The game at our level is all about recruitment.
This is true and it is also what gives me the most fear about our current regime. Fuchs has been the exception to the rule. He is the one that I thought they had got it right with and that we would sell him on for £2/3M. Maybe they will but I don't see them being as lucky again on the recruitment front. Shanks was a no brainer recruitment, but we have only realised a very small return on him due to the mess the club was in last year.
When are we going to learn from the likes of St Johnstone how to manage our club with any level of financial astuteness?

The ball was never in United's court with Fuchs. He's a Cameroon international that was playing in Spain. We've done exceptionally well securing him to battle against relegation last year. The player himself will be viewing this as a stepping stone and if there are complex or unfavourable contractual clauses, that would have been the hurdle we needed to overcome to even strengthen last year.
On the running of the club, when you get 2 managerial appointments in a row correct, good things happen (Levein > Houston). Football is cyclical and St Johnstone will fall away like everyone else does when they fail to get recruitment right after one or two CH's are sold, McCann goes and Davidson himself goes. There's no secret. Their fans were desperate for Steve Brown to sell because he's got famously tight purse strings. We're still trying to sort our selves out from 4 years in the championship, speculating to accumulate and then being hit with a pandemic that destroyed income for 2 years.

Can't disagree with any of that to be fair, other than I think St J have done exceptionally well over the last dozen years culminating in three cup wins and I think that they are pretty well shaped to continue as a Prem team for the foreseeable. Some going for a club that gets 2,500 home fans. It doesn't make our mismanagement any easier knowing that the Perth bunch might be stuck with mid-table mediocrity whilst we conspire for another stint in the league of fun.

Anyone worth anything is available.
Replacing Fuchs in our system will be a massive task.

I heard about 3 months ago Fuchs would be sold.
So far everything i've heard from around that time has came to fruitition i.e. (Mellon back to Tranmere, Courts appointed, Asghar Jr promoted, Shankland sold etc).
So, i have no doubts at all that Fuchs, Kerr Smith and Siegrist are all away this window, as was the talk as far back as about late April/early May.
Anything else we should know?
Nothing i've said above is anything revelatory.
A good section of the support were discussing it as far back as late Spring.
It was all 'rumours' at the time, of course. But all the big talking points have came to fruition. So no surprise to hear this news today.
Fwiw i think replacing Fuchs is an easier task than replacing Shankland. But we'll see.

Worrying times unless we've got ready replacements lined up. Presumably Robson will be off too. The apparent turnaround on Kerr Smith is probably the most concerning. It's not that long ago that the club were heralding him signing to stay with us despite interest from down south and now, if the rumours are true, (which as Tek says seems to be more and more the case) we are now looking to sell him against his will. Sounds like Ogren has put his foot down and Tony is desperately trying to sell anything that will earn a fast buck.

If there's a 40% sell-on clause for Fuchs, surely to God we wouldn't sell him for anything less than 7 figures? Making half a million on him won't keep the wolves from the door for long, and only a part of that sum would likely be reinvested in the playing side.
Anyone else wondering if the Ogrens have now seen the financial reality of owning a footie club and have got cold feet? Recoup their losses and get out?
Kind of looks that way. If McNulty ends up at Tranmere get re-arranging your deck chair. We clearly needed boys out the door before we got any in. Makes giving boys like Pawlett long term contracts highly questionable.

Uncharitable to speculate that the Ogrens are instigating a fire sale.
I get the impression they are very honourable men.
Yes, they were desperately unlucky at buying our Club at the wrongest of times but I have faith that they're here for the longer term & will go down as heavily respected owners, incredibly with a return on their investment, but with Dundee United FC forever etched on their hearts.
Unlike some of these clowns they've had over the road.

Am i right in thinking that the last player we actually paid money for was Charlie Telfer ?

We paid Celtic a fee for McMullan.

I seriously doubt we’d be paying McNulty’s wages if MO was “starting the fire sale”, “got cold feet” or are looking to “get out”.

Agreed - that's why I suggested organising your deck chair if he ends up at Tranmere.

See Sam Cosgrove has went out to Shrewsbury on loan. Would have been a cracking loan.
Anybody know if mcnulty is a loan or termination of contract?
I get the feeling that we're so desperate for signings that if Alex Nicholls walked thro the door we'd be rejoicing.
Or Mydinga Lyng (who btw was actually a Danish U/21 cap).
But a word of caution - that's the sort of thing that can happen when you are desperate for signings....

not sure if that was meant directly for me or a general point.... Cosgrove had some record at the Dons and is an absolute unit. As for McNulty - heir apparent to the No 9 shirt (I know Shanks didn't wear No 9), I'm a bit MEH about it. Will probably do a job up top in his favoured position but doubt he will set the heather alight either.
As a rundown and ignoring manager/youth departures.... we are currently at:
Out Shankland, McMullan, Deniz, King, Powers (Loans: McNulty, Doohan, Bolton)
In Carson, Mulgrew

Out of the 5 above who have left, 4 weren't good enough, that's good business......

No. Good business would have been not to have brought them to Tannadice in the first place.

Looking at McNulty's track record, when he's good he's great but there are times when it doesn't work out. Would be good to know from a Livi and Coventry point of view what helped him succeed.
Last year, when he was good, his ability to get past defenders and get a shot away was impressive. The goals were really well taken which gave the impression of quality. However, i also recall countless times where poor passing and basic hold-up play really let him down. Will need to get the ball to him in early, in the right areas and with a bit of quality - basically everything that was lacking with Shankland's service then!
I think McNulty is more to feet in and around the box where Shankland wants one touch n the box. We may find this easier to accommodate.

McNulty is in his last year on his Reading contract so does need to have a good season to ensure getting a gig the following season. Not sure that he'll be any less prolific than Shankland last season and without a creative midfielder I think he'll be doing very well to get to double figures.
At this stage I reckon McNulty could be as good as it gets & I would predict a 15-goal season for him.
(Sorry to raise it but is his betting misdemeanour gone yet?)
And also, has anyone here seen Appere?

We need 3 attacking players in immediately.

Looks like another week goes by that our team has not been strengthened. There is a certain inevitability about us.
