At least the window is open until October.
I think we have to hope that we have 2 or 3 Louis Appere-type breakthroughs from youngsters for at least the first few weeks of the season. I fully expect us to sign a handful. But clearly Mellon is keen on patience. For what its worth, if he can make every player 5% better than we'll be fine, but we have a very tough start.

I still think we will see one in next week and he is keeping things tight lipped.

It would be interesting to look back on signings made in the first two weeks/month of new managers of the past. My guess is they haven't exactly been the best.
I'd love to have some positive distractions at the moment, but not at the expense of being able to make good signings a month from now once MM really know what's what.

The lack of MM's own backroom staff this close to the season opener is a bit strange too.!

Very strange.
I am becoming concerned that he is going to have to do this job with his hands tied. I am hearing no positivity at all regards new signings or staff recruitment.
Baffles me some of my fellow supporters feel no anxiety over our current squad.
A squad that struggled in the Championship post-xmas and is now weaker than it was since our last fixture.

Careful tek u will be acussed of being negative ,your correct re mellons interview same as last weeks almost word for word im working with the champions here 3 times no less in other words there will be no new signings.
I've been accused of that for over 20 years. Since i first posted on the Arab Jacques website (anyone remember that?).
I say what i feel is the truth and will continue to do so.
Not concerned in the slightest if people think i am 'negative'. I'm fiercely ambitious for Dundee Utd.

As mentioned in the other thread, I think it’s sensible choices of friendly opponents. Let’s us get used to what we’ll come up against and also gives Mellon tangible evidence of what he already thinks he needs.
He said himself it’s a step up and we need to realise that. Rather he does this sooner rather than later too but much rather it’s the correct type of player to compliment and improve the current squad.

I think the playing side of things will sort itself out after the arbitration has been concluded one way or another and the manager will strengthen where he sees fit. It is still the lack of backroom staff that concerns me. McCulloch and Forrest I'm assuming are gone. Bo and Brian Grant helping with first team matters but surely MM needs/wants his own guys in.

I'm relaxed about it. Do I want signings? Yes. I'd like 3 minimum. But I'm trying to not worry too much about it. This last few months put into perspective that you cant predict anything in life let alone football.
If Mellon can improve the current squad then we'll get through the first few weeks of the season before he figures out what we really need. Boys like Smith, Robson, Harkes, Appere, McMullan, Appere and Shankland should all naturally improve with age and they are all part of the 11 we won the league with. If a couple of youngsters can step up then it will feel like new sigings. Time will tell what we need.
We are all saying we need centre halves but what if Graham or Neilson impress? We need a winger but what if Fotheringham steps up and delivers? Lots of options in the squad at the moment but a bigger than usual chunk of it is youngsters.

I'm pretty sure they wont be.!! They weren't Neilsons and have different roles at the club.
Maybe he was waiting to see what his old No 2 was doing but I believe he's just got the full time gig at Tranmere..

Wouldn't say no anxiety but its also a squad who has played 2 highly performing prem teams with our 2nd and 3rd choice keepers while only losing 1 goal. Perhaps the team underperformed under robbie?

Whats the thoughts on Charlie Adam?
Controversial but has been in the papers saying a) hes open to coming home to Scotland and b) hes got family ties with micky Mellon....
Could of course be 2 + 2 = 5 but interesting one. Undoubted talent but perhaps an area we are already suitably covered in?

He'd never sign for Utd in a million years.

He's finished I reckon, and has been for a wee while. Plenty of experience but it's a No from me.
Like Tek says also, I doubt he'd even want to come to us. That lot have fantasised about him signing for them for years... Would be unbelievably hilarious to watch the seethe if he was even linked to us though.

Understand where you are coming from - but i will start a rumour right here - Charlie Adam to come to tannadice as player/coach.
Reasons
They know each other quite well
Adam wants to get into coaching
Hes open to a return to Scotland
He has family in the area
(Ignoring the fact he's a dee - maybe career is now more important to him than team loyalty)
