I wouldn't write off the squad yet, don't go looking for 4 or 5 new (probably expensive) faces in before St Johnstone on Aug 1. Some considerations -
a) money is going to be tight, all over I reckon, the reality of this has to kick in soon, the economy could well be shattered. Football Academies are already shutting down. We do appear to be immune at the moment but the Ogrens aren't bottomless pits.
b) we still have the big squad that got us up & the kids are a year older. A league up is a challenge for all the players & no more Alloas on Friday nights. Players will rise to the challenge.
c) new broom sweeps clean, watch out for improvements in the players
d) camaraderie will be even better than it was, the players will love playing under Mellon
e) us - the fans are buzzing & we have our part to play when we get back in
So don't go screaming for new players, ok one or two maybe, but no wholesale changes. We can take our winning mentality with us.We do not have a big squad.
Currently have a 1st team squad of 18 players.
But 3 of them are boys with just minutes under their belts or none at all (Glass, Mochrie, Freeman). And that's also including both our Goalies.
We can barely make up a starting XI and bench even allowing for a FULLY fit squad.
Madness not to make 3 or 4 signings in the next month.
Actually there's 21 in our 1st team squad, well there's 20 on the Fishul which doesn't include Mochrie. Then I'm sure there are another 3 or 4 more Freeman/Glass/Mochrie types away to graduate. I think it's important to give kids a chance. There are some diamonds in there & you need your Appere types to get a chance.
Yeah we're 4 years out of the top flight & we're going to get some sort of culture shock regardless of how many squad players we have but I would not be setting my sights on Europe. More realistically I'd bite your hand off for 6th but being outside that, 7th, 8th or 9th, would be first season back success for me. The season after - top 6.
20 if you include Adam King and young Jake Davidson, yes.
But i think both will be back out on loan Smedz.
18 who could be considered first team 'ready' and 2 or 3 of those (as i say) kids themselves.
We need bodies in, there can be little arguement there surely?

To have any chance of having a comfortable season, not worried about relegation, then yes, I'd say we certainly need at the very least 3 players who are at least as good as, if not better than what we already have.

He's an affy blether
And 30 years in Engerland with an accent like he'd never left Pollok!
Anyway I love him & desperate to get started.
No talk of pre-season games yet?
Edit - couldnae spell Pollok

He's just in the door. Give him a couple of days to settle in and I'm sure signings will be made.

I wasn't suggesting they were made immediately.
But we do need to act fairly quickly regards one or two positions.

Never been one of my strong points.
I want tomorrow, yesterday.
If we even sign a good CH before St.Johnstone i'll feel a bit more relaxed about our prospects.👍

I definitely think a CH and a Winger would make everyone feel a lot more comfortable about our season starting. I expect the transfer window to be open for quite a while this season.

October I've read. Not sure if that's a fact though.

I think we have a couple wingers in our squad, just got to play them there.

I think Chalmers should be expected to step up this season. We also have Meekison and Fotheringham training with the first team this summer who are both wingers but I don't think we can rest too much expectation on their shoulders.
Pawlett just doesnt have it for me and I think any time he has played out wide he have looked a weaker team.
Louis should be up front but is definitely an option out there.
I think we only really have McMullan who is an out and out winger. And he cant be relied on to deliver week-in-week-out.
Shame we don't get to the byeline often, can't beat a good cutback.
Laurence would enjoy it too.
Maybe MM likes his teams getting to the byeline.

Likes to play with wingers is what I read smedDUm, so hopefully knows of some decent ones.
I wonder what Micky Mellon thinks about our young players if he's had a decent look at them yet.
And how they compare with his TRFC youngsters.
I'd love to see a couple of Louis Apperes breaking thro this season.
Won't be in central defence tho, unless there is someone totally exceptional with a Pem lge physique.
Is Freeman a full back?
Different topic - Adrian Sporle - is there a player there? I'd like to think so. Plays in the Andy Robertson mould?

On Ceres arabs too.
Interesting choice. Knows scottish game I guess. Is it telling hes been working with kids or just the right man for the job.
On googling him, I see he spent time at tranmere - possibly when Mellon was there as a player? Also cant be too shabby if he has worked for scotlabd, n Ireland and celtic...(not to mention being an assistant at h****s

Frail is a highly rated coach, worked mainly with youth teams in recent years - was at Celtic as u20 coach for a while then moved to work with Northern Ireland youth set up for last four years. Wonder if Mellon was with him at Hearts as a youth player way back?
EDIT: probably not, looks like Frail was with Dundee as youth player

Wonder if the aforementioned Welsh man Ryland Morgan will become part of the backroom team also.
