REF WATCH

27/1/21 St Mirren (H). JOHN BEATON. Two very dodgy back-to-back penalty awards within 3 minutes just before half time. Unremarkable apart from that but 2/10 for resigning us to our worst result of the season.

30/1/21 Hibs (H). GAVIN DUNCAN. So-so but glaring handball not given with the irony of John 'Eagle Eye' Beaton watching from 4th officialdom. That apart adequate and good leniency on the yellows (one to them late on) but handball blooper 5/10.

Re: REF WATCH

To concede the shankland handball and not get the Doig one is criminal.

For the ref to be conned by Shaugnessy (not enough said about that IMO) and then McNulty to play on yesterday, but not get the foul for not diving, is very frustrating. Doig again that time.

Can only think we're due large slices of luck Lilley, they do say it evens itself out over a season.
We did have Shankland's handball v the Dons at Tannadice back in October. It was Alan Muir did us a favour that day.
We must be the only team who don't go down in the box (McNulty as you said y'day) and don't vehemently protest palpably wrong decisions (the two v St Mirren).
I hope John Beaton has a conscience, I wonder what he was thinking as he drove home y'day after seeing Doig's handball & comparing it to Shankland's one in the armpit on Wednesday. And then Shankland gets booked!!
These decisions can cost people their jobs.

Re: REF WATCH

What is 4th official doing if he cannae overide thonn Hibs decision ?
Watching a clock, holding up a board and making a general nuisance of himself.
My 3 yr old grandson could do 2 of the 3.
Hate VAR.
Should look at cricket: Captain has 3 appeals per game, Captain has 20secs to decide whether to appeal or not. Fine tune it for fitba'.  Only the Australians cheat.

Re: REF WATCH

They’re saying it came off his body onto his arm/hand so it’s not a penalty.

Re: REF WATCH

3/2/21 Motherwell (A) DON ROBERTSON. The 3-in-1 penalty was comical & excuse him for not giving any of them. BUT the foul on McNulty later was a 70/30, defo most of these are given & am a wee bit surprised he didn't give it (cos of the 3-in-1 refusals). AND BUT he might have booked & so sent off wee Fuchs for his overhead kick, would have been a pen as well, we dodged a bullet there. The only other yellow I think was Harkes, I like refs who keep their cards in their pockets. Overall I thought he let the game flow as best he could so am going to give him a 7/10. Would have been an 8 but for turning down the 4th (McNulty) penalty claim.

Re: REF WATCH

6/2/21 Ross County (A) GRANT IRVINE. New-ish kid, had him a couple of times in the C'ship last season but today was only his 2nd Premier game. So he did ok in a game you might say was easy to handle. Not a single sight of a hand ball, no pens either. Booked 4 (3 of them ours), decent on fouls, all-in-all I'm giving him 7/10, would have been 8 had he not had a dodgy haircut this week.

Loses three points for having a haircut at all in lock down, I'm looking like a fucking hippy myself 😂

Re: REF WATCH

13/2/21 Livingstone (H) NICK WALSH. I was going to give him a harder time seeing it live but having seen the highlights on Sportscene he's earning a wee bit of a reprieve. So he's just 30-y-o and has been on the UEFA list for two seasons, an international referee, a rising star. He's a PE teacher at Uddingston Academy & likes Partick Thistle. It was first time we've had him this season. Today it's all about the two red cards & on re-visiting Pawlett's one the dreaded 'foot leaving the ground' has some validity. Their's hinged on 'last man/goal scoring opportunity' which it clearly wasn't & there was probably an element of the equalising factor, one red each. He also booked 3, 2 of them ours, Butcher & Fuchs.Giving him 7/10 seeing we won. Had sending off Pawlett on 30 mins resulted on us not winning he'd get less, two reds don't make a right.

Isn't it very unusual to have the same Ref for consecutive games?

