I would hazard a guess at.
Osman Sow (released)
Troy Brown (released)
Cammy Smith (loan)
Matty Smith (released)
Adam King (loan)
Logan Chalmers (loan)
I expect 2 or 3 signings inbound.

We definitely need someone in the butcher mould and a creative midfielder, a good winger would also be a bonus.

See Sow and Smith (M), they cannae just be released, can they? They've got contracts until May 2020.
For what it's worth, if we had to pay up Sow's full contract, I'd keep him on just in case there's an opportunity for him to be used. Troy Brown probably won't get a renewal, better to use the cash elsewhere as we have cover in that area.
You'd think Cammy Smith, King and Chalmers would benefit from getting games at other clubs. King's signing, on such a contract, still mystifies me.
Maybe Sam Wardrop, who should be back to a level of fitness in January, would also be helped by a loan, but I worry that if Liam Smith isn't available for right back for whatever reason (eg getting shunted to left back), we'd see Paul Watson put back in there: so I'd be keeping Wardrop as cover.

I’d have had Stanton on that list until a few weeks ago.

I would say Sow will be released
Matty Smith will go out on loan and be released when his contract expires
Logan Chalmers will go on loan
what will happen with Scott Banks if an offer comes in?

Forgot all about Banks.
Yeah, you have to think he'll be away in January too.

Would anyone else prefer to see Troy Brown stay rather than Connelly?
I have been far more impressed with Brown, more composed, better in the air and also a good organiser.

If i'm honest, yes.
I just don't rate Connolly. The defence has been noticeably improved with him nowhere near it.
Can't see him being punted though. Whereas Brown might want back down South if he's out the picture at Utd.

Short memories.
People were SCREAMING out for Connolly to return quickly when Brown was in the side and we were losing to Alloa, QotS and Ayr.
All of the names mentioned are on the chopping block either temporarily or permanently.
We should use this window similarly to how we used last years, by bringing boys in with a view to next season. If Neilson has players in mind for the Premiership, try and get them in now, bed them in now, so that we’re ready to hit the ground running come next season. This is a massive reason behind our 13-point lead at the top this season.

The main reason for those defeats imo was definitely not the missing Connelly, Robson missing and subsequently playing most of the back line out of position was the main reason.
At the Ayr game Brown actually played not bad.

I wasn't shouting for Connolly's return.
Smith being at LB in the absence of Robson and Watson at RB was the real problem.
Again, i just don't really rate Connolly. But that's all 'by the by' anyway, as i very much doubt he will be going anywhere.

If you look at the stats we lost FAR more goals with Brown in the team than we did with Connolly. I'd say Brown may go.
Offline
Sow - should go, he'll be kept until the last minute to see who we can bring in.
Cammy Smith - should go, waste of a wage, not a slur on the boy himself more of United going about their business in January like a bairn in a sweetie shop with a credit card.
Matty Smith - stay out on loan then punted at the end of the season.
Chalmers - out on loan (swap for Glass)
Brown - contract not renewed.

Cannot see King leaving on loan unless we get quality cover in and I cannot see us getting cover in to cover 'cover'.
I've never rated Connolly, as said the problems with letting in goals when he was out was more down to a centre half playing right back and a right back playing left back.

Again though, if Connolly had been part of a team with no Robson, Smith LB and Watson RB he would have fared similiarly. Or the team would have fared similiarly i should say.
Brown wasn't even bad at Ayr. In fact he was one of our best players.

Think I’ve only seen Brown play once but as it’s Connolly that has been getting on as a sub recently I reckon Brown will go.

Brown is out of contract in January and Connolly isn’t. Would be mental to keep Brown.

Greg Docherty at Rangers has been told he can leave, he’d be a big improvement on what we have in the midfield currently. And at 23, the carrot of winning a big move down south is still there, earning us and himself a bit of coin.

Re the debate of Brown v Connolly. They both have good attributes. Brown is really good in the air but from what I have seen of him, particularity in the Ayr and Alloa away games, I thought his distribution was very poor. Connoly also good in the air and has a bit more pace and aggression about him. Again, distribution not the best at times.
Given Brown is only under contract until Jan and we have Watson, Connolly, Reynolds and Butcher, he'll be the one to move on.
Really frustrated with Cammy Smith - not with him but that he's never had a run of games in his best position, think he could be a very good asset in this league.

Very much agree with this, adding Brown stood off players far too much at Dumfries as well. Cammy Smith has been a victim of United, and not just under Robbie, bringing in far too many players who favour that particular position.

Excellent shout. More progressive than what we have in midfield currently and behind the three playing at the moment we haven’t got many other options.
As for Cammy Smith, he doesn’t have enough identifiable qualities to suggest he deserves another start. He’s been poor whenever he’s played out wide and going back to one up front with a ‘10’ is the last thing we should be doing.

Exactly, we have enough cover now for centre backs. The money saved could be better utilised elsewhere.

I just don't see what others seemingly seem to think Cammy Smith possesses (or could possess), Slateford
Fact is he has played under 2 different Utd Managers now.
And failed to break into 2 different Utd sides in the Championship. He has also (imo) not shown nearly enough when brought off the bench in games.
I'd be more than ok with him going next month if we get another midfielder in.

I see stanton and watson are the next to be offered new contracts - surprised as if we are looking to go up, then I'm not sure they would be any more than back ups.
Not a dig at them as such but stanton has serious fitness/health issues and watson is limited. I'd imagined if we go up, we'd be looking to improve the overall quality of the squad to compete...

Watson has been excellent lately. He has been played as a right back most of his time with united and this is probably his longest run in his preferred position. Besides that, have they even been offered new contracts or was it not just a lazy piece of journalism?
