That’s Edwards signed a new deal until 2023
Great news.

Good news indeed.
One thing though. Says he has signed new two year deal keeping him to club till 2023. He already had a year left, did he not?🤔
So has he just signed a 1 year extension, do they mean?

Yeah 1 year extension
It will be on improved terms from now, so a new 2 year deal

If that's the case then that would be misleading. It's a new 1 year extension. He was here for the next year anyway.
I'm happy with the re-signing, but just want the truth told rather than spin.

I'd imagine improved terms are usually offered to make signing the extension attractive. I've no problem with that, I think he earned an improved deal anyway. He's certainly a player I'm delighted will be with us for the next couple of seasons. It's hardly spin, do you think we are trying to entice Shankland and Siegrist by saying "we want you to sign for another season and will be paying you exactly what we offered last time" you do realise that they can pocket themselves a nice signing on fee elsewhere if they walk at the end of their contract. You might not like it but it's how football, and agents work.

The tweet said:
We are delighted to confirm defender Ryan Edwards has committed his future to Dundee United by signing a new two-year deal, keeping him at Tannadice until 2023.
All pretty clear I'd say.

Yip pretty clear. That's what i read also.
So, was he out of contract until yesterday, or just about to be?

I might not like it? Like what? Ryan Edwards getting more money? Happy for him. Deserved.
That's not what i'm talking about though.
He's either signed a 1 year extension or a 2 year extension. Which is it? If it's a 1 year extension, just say that.

A new improved contract, replacing the one year left with a new 2 year deal......great news.
Or he was out of contract and signed a new 2 year deal......great news.....
Who cares either way

I don't care particularly. Was just interested to know which one it was. If it's the former then it's a bit of clever word play from Asghar, as i've never in my 40 years of supporting Utd heard us refer to the length of time someone signs a new deal to encompass a season which they were already tied to the club.
Anyway, i suspect i won't get the answer to my question. Glad he has re-signed.

Oh FFS. I can't believe I am rising to this trolling.
There are two options
Option 1. His contract was up at the end of this month (as suggested by this article Fleetwood Town want Dundee United defender Ryan Edwards - The 72)
Option 2. He had 1 year left on his existing deal. He now has a new 2yr deal that replaces his old deal.
It is not complicated, there is no a conspiracy, and in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter that much which one is actually true, it is unquestionably good news either way. TA isn't mesmerizing you with "his clever word play" you are just being a tit.
UPDATE: Thanks to the fantastic expose on this site, TA has had his hand forced, and there is now an interview up with Ryan Edwards on DUTV where it is stated he had a year left on his contract. Did he though, or is this just further TA deceptions? Perhaps we will never know.

So. As i suspected. It is a 1 year extension.
Thanks for your condescending reply though.👍

The point is, it's always worded like this whenever a player extends. Not really sure why you're making a big deal of it. Sounds like you're just trying to find another stick to beat the club with.

No. It's really not.
Again, i've never seen the club encompass a length of time that a player is already tied down into the announcement of a new deal.
I'm not making a big deal of it. I merely asked a question at the start, and now i have the answer that i suspected.

Clubs do this all of the time though, really can't understand what you're on about. It really does sound like you're just trying to find a negative in a positive.

Peter Pawlett signs new two-year deal with Dundee United to keep him at Tannadice until 2023

Pawlett was out of contract this Summer. So, yes his two year deal takes him upto 2023.
Edwards had a year left. So, it's not a 2 year deal. It's a 1 year extension.
My last word on it. Not worth the hassle.
