Re: Transfer Deadline Day Thread

Quite happy to see Robson replaced with McGann—I think that’s an improvement for us. Would I be right in saying that we can still bring in a loan signing after the window shuts?

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Not sure about that.

We could still sign a free agent though.

Gotcha. There’s surely some half decent striker out there needing a team.

I wouldn't be so sure. Robson, typically, got a bad press on the forums.
At the very best I think all we've done is a player exchange, like for like.
And that's assuming McMann is better than decent.

At last smedDum. A post of yours i agree with! 😆

Far too early to say whether McMann is gonna be an upgrade or not.

He was, afterall, part of a Hamilton Accies backline that not only got relegated last season but conceded a whopping 67 goals in the process (17 more than Utd, for comparison).

He might be good, he might be bad, he might be indifferent. Need to wait and see.

Re: Transfer Deadline Day Thread

Not too bothered about Robson going.  I think he'll develop better away from Tannadice and don't think he's irreplaceable at his current level/form.  McMann sounds like he'll be an able replacement so as long as we paid less than we received probably a good bit of business.

Pleased to see that Kerr Smith appears to have remained with us.  I hope that we can get him some game time to allow him to develop and add some £ to his price for a January sale if that is inevitable.  Fuchs remaining is also huge and hopefully Siegrist is out for a shorter spell than anticipated and comes back in just as strong.

Not convinced Levitt is the cultured midfielder that we need, but has to be a decent bit of business.  Niskanen is clearly an unknown quantity, but he plays in an area that we have been crying out for resource for a couple of years so at least we are trying to address.

Carson and Mulgrew, whilst not longer term solutions, have clearly improved the squad and starting XI in that order.

The one glaring omission is that we are in a worse place up front than we were last year when scoring goals was our biggest problem.  McNulty is unlikely to be the answer to that problem - I just don't see him becoming a 20+ a season player, or anything like that.  Appere is not the solution even if fit (although not writing him off either).  We don't appear to have an Academy answer either.  There has been some chat on other forums of an out of contract experienced foreign striker being looked at and I do hope that there is some truth in that as, in my view, we are desperate for a real threat in the opponents box.

I still also think there is some tension between the Project and reality.  The fact that Courts has given no more game time (probably less) to the youngsters than MM might suit my perspective on life, but it is not consistent with the Project.  Mochrie getting his chance and failing to take it at the weekend is perhaps just evidence that we are not going to be able to rely on these guys contributing at first XI level for some time yet - which inevitably also means that we'll need to sell the likes of Siegrist, Fuchs and the likes of Edwards sooner rather than later and leaving us in a precarious position again.

Note I am trying to be balanced and give credit for the bits of the transfer window that are good, but I still feel that the Project is doomed.

Re: Transfer Deadline Day Thread

Butcher contract extension - not as bad as extending Pawlett, but again bit of a strange one.

Re: Transfer Deadline Day Thread

See a lot of Arabs on other forums laughing up their sleeves at Saints selling their two best players but failing to recognise that that is exactly the model that we are pursuing except we haven't really developed anyone yet.  The media release on Robson being an Academy graduate seemed a bit embarrassing.  Poor attempt to justify the Project.

Butcher is an integral part of the team, not strange at all really. Performance took a sharp upturn with his introduction on Saturday.

Fair enough - I can see that his dig is maybe more appropriate against teams like Hearts where their physicality requires more than just Fuchs, but would rather see Fuchs in with one or two more creative players against other teams.  I like his attitude, but not sure it is worth extending older guys who aren't necessarily first pick.

He is a first pick though, and only 30 🤣

Not sure he is first pick and his form hasn't been great.  Oh to be 30 again!

Wouldn't rule out Louis, depends if he's effective under Tam's regime. If he is effective he's the answer .
Don't know that Project 's doomed, strong word, give it a wee while longer. Granted we don't have long.

Otherwise, excellent post, sums it up perfectly.

Re: Transfer Deadline Day Thread

I think we're all looking for the hero who doesn't exist.
Teams score goals, not giant centre forwards from Romania.

Facundo Ferreyra.  Could be absolute nonsense, but would be a random name to pick!

He seems to have been looking at an option to go back to S America though so actually does seem a vrey longshot.

Nonsense of course they do, you just need to sign the right guys when they become available or have a scouting system that operates correctly.

I think that most United fans can see the limitations of the ability of our players and can see that we will struggle to play silky football. A target man allows us to get up the park quickly.

Scotland's national side is looking for a centre forward/big target man too.
If they can't find one, who can?
Teams can score goals.
