Shankland

Today's Daily Record reporting that both Rangers and Celtic have scouted Shankland.

I don't doubt this and don't think they will be the only clubs scouting him at the minute.
This topic was touched on in another thread on here yesterday.

Re: Shankland

Couldn't see why either would need him. Would he play before Morelos or Defoe? Couldn't see it. He'd be on the bench at Celtic too. Saying that, wouldn't be the first time they've bought a young Scottish player and ruined him by hardly playing him.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Re: Shankland

He's going to draw attention, that's the downside to his sensational scoring form. He's on a three year deal though and our owners are neither skint nor snake like. However if I was them I'd be getting him in and doubling his weekly salary in exchange for ramping up his release clause to make whoever comes in pay stupid money for him or close the door on the way out.

Re: Shankland

I've heard he's on a tight (well constructed) contract but with the Ogrens rather than the Club.
The Club couldn't 'afford' him.
It's our owners who have 'invested' in him and so far they must be rather chuffed with their investment.
Not sure if this helps us or not, probably does.

Comes to mind tho that he was scoring at the same rate for the wee United this time last season and there was 'interest' but came to nothing.
If anything is it only the likes of an English (C'ship?) club that could afford him/benefit from having him?

The Ogrens pretty much are the club tbh, although I get what you mean. I'd still be wanting a very hefty release clause which would be worth improving his contract further if necessary. I can't remember a goalscorer like him at the club, I have no fear he would be able to score regularly at premiership level either.

Re: Shankland

He's the same player he was at Ayr where he was scoring goals for fun with 'lesser' players around him.  He needs to play at the top level, absolutely, but he also needs to see out at least a season with us and I don't doubt that will happen.  If we are promoted then he's got a choice to make, but keep playing like he is and his days in tangerine will rightly be numbered.

Re: Shankland

Regarding the Daily Record stuff, reckon it's just another puff piece so that a player/club can be linked to the all important Glasgow twins. If either wanted him, they could have got him for no fee a few moths ago.

To Lawrence Shankland himself: he's surprised me as he is a far better all round player than I thought he ever was. I'm sure many Ayr fans said that last season too, but I was dismissive of their opinions.

Mate, it's Scott Burns who tweeted the story.

He is normally spot-on regards all things Utd.

Sadly.

He’s mates with Tony Asghar, and is usually the one our Sporting Director uses to leak stories to the press.

He’s scoring an average of almost two goals a game, it would be negligent of the twa cheeks not to have somebody watching him.

He’ll not be away in January, the people in charge know he’s too valuable to our promotion chances for a quick cash grab. I don’t think he’ll be here in a year’s time though.

Re: Shankland

I’ll be amazed if only 2 clubs are ‘watching’ him.

But including those 2 sells the story

BBC Scotland Sport speculating about Laurence being included in Steve Clarke's squad tomorrow for the dead games v Russia & San Marino....

Re: Shankland

Hope so be a great achievement for the laddie and can only be good for us, seeing if u perform for us u can get a call up! Also puts a few zeros on end of his price tag

I could see Steve Clarke sticking him in the squad and playing him. How he'd do against Russia is hard to know but San Marino's players are of a lesser standard than he's used to scoring shitloads against.

Re: Shankland

I'll be interested in the squad announcement this morning.
If Laurence is in it'll at least be a player I've heard of.

I dont. I would rather he was left out just now of the national squad just now and continues to play for us only with out risking an injury away with Scotland.

Re: Shankland

Away from Scotland selection conjecture just now, I've just watched his 3rd goal on Saturday again.
He gets the ball wide left exactly on the half way line and less than 10 seconds later it's in the onion bag.
Yeah the goalie maybe should have guarded his near post better but did you see the way he skipped past their right back before shooting from the narrow angle.
He's some player the boy. Everything he touches turns to goals.

I concur.

But it may have positives, and I'm sure LS himself is delighted, as will be the Ogrens.

Hope he steers clear of injuries.

Re: Shankland

Delighted for the boy.

Very well deserved and a real honour for him and a credit to Utd for supplying Scotland with a No.9 whilst we are in the Championship.

I will be buzzing for him if he can get goals in these games.

Will, like everyone else, be anxious he comes back fully uninjured.

Re: Shankland

Fantastic for the lad.  There are clearly several risks for United here, but players getting international honours can only be good for us in the long run.  If nothing else, it shows other players that you can come to us and still get a call up.
Also, he deserves it.

Re: Shankland

I see where you are coming from but let's think long-term. He'll be chuffed to bits, other players will see Utd as a place to come to, a boost too for the squad and staff....and the fans! Maybe Johnny Russell and Shankland up front! Increases his confidence, increases his value.

This can only be good for us as long as he doesn't get injured.  But he can come a cropper making himself a cup of tea - so chill and be happy!