Re: REF WATCH

21/2/21 The Rangers (A) NICK WALSH. He who we had last week v Livi at Tannadice and thro the week survived two appeals against his two red cards so probably came feeling pretty chuffed. Awarded a penalty for Fuchs on Morelos which had it been at the other end we would have been wanting so fair's fair. Booked three of ours & none of theirs which smacks of favouritism but maybe not. Overall nothing too contentious so will give him a tidy 8/10. Next week at Killie we have David Munro who as it happens was the ref when we lost 4-0 there back in August. The other game he's done for us this season is the 0-0 at St Mirren in November.

Re: REF WATCH

27/2/21 Killie (A) DAVID MUNRO. Coming up thro the ranks is young David & he even got his first Euro taste this season. 30 fouls in the game, most of them petty causing players on both sides to be buying fouls on the plastic. He booked just one of them (debatable, Kilty in the box...) & 4 of us incl Connolly which could have quite easily been a different colour of card. He pleased neither side, particularly the home team & you could overhear their dissatisfaction. So yeah, he was better for us than for them & we should be grateful. All in all he'll have better games but I'm giving him 7/10 for helping us to a draw we scarecely deserved.

Re: REF WATCH

Kevin Clancy is ref for the big Sky game on Sunday v Sellic.
He's been at Tannadice just once this season, our opener 1-1 v St Johnstone.
He booked O'Halloran for a 2nd time just on half time that day and that remains Clancy's only sending off this season.
He's done two of our away games this season, the 4-0 at Ibrox & the 0-0 at the Dons at new year.
He's only had Sellic once this season, a month ago at Killie where Sellic won 4-0.
He's been a FIFA ref since 2012.

Not sure of his inside leg measurement

Re: REF WATCH

7/3/21 CELTIC (H) KEVIN CLANCY. Nothing controversial here at all in the way of hand balls & penalties so not much to get wrong for Clancy. But the 7 (5 us, 2 them) yellows dished out was far too many. None till the 44th minute but then he went on the rampage booking 4 in 5 minutes either side of half time & no way was it a dirty game. There are far too many bookings these days, they get handed out for next to nothing. Laurence was for beligerance which refs love. Black mark for the Dode Fox assistant - 2 shockers, 1 us attacking 1st half (half a yard on), 1 them attacking 2nd half (glaringly off). Give Clancy 7/10.

Re: REF WATCH

Think it was McNulty brought down Scott Brown - saw yellow - fair enough.
Later Brown pulls down one of our guys - glaring yellow - gets away wi it.
Story of Brown's career.

Let game flow. 8/10

Re: REF WATCH

Ref on Saturday at Tannadice v Aberdeen is Greg Aitken.
He's one of the newer Category 1's and not a FIFA.
He's done as many C'ship as Prem games this season, we've only had him once, Hamilton (A) mid-January, score 0-0.
He booked 4 that day, 3 of ours, Neilson, McNulty & Reynolds.

Re: REF WATCH

20/3/21 Aberdeen (H) GREG AITKEN. After several games only watching on TV I'm becoming aware that it's hard to rate a ref, you really got to be there to see the flow of the game & his refereeing. Anway that'll need to do til the end of the season. So, ONE BOOKING! Ferguson (Aberdeen) and was it not a wee bit dodgy too...? Had to stop watching the replays... when was the last time there was just one booking in a game. For that & allround performance & letting the game go (tho there were 24 fouls) I'm tempted to mark high. BUT...Taylor on Fuchs 2nd half, in the box??? Taylor had the ball behind him & simply barged wee Jeando to the ground from where he picked himself up looking a bit cheesed off & no wonder. I'm puzzled by this, was it so blatant & somehow innocent looking that Aitken missed it? 2-0 would have been rare. However I'm still going to give Greg Aitken 9/10 for bookings leniency, letting the game go & general allround performance. I'll be looking out for him next time to see if this was a fluke.

