5 subs rule approved!

Shocked at this... but there we go:The written resolution to approve the use of up to five substitutes in Scottish Premiership matches for the 2020/21 season has been approved by Premiership clubs. This means the new rule will take effect for the opening set of fixtures this weekend.Under the new rules, clubs will be able to name a bench of up to nine players but, in making their five subs, can only halt play on three separate occasions during the course of the match.
The change, recommended to clubs by the SPFL Board on Friday, is a temporary alteration for the 2020/21 season and is designed to help clubs deal with a more congested than usual fixture calendar which may see reduced recovery time for players.

Great news for some of the younger players. 9 subs per game too. Interesting change. We're going to need a bigger dugout.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

This maybe useful for UTD as with the pace of the game in top league being quicker and our pre season being stop-start with the managerial changes I can see the team running out of steam in the last 15-20 mins.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

This rule will only benefit teams with a strong bench.

Dead against this and the water breaks.

Completely over sanitising our game. As it is the English game is now unwatchable (for me) what with the constant stoppages.

I think there will be plenty of room in the stands for all the subs. I agree that this will favour the teams with more squad depth but let's face it, things are already pretty slanted in that direction anyway so won't make a great deal of difference. Might favour us a little over the likes of Livingston, Accies etc though. I'll take any advantage we can tbh.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

Mental.

I would just say that if we're going to do it, indeed in any case, why stop the game ? ?

The more football we get in 90 mins the better the value.

We've a fourth official who's nuisance value, give him something to do, earn his money.  Ref already has a thingy in he's lug - use it.
Not rocket science - Aussie League have have been doing for years.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

Not a fan of this rule myself.  Not actually sure what benefit it has?

Im sure a couple of Championship clubs struggled to even name 5 subs at parts of last season.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

will we see teams throwing on 4 defenders for the last 10 mins when they're a goal up?

...or 4 attackers if they're a goal down?
I remember a pre-season freindly at East End Park about 3 or 4 years ago where we brought on 10 subbies at the same time, maybe 10-15 mins into the 2nd half.
It was funny seeing the players lined up, strung along in a big line in front of the dugout.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

SPFL confirming then.

You can make up to 5 subs during a match and have up to 9 subs on your bench. Absolutely ridiculous.

This rule will only really benefit 2 teams.

They can now afford to bring off and rest all their top men when they are twatting a Ross County or Accies. And not only bring on 3 fringe men for game time but also blood a couple of kids in their first team every other week.

Also means less chance of risk of injury to their top players given the less game time they will play. Which will aide these club in Europe perhaps. But also, undoubtedly domestically.

Whereas the rest of the teams who are all much of a muchness and have thin squads will probably not even put nine subs on their bench and will reastically probably only have 1 or 2 players they actually can call upon to try and boost them in a match.

Just another little thing that gives the 'Glasgow Two' a little advantage over the others. Like they need it.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

Got to agree with Tek's post in its entirety.

How many times have we looked at our bench and thought "who do we have available as a game changer?" Not many.

when we played Sevco 2nd 11 in a friendly recently the majority of their fringe players would walk into most other Premiership 1st teams.

Most squads this season will be short on numbers so will not really benefit from this change.

The clubs must have a different view to the fans in that case, did it not require a 75% majority to pass?

I agree of course that the advantage is going to be with the uglies but they generally dominate anyway so won't make much difference in the long run if you ask me.

As I said previously, it may give ourselves a little advantage over the likes of Livingston, Accies and the farmers etc over the course of the season. I'll take any kind of leg up we can tbh.

That's a good point Arabdownsouth. I can't remember any vote being reported by the media.

It'll help the Glasgow twins more, but that's just what Scottish football does, to the handicap of other teams. I'm still wondering who in the SPFL thought nobody would be cynical about keeping the 'big' fixture til as late as possible, then starting all the other three leagues the same weekend, reducing the spotlight on 30 clubs as they set out on their campaigns.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

A good/bad thing will be that lots of youngsters will get a chance. We may see some kids take their chance and shine while others may be thrown in too early and sink. Will be interesting to see at least

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

It's only for 1 season due to the extra
cup fixtures.
I wouldn't worry about the 'big two' as no other team will ever win the league again.
tinkering with the bubbles is not going to change that.

Same can apply to us when we're 'twatting' Accies & County. The likes of Kai Fotheringham will be looking forward to it.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

Folk always looking for the negatives. People get too worked up about celtic and rangers. I think its a good thing and as smeds says it gives us a chance to blood youngsters if we're comfortable in any games. Gotta be a good thing.

Re: 5 subs rule approved!

This is great news for young players. I look forward to seeing 4/5 young players on the bench every week.
