Neilson had a big hand in hiring both of them as mentioned in numerous interviews. Certainly not ideal... but interesting nonetheless. We need someone who can bring their own style and ethos to the squad whilst not upsetting the apple cart too much.

Yep the absolute worst time for anymore instability, anyone thinking this is a good thing needs their head looking at imo.

He’d be sacked by October if he’d stayed, and we’d be paying him the 6 figure compensation.  And we’d have a new guy relying on Someone else’s squad to turn things round.  Robbie wasn’t good, we need to appoint far better.

David Weir? What?

I think you maybe right about Weir. He is doing a MSD at Manchester Met. I wonder.....

Hearts fans are saying Davie Weir is going to be announced as their new DoF.

Re: Hearts want Neilson

6 figure sum for an easily replaced employee is good for me.

Would be mair upset loosing a player for the same money that other teams felt worth spending the same cash on.

Think we've won here mair than lost out.

Unless we bring in some left field USA type which I FKN doubt but read some dafties worry about,  Chad Hoggan can GTF 😉

Neilson is easily replaced for alot of reasons.

Re: Hearts want Neilson

Not too fussed about this. His tactics were bonkers at times and players constantly played out of position. It was Shankland that got us promoted—a player that was probably not on Robbie’s radar as he probably thought we’d no chance getting him. He was far too cagey in a lot of games and would rather hold on to a one nil than go for it. This could be a blessing in disguise.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

If I'm right in thinking this... post wee Jim - only Robbie and Levein have actually left United to move onto another job?

Re: Hearts want Neilson

Can't argue with that LEK.
Means 87.5% of DUFC managers (post JYM) got the heave-ho.
I guess that %age concurs with most clubs.

Did Luggy not resign? Was only a matter of time before he was sacked anyway...

I'm not that fussed about RN leaving. I don't normally make predictions but I would have bet on us sacking him by October.

Actually you are right. He apparently resigned for 'personal reasons' if I remember right. But we'd finished 99/00 terribly after losing Doddsy and we'd lost the first two games of the following season. Maybe Jim did him a favour and said he'd allow him to resign due to everything he did for the club.

What's LAURIE ELLIS doing?
DUFC manager with the best record in our entire history.
FACT (sorry Gunboat).
2 wins out of 2. That's 100% when I was at school.

P.S. Only kidding. What is he doing? QP with Ray?

Not sure mate - did he not lose 2-0 away at Ayr after Csaba was sacked??

Re: Hearts want Neilson

More serious thoughts than wondering if the season ticket winners would still get a meal with Tony and Robbie:

Neilson leaves with my good wishes, and gratitude for getting us up where others failed. Of course, I hope he falters at HoM.

But I’m not disappointed he’s gone, and not too concerned about the timing either, given his success, on the surface with us, might have brought interest from down south closer to the start of the new season. We’ve plenty of time to bring in a replacement, and we’ve got a fee for an employee at a difficult time.

Having never been convinced that Robbie Neilson was the right fit for United, here are my reasons:

While we have had some encouraging results this past season, even in the displays v ICT and Dundee early on there were concerning periods. The only dominant exhibitions, for me, were the 6-0 v a poor Morton, the same side who this year could have taken all three points at Tannadice in the unconvincing 7 game league run prior to the ending of the season, and the game at Inverness. Yes, we had the nine game run which followed two dreadful defeats to Alloa and Qos, a run which really sealed the title for us, but can’t recall thinking we were a really good team apart from one of these games.

Over and above the Alloa and QoS results mentioned, there have been several more drab matches, which I’ll not list here to prevent any pain being evoked in supporters’ minds. And they were dreary because of the style of play, and the lack of certain types of players.

This might not be a comprehensive list (Charlie Seaman on loan is omitted) but here are the boys Robbie has signed:
Rakish Bingham
Troy Brown
Calum Butcher
Mark Connolly
Keiran Freeman
Ian Harkes
Adam King
Aidan Nesbitt
Peter Pawlett
Dillon Powers
Mark Reynolds
Lawrence Shankland
Cammy Smith
Liam Smith
Osman Sow
Adrián Sporle

From that, successes would be, in diminishing order, Shankland, Butcher, Liam Smith, Harkes, Connolly and Reynolds, and I’ve grave doubts the last two would do a job in the top league. Of players Robbie Neilson brought having had previous experience working with them, only Smith has been a success, with Pawlett, Nesbitt, King and Sow all disappointments. However, of that four, Aidan Nesbitt, again for me, showed more of a spark, and we let him leave.

Wide players: a glaring lack of these being signed has been a feature of every transfer window. The departed manager had three full windows and didn’t address this issue, in huge part resulting in the dreary style of play. We often looked cumbersome and slow, even in the Championship winning displays, and without Shankland’s goals and a very poor standard of opposition, United could well have been in a pack of clubs disputing the way in which the season should be decided.

And of course, we are now in a dispute as to how the season should be ended, due to Hearts and their court action. It’s a measure of the person that the head coach at our club should jump ships so quickly to the vessel trying to sink us, a depressing lack of the devotion he preached to Scott Banks early in the season. He’s also encouraged the man who secured another notch on his CV, Lawrence Shankland, to stay and prove himself at the top level in Scotland, while showing no enthusiasm for doing the same himself.

There’s very little dedication in football nowadays, but  I’m sure we can do better.

Re: Hearts want Neilson

Not a great loss and imo should have been away a year ago. I also think and said previously that come October if the premier we would have been looking for a new manager. We now have been given 100k for him which is a dream.

Its a strange one from Hearts as Budge etc will know there was alot of bad feeling towards him from quite alot of hearts fans.

Where have you see that its 100k mate? Or are you just going on the fact they re saying its 6 figure? I'd hoped it might be a bit more than that but it was a buyout clause so nothing we could have done.

Apologies i nent to add in rumoured 100k. That is the figure being thrown about.

Re: Hearts want Neilson

Like a lot of poster I am more annoyed about the manner of him leaving and who he is leaving for than him going.

There were games where i was incredibly frustrated as I felt the team had so much more to offer and also where some of the signings were shoehorned in to the team even though the balance of the team looked better without them - just my view.  On that basis no great loss and agree with Ogren, no one is bigger than the club and if you want to go then go.

Re: Hearts want Neilson

Pressley & Levein on the BBC podcast, in short.

-Pressley says Neilson wanted out since around Xmas
-Levein says Neilson stated to him in November last year that he had unfinished business at Hearts
-Pressley says United finances are a worry
-Pressley rules out managing us.
-Levein open to the idea of managing us again but would have to look into 'great detail' the stucuture and finanaces.
-Pressley says Neilson didn't like the structure at the club & never had direct access to Ogren
-No main issues with Tony Ashgar

Exactly: if Pressley is so close a friend and confidant of Neilson, he wouldn't come out with any of that nonsense. He's trying to sound informed and knowledgeable, but gives himself away with the fabricated detail.
