Re: St Johnstone v Utd - Tuesday 10th November

We were a wee bit better tonight in terms of passing. But fuck me, we're a hard watch.

Zero shots on target. Again.

You feel like you could watch us play all night and no see us score.

I thought Fuchs was so-so tbh. Not bad, per se. But in no way looked like a player who is going to influence a game for us in midfield.

McNulty i thought was pretty quiet.

Mellon said we would only bring in players who would improve the team. So far i am seeing nothing to suggest either have or will. But i hope to be proven wrong and it is still early days for both.

Motm for me was Mehmet. Very good handling all night from the big man. And great saves in the shoot-out (great to see a Utd keeper saving pens at long last!!).

Sporle and McMullan done 'ok' too. But the final ball from both is letting them down. Both deserve at least some credit though for being the only two men in tangerine willing to try and beat a man. Far too many in our team just pass sideways or back. Both must now be in with a chance of starting our next match.

Edwards and Reynolds done well at the back. The latter taking a good penalty in the shoot-out.

Connolly should have gave away a penalty for his clumsy challenge early doors and his own penalty in the shoot-out was amongst the worst i've ever seen. Hard to watch him in a Utd jersey.

A few days rest now and then we welcome Hamilton. I don't expect it to be a thriller

Re: St Johnstone v Utd - Tuesday 10th November

Deniz, good game, saved 2 pens, nearly 3 - Conways took a wicked spin to go in. If ever we're 119 mins into a cup game get him on.

4 well executed pens by us. Connolly should have stuck to Gaelic football.

Sporle - positive, always looking to get forward.

Edwards - solid.

Still to much lamping the ball up the park.

Fuchs a work in progress.

McMullan - ran at them and chased all night. Never looked penetrating, but then none of them did.

Harkes on no'' Powers  ? ??

Overall a bit more positive but still lacking incisiveness.

6.5 out of 10 a point up on the usual 5.5 out of 10.

Re: St Johnstone v Utd - Tuesday 10th November

I would say it's unusual for 2 CHs to be among the first 5 penalty takers.  Some of the so called more forward thinking players clearly hiding when it matters.

Re the chances of progression rather than the performance last night...
I'd say because we gained the bonus point we have an even chance of going thro.
Two of the groups have already gone but the other five hold possibilitues of our 8 points (along with our goal difference) of us being one of the two remaining four 2nd best places.
Not jumping the gun (ok I am) but the 2nd round is the last weekend this month & if we do make it we'll not have that as a blank weekend.

I don't share your optimism.

We are as good as out.

Ok, done a bit of forensic analysis.
Pray for Arbroath v Elgin on Saturday to be a draw. Doesn't matter who gets the bonus point.
Pretty much hinges on that.
As long as St J beat Peterhead.
We'd be 90% certain to go thro if these two games go our way.

90% is optimistic to say the least.  Looking at the tables and fixtures I’ll be amazed if we go through.  Groups B,E,F,G & H all be likely to have 2nd better off than us and that’s before Arbroath/Elgin.

Re: St Johnstone v Utd - Tuesday 10th November

St Johnstone missed quite a few chances to win the game, Hendry  was especially poor. If May and Conway had started, I think we would have been beaten. Edwards was the only one of the back three I would give pass marks to, and even then he was slow.

Two things about Connolly though: the penalty that according to Craigan was a stick-on looked, to me, to be doubtful. Connolly got first to the ball and it jammed under his foot, and I think the Saints player knew that too, as few, maybe even none of the opposition claimed for it. As an aside, Craigan commentating was a blethering cunt, he had Deniz measuring 6'8" among his many howlers.   The other Connolly point, although his penalty was awful, I wonder who else fans would have chosen to take one, looking at our finishing line up?

McNulty looks faster than I remember him being, McMullan took his chance but as others have probably noted, he, similar to almost every other player in tangerine, wasn't able to consistently pick out a team mate. He gets criticised for his final ball: I don't know who in our present starting line ups can find team mates. Some are worse than others.

Fuchs should be ok with a few games under his belt. Sporle is a different option in attack, but he struggled defensively at times against Shaun Rooney, who is no great shakes. Smith is wasted in a back 3/5. I'd like us to bin 3/5 at the back, but we don't seem to have two complimentary central defenders, so Mickey is maybe compensating by playing the three.

If we qualify, we're likely to get a heavy thrashing from one of the Glasgow twins. We don't deserve to anyway, getting beaten at home by Peterhead, registering one shot on target in that game, which I think happened in injury time.

Who would i rather took a pen than Connolly?

Louis Appere, Liam Smith, Luke Bolton or Calum Butcher.

Fair enough. I've never seen any of these boys take a penalty.

Nonetheless, St Johnstone's best striker Stevie May missed his, as did their regular penalty taker Scott Tanser.

Connolly's miss remined me of Roberto Baggio's which decided the '94 World Cup Final. That was, of course, a much more important match

Anybody can miss a penalty.

Everybody  should make the goalie work as did May, Tanser

Ach well after a few twists & turns we were just 12 minutes away from being into today's draw.
78 mins was when Alloa took the lead over Stenny having been 2-0 down.
That's life, just have to suck it up.

Re: St Johnstone v Utd - Tuesday 10th November

We'll need to re-schedule Jan 23 Hibs at Tannadice for Betfred semis.
One consolation with no fans in is does it matter if a sacred Saturday fixture is transferred to midweek?

Re: St Johnstone v Utd - Tuesday 10th November

We have two midweek games following that date so might be moved to earlier in the week? otherwise, you are looking at late Feb/March before it can be played.
