I think there are ways and means and i don't understand why Robbie has changed. He has never talked about other players so openly before.
Again, I think the fact we made an offer previously needs to be taken into account here. All Robbie has said is that we are still interested, big fuss about nothing imo.

Agree. All he has said is that he is on our list of people we are looking at. Hardly an exclusive.
If Lennon/Gerrard came out and did what Robbie did for one of our players I would just expect the club to respond the same way Dunfermline have. Doesnt make it wrong. It's only football. Tapping up, on the other hand, is of course wrong. Saying 'we want to sign this player' is not wrong in my eyes.

If United fail to meet Dunfermline's valuation and Nisbet puts in a transfer request - based on the fact that he knows United are interested by reading what they have said to the media - then Dunfermline would have a case to put to the authorities that they were pressured to sell because of this.
This could lead to a fine or potential points deduction for United.
Whether we are interested in the player or not should not really be a matter of public knowledge.
Did you miss the bit about us putting in an offer in January? Our interest is clear and has been known about for months, this is nothing like tapping up. Talk of fines and points deduction over this is absolute nonsense.

Jeez! You're a dramatic kind of guy aren't you?
We can't sign anyone until the transfer window opens, so there's that.
Just not really getting the point here are you? What Robbie has said to the press is that we previously had an offer turned down but we are still interested in the player, how on earth does that turn into tapping the player up? Complete nonsense I'm afraid. Newspapers are full of transfer rumours and speculation and quotes and miss quotes, are you new to football?

Neilson wasn't misquoted, though. Nor was it a rumour. He stated, unequivocally, to a national news outlet that he was interested in signing a player currently contracted to another team. That's considered tapping up and to argue otherwise would be an insult to common knowledge.
I'm aware that the transfer window isn't open yet but that doesn't mean the club should be talking about signing Nisbet. Wait until the window opens and then do your business - there's no need in going to the papers beforehand.
Hahaha seriously? State of me? You're the one with your knickers in a twist about a complete non story.
Once again I'll spell it out, we made an offer for the player in January which means we have clearly stated our interest in the player with a concrete offer of cash! A few months later, after football has been in deep freeze due to the coronavirus, a reporter asks Robbie if he's still interested in the player and he says yeah obviously (or words to this effect) that is hardly tapping a player up now is it? If you think it is then I ask again, are you new to football?

Yeah that's one way out I guess 👍

Anyway back to rumours.
We've been 'officially' linked with 6 players in the papers so far this year:
Stephen O'Donnell
Stuart Findlay
Jonny Hayes
Drey Wright
Ilmari Niskanen
Kevin Nisbet
Have I missed any?

hahaha of course!
I wonder, in the 5 years since he left the club - has there ever once been an article suggesting there was any real interest from us to bring him back?

I'd guess at no, I loved him playing for us first time around and his goal against Sevco lives long in the memory. But he fell away once he lost his support network and we were very lucky to get the money we did for him. Still love the fella but his time has been and gone I'm afraid.

Very honest from him - wanted to leave in January and is ready for the Premiership. A bit of a 'come and get me'.
Let's do it, United. Hibs have already put their business on hold until they are back training. We need to steal a march on them. If we end up spending a little bit more than planned, so be it.
The video below is from his time at Raith Rovers. Now I know this is league 1 but have a watch and look at some of his finishes. He is absolutely clinical. A strong runner with the ball too and able to take players on. He seems to have everything you'd want in a striker. Him and Shankland would be amazing for us. Dare I say it, he (potentially) is more of the 'full package' striker than Shankland is, even if he doesnt have Shankland's predatory instincts.
From what I read it sounds like he would prefer Hibs.
The article also starts by saying the transfer window is open. Is it?

I see what you mean about the Hibs connection but I think it will be because there was a few days of rumours before the Hibs bid whereas United came in at the last minute with a bid and it was rejected. I am fairly confident he'd be happy at either club.
I've not seen anything official about the transfer window and Neilson has been vocal in saying that we cant do anything until we know when the window is open so I'm not so sure if its correct saying its open.

I think the transfer window opened on Tuesday in Scotland. That didn't stop another Scottish club saying they'd signed a player a few days before this right enough.
Also think if we have been quoted correctly in the press regarding interest for contracted players at other clubs, then we have acted in an unsporting manner.

