scorer, scores late winner against local rivals in last game and yet everyone a bit not fussed if he goes...
Offline
Tony Watt is reportedly one of, if not our highest earner.
The rumours of us willing to let him go for free are clearly to get his wage off the books and reinvest it elsewhere in the squad. Folks questioning why we’re not demanding a fee cos he’s under contract for another 2 years are clearly forgetting about this. We don’t hold the aces with this one.
Not a great situation but I fully understand it from the clubs perspective. Yes we could keep him on for all the backup reasons others have mentioned but is that really value for money? No