Re: REF WATCH

Booking for a dive could have easy been an offski for a dive.
Worse could have been penalty so yellow was about right.
Still scrarchin ma heid over body check and no penalty.
- Didnae affect result
Incidentally Micky's generally pretty cool wi they decisions in saying they balance out  over course of the season.
Main thing - calm heid, let the game flow.
Agree wi 9/10

Re: REF WATCH

Louis Ferguson's yellow has today been rescinded on appeal.
So if it wasn't simulation what was it...?
Yes, that's what I thought - a penalty.
Thankyou Greg Aitken, your 9/10 is rubber stamped.
Would have been a perfect 10 had the Taylor on Fuchs penalty been awarded.
On reflection tho, I shouldn't be awarding top marks to a ref who makes two penalty blunders.
Need to remind myself, two wrongs don't make a right.

Re: REF WATCH

Steven McLean is the ref for Saturday. One of our most experienced pro refs. Started 2008.
We've had him twice this season, back-to-back games at Tannadice just before Xmas, Utd 1 Rangers 2 on the 13th December then Utd 2 Killie 0 ten days later. Can't recall anything controversial.
He's not  a FIFA ref now but was from 2010-2017.
Tomorrow is actually his 40th birthday.

His brother is Brian who had a season with us, 2012/13. Centre half. He's had a dozen clubs, now at Morton but getting on a bit.

Re: REF WATCH

3/4/21 PARTICK THISTLE (H)  STEVEN McLEAN. Well having mulled this over for 24 hours and trying to find a reason not to, I'm giving Stevie boy a perfect TEN. I'll tell you why. It's a tale of two goalie/defender/attacker ****/ups. Just before Partick scored there was an ugly with Mehmet/Bolton/Gordon which 5 times out of 10 would have resulted in a penalty award. Then on 90 + 1 Wright/Niang/Clark provided another ugly which 5 times out of 10 would have resulted in a foul by Clark. End result we're still in the Cup & if I was Partick I think I'd be fizzing. On top of these Stevie boy made light of the Edwards/Graham contretemps which if you were to believe the away dugout (5 yards) would have had us with ten men, a goal down & running out of time. Stevie boy also kept his yellow in his pocket which is always good in my book (pun?), one yellow only, their Docherty. Generally, he was not over-fussy on fouls, there were but 23 which is a relatively low count. SO...not only does Steven McLean get a perfect (10/10) but he's my Man of the Match also (well which United player would you have given it to?)

Re: REF WATCH

10/4/21 HAMILTON (A) BOBBY MADDEN. This was the 3rd time Basher had done us this season, Peterhead (0-1) in October & Motherwell (1-1) on Boxing Day, both at Tannadice. He gets around does Basher, 9 of his 31 games this season have been as a FIFA ref in Europe so he is highly rated. Only 16 fouls & only 3 bookings (2 of them ours), easy-oasy game, never noticed him too much which is usually a good thing, got in about the job. Controversies? Two I would say, last 5 mins in each penalty box & their shout was better than ours IMHO. Louie was starting the 50m Butterfly whilst Pawlett's wee tug on an Accie...well I've seen them given and it was 90+ too, always good for a bit of ref's limelight. So I'm giving Basher 9/10 no problem & he's welcome the next time we get him.

Re: REF WATCH

16/4/21 FORFAR ATHLETIC (A) Sc Cup DON ROBERTSON. This was the 6th time we'd had the Don this season which must make him our most familiar ref. He did us twice in the Betfred v Kelty & St Johnsone (both at home) and 3 times in the league, Hibs (H) in August, Livi (A) in December & M'well (A) in February. He's just 34 & unusually is an ex-pro with some weegie clubs. He's a young FIFA ref & has been pretty busy in Europe this season tho mostly as a 4th official. Anyway the game...an innocuous performance but that's what we look for, you don't notice the ref when he's doing a good job. He booked 3, just one of ours (Butcher) which isn't recorded in the stats somehow. Awarded 16 fouls which isn't a lot.so in a bit of a meh game which was easy to handle I'm giving the Don an innocuous 8/10.

On Wednesday at Killie we're getting Alan Muir who missed Shankland's hand ball near the goal line v Aberdeen at home in October in the 0-0 game so he has a lot to live up to!