As I've said already, I just don't see it the same way. Every man and his dog knows already that United are after Nisbet or we wouldn't have put an offer in for him in January. Just not getting the big deal made of this at all, both clubs knew already we are after him, the player knew already, the fans knew and obviously the press knew. Robbie tells the press yeah we are still interested and their chairman is up in arms( he is a whingeing prick to start with) and people are talking on here about fines and points deductions. Absolute nonsense in my book. I respect others opinions of course, but that's my take on it.

I find myself agreeing with Arabdownsouth here. Tapping up involves some sort of behind the scenes effort to contact the player without permission. I have to assume that we haven't contacted the player here. What has been played out in the press, whilst potentially mildly unsavoury, is not tapping up. As Tobias himself says it has to be some sort of attempt to persuade a player and I don't think saying he is someone we are interested in to the press is anything like persuasion. I'm sure lots of managers have said they'd like Messi in their team to the press - its not tapping him up. If you got fines and points deductions for this then there would be very few teams with any cash and you'd win leagues with very few points. The Dunfy chairman is also playing the game here - he's off trying to place his fish in water with bigger anglers. All that said, I can't really see why boys are falling out about it - love to see you guys watching Question Time...

Yeah it probably would get messy on QT 😂
In all seriousness though, not falling out with anyone, just not seeing what all the fuss was about. You probably put it better than me though 😉👍

I don't think we have tapped up anyone either but would rather we didn't copy the behaviour of the ugly sisters.
Two years ago though on the last week before Season ticket renewals we would have had a much more cynical view on being linked with Hayes and Nibet. Shows how far the club has moved on from the snake.

I think I’m still conditioned to the Thompson way, cause that was exactly my first thought when I saw we were linked with Nisbet and Hayes

Nesbitt - we need to get it done. Raith goals (tbf Youtube) look great, strong on the ba' , takes on a defence, disnae miss sitters, good at penalties, looks pretty predatory tae me.
We know that us & Hibs are interested - we'd be rash to think that was a'.
Do we have we an offer on the table now ? If so offer another 75k + King, Cammy Smith, mebbe one ae the young laddies on loan (no Glass) if no offer $150k less than what we did in January + King etc.
As for Pars Chairman grizzling - fair enough but it's a' wind

No offer made yet as far as we know mate. Player swaps/loans etc will be impossible at this time because the Championship doesnt start until mid-October at the earliest. No player in their right mind is going to agree to move to Dunfermline to then sit on their arse for another couple of months before they can start training again with no games until October.

What if we have no chance of signing nisbit and Hayes?
What if thats a decoy to get others to lower their price?
The Finnish boys value appears to have gone up and up since our interest was leaked to the press by his club.
On the books currently, we have Pawlett and mcmullan who can both play out there - do we need 4 wingers- or mores, can we afford 4 wingers? Maybe the interest in Hayes is to show the Finnish club that we have other options and not to try to get too much cash from us?
Equally, what if nisbit is not our real target?
Not saying they are or are not- just looking at options to explain comments which are out of character.

Tangy, thats a lot of questions mate
On the books we also have Appere, Chalmers, Clark that can all play 'out wide' but I'd say McMullan is the only natural winger at the club and even then, he is sometimes better through the middle.
This Niskanen boy seems the real deal in terms of being a Conway-type winger that we've been crying out for for years. Someone who is very two-footed, can take a goal and deliver a good cross. Seems to tick a lot of boxes, hence why we are in for him.
I think going by what Robbie has said so far, it will be 1 winger, 1 striker, 1 centre back (at first) and then it will depend on budget etc.
Edit to add: Also we've already bid for Nisbet in Jan so very likely that we ARE in for him.

If I had to choose I'd rather see us sign a winger first because it could free up Appere to play up front as a striker alongside Shankland as a different option from Clark. Appere can run in behind and has a great physique for a striker (although he needs to get better in the air). IMHO he's wasted out wide, he's hard working and had sone decent games there but is a bit of a one trick pony out there ie cut inside on his right foot and try to cross it. A decent full back will deal with that in the Premiership by just either getting tight or showing him outside on his weaker left foot. When he plays up top he does tend to pull wide but the good thing about when he does that is he becomes an extra man and gets the space he needs to get balls in or, he drags defenders out of position creating space for midfield runners or Shanks. The ICT game first day of last season is the perfect example.
