Strange to say after a defeat but ...
Beat performance of the year bar none.
Best goal of the year bar none.
Great workrate, team spirit, & playing for one another. Chased and chased and chased for 90, they were the ones pleased to hear final whistle. That performance will stand us in good stead.
Special shout out to Connolly who looked composed and 3 or 4 times took on and glided past his man. Fuchs who's looking more and more like Gomis. Benji - the usual. Shanks, up and down the park, deep defending, sublime touches in the middle then being asked to feed off scraps as lone striker. Obviously team no' set up to suit him and off the boil that he missed the chance on 29mins.

There will be no signings in January, i'd imagine.
Which is why i fear for us for the rest of the season because we just don't have anyone who can create chances. And all our forwards are similiar type players who are totally ineffective outside the penalty box.
Can't even play it long to them.
Our only hope is perhaps a loanee from somewhere with the parent club more or less covering the full wage.

Our only hope?

Thats the problem playing against a team miles ahead of you in quality. You need to work extra hard to create chances. We did well to create in the first half. We did try towards the end, but The Rangers had complete control over the game at that stage.
They are a better team, granted. However creating absolutely nothing at home while losing, is not good enough for Dundee United.. no matter who we play in this league. We need to show some ambition and try actually scoring goals and winning games rather than absolute mediocrity.

Did you watch the game? The 2nd half, you have a point. But we threatened more than I expected we would in the first half.

Before yesterday, they'd played 16 league games and conceded in 2 of those games. Celtic never laid a glove on them at home with all their internationals. Meanwhile we had a bench made up of 2 x 16 year old and 4 x 17 years olds.
We tried a wee press in the second half and they were up the park in about 4 seconds. If you decide to have a go, you'll find yourself down and out. The way we played allowed us a punchers chance of landing a late blow. We even put our biggest player up front for about 7 or 8 minutes.
We've been too conservative a lot this year, not yesterday.

Yeah first half good, but my original post says we could have made an attempt to score from 80mins onwards. We were losing anyway. Lose 3-1 trying to get a goal back or let’s just accept we’re going to get beat 2-1 like we did. First half good, Second half really poor.

Rangers have conceded 4 goals all season. We were trying to score as far as I saw, just because it didn't come off doesn't mean they weren't trying. I've been trying to win the euro millions for ages now, I promise you it's not through lack of trying that I'm still a skint fucker 😂

yip, thought he got the tactics spot on. We did put Edwards up front for the last 5 minutes or so and that was the right time to do it. We only got one ball on his head though from about 3 or 4 chances to do so and his contact was disappointing. Calculated gamble. Didn't pay off.

Ok we lost. Naebidy likes that.
But it's the manner of losing and Huns performances prior to this game we're talking about here.
Go back to predictions, we all (including me) expected us to get pantsed. Naebidy gave us a chance of scoring.
The goal was brilliant Robson wide out, perfect cross, Liam no just at back post, but 10 or 15 out fae back post wi 2ft to aim at volley into side netting. Goal of the year so far for me.
First half we could and in the case of Shanks you'd have to say should have had 2 more. We battled all the way, massive turnaround from some of the absolute shite against shitey teams we've had to put up with.
There's a lesson there, realistically we were never going to win but we attacked them on and off the ball for 90mins, a good team came no far away from getting a point off a team of champions (hate saying that) as witnessed by them running down the clock at the end. We made them look ordinary.
If I had to pick a fault - Harkes, he's just no' working in Scottish football, intelligent player, damp squib, get Butch in there.
2 nil down to Livi I'm raging, 2 v 1 against them - hate losing but great performance, all the more so because of Covid ridden bench.
Concentrate on the positives.

Agree with all that. Must be make or break for Harkes soon as despite a few good games, flatters to deceive more often than not and hasn't looked any better at a higher level where he might get (slightly) more time on the ball. His ball out wide to Robson for the goal was very good but one swallow doesn't make a summer and you can't help but feel if we find someone to complement Fuchs, wed be a much better team.
My slight bit of realism is that type of game suited this team. Pressure off, no expectation to control or create or really for any decent build up possession. all we had to do to 'play well' was defend doggedly then get it up the pitch early against a team that were collectively quite high up the pitch offering us space to attack.
Hibs away might also suit us to an extent although you'd expect more of an even contest therefore, slightly more pressure to compete and create and slightly less good will for effort alone.
The tweak of formation to more of a recognised 5-4-1 actually worked and I would rather see that with emphasis on linking up out wide than a defensive 5-3-2 where the full backs have too much ground to get up and support and the strikers are isolated. Formation means nothing alone without the tactics!

Let’s all take consolation from the thought he might have made the difference for them tonight. Ach well.
