Seen a few folk mention it, not only here but across other sites: surely Robbie didn't go with Shankland up top himself today? If so, I shouldn't be surprised, some managers, including Robbie, brood over their team choices too much when they should go with the obvious.

It was McMullan right, Pawlett centre, Appere left in a 3 behind Shankland. And it didn’t ever look like working.

Thank you The Shed.

Teams will always get a result like we did at Ayr, these things happen. So, while that was a discouraging scoreline, the bigger disappointment is Robbie changing a system which had produced results.

Also when you consider how many times 4-2-3-1 was ineffective last season and Robbie stuck with it.

Hope it has the right effect and made the team realise there is a long way to go to win this league

1-2 to us, close game but we just edge it

Dundee United » Appere » 31/8/2019 6:50 pm

He is that big bullying striker we have been needing for some time - rough round the edges maybe, but I ma impressed by his start and hopefully he can carry it on

Dundee United » Neilson » 27/8/2019 12:28 pm

Feel its more a reaction to some of the managers in the league above being under pressure and making sure all teams are put off approaching us for him.

Sorry lads but by the sounds of things we wont be getting many more after Frear, if any.

Over four weeks until the transfer window closes, I'm certain there will be further additions (and a few leaving).

And no doubt there will be some loan signings offered once the season kicks off

The thing is, if he was seen to be trying different formations and was a bit more positive in his approach to improve our performance levels and the results then he would be offered some serious slack from the fans, but his problem is that he keeps trying the same negative tactics over and over again.  Also, I think the the fact that he lines up the same way regardless of who we are playing doesn't endear him that much to the fans

In saying that, if he tried too many different tactics, he might be labelled as not knowing what he was doing, so there would have to be a happy medium in there.

I agree with you on the tactics it is one of my biggest frustrations in the last number of years that we seem to stick to the same tactics and nothing evolves or changes based on how we feel we can exploit the oppositions weaknesses.

I think some of the signings are positive and while i am not overly enthused by them I am optimistic we are signing more selectively over the January scatter gun approach where only a few added to the team.  Also optimistic about Appere he seems to be a reasonably physical striker that can impose on defenses, early days yet for him but what we have been crying out for in recent seasons

Dundee United » Is that our worst ever result? » 24/7/2019 1:53 pm

Hoping this will be the wake up call that some of the management team need to review structure and tactics and maybe we will see a different team for the first league match.

but not convinced we will, we seem to have a recent history of manager who had absolute belief in the way they wanted to play, with players they had selected and when it is clearly not working they are too stubborn to admit it needed tweaking

There doesn’t seem to be any sort of cohesive plan other than hopefully having 11 players that are better than the oppostion’s, and hoping their quality sees them though. That’s not enough IMO, and if we do end up winning the league, it’ll be down to the poor standard of the league rather than anything we’ve done. Meanwhile these stupid results to the Alloas and the Arbroaths and the Mortons on the league will keep happening.

It has been the same for as long as we have been in this division, sideways slow build up that allows the opposition time to get all the players behind the ball and we struggle to break them down.

Teams are working out how we play as we never seem to change tactics or approach, two weeks ago we draw with East Fife they work out our structure and then come to Tannadice and beat us, it may have been an exceptional performance from them but did they work out our tactics and build from there?

disappointed there was no creative social media reveal, like some club officials waving a taxi off as it drives up Tannadice Street!!

I hope so, i share a lot of posters views that we can't play the same tactics with one up front given our current squad.

Seriously. What a lot of shite.

Just in the last few days i've seen players from England sign for Celtic, Dundee, Hibs, Hamilton, Sevco, Motherwell, Inverness, Livi etc etc.

Makes it sound like we are talking to players who want to see what they get offered in England before making a decision!!

Dundee United » Summer signings/rumours » 01/7/2019 11:42 am

Is some of our inactivity down to us maybe looking at moving some players on before signing any new players, thinking Barton, Rabitsch, Aird, Lloemba - some of whom were signed on longer deals last season.

I hope not an it is down to us being better a keeping our business in house while getting the deals across the line!

I don’t get the Connolly hatred to be honest.

I know he didn’t play well in either leg there, no one did. But it’s like we round on one player then move on to the next one.

Hardly 'hatred'.

I just don't think he's very good.

But he's not the only one who has been poor. Pawlett, Sow etc have all received criticism for their perfomance levels too.

Can't expect players to be free of criticism tbqh after 2 Play-Off Final performnces as poor as that back to back.

If anything i think our supporters have taken the whole thing quite well.

I agree, i think he was good against weaker opposition but has been exposed a bit against stronger opponents and had we gone up would have moved down the pecking order or been a liability

In my opinion the jury is out on some of the January signing and expect a better performance this summer,

Yeah he was backed in January but easier said than done from there on, January window always difficult bc the players who are available are available cos theyre not good enough for clubs theyre at. We were so bad we HAD to make a splash but not easy to knit together the side from there.

He deserves another go next season. Needs to get his business done early in the summer no excuses now.

While with my rational head on I probably agree, I do think he’s made a massive balls up today and not for the first time.

Not every signing is going to be a success and some don’t work out for different reasons but multiple of his signings have been categoric failures and he has to take a lot of the blame.

Defeats like the 5-0 to Ayr at home shouldn’t be accept, regardless of the squad he inherited, and lots of those players are still being played.

Whilst I think he deserves the start of the season, the pressure is on from the get out and I’m not sure he can handle the heat.

But I’m still on the bev to try to forget this afternoon and I’m sure most of that reads like gibberish, apologies.

Agree with you on today, hard viewing. Encapsulated by our lack of direction after going a man up. Rudderless there.

Still raw and sure everyone else is but I just want RN to answer why when he makes a substitution is it never a straight swap for a player not doing it to on he hope will, seems every attacking subbie involves 3 players moving to a new position and we seem to lose shape an structure - happened so many times and was same under previous managers!

falls in to the category what does the manager see in him that we are all clearly missing

Subs - Laidlaw, Booth,Bouhenna,
M.Smith,Nesbitt, Fyvie,Gomis

I think it will be that line-up again.

Sow, Stanton and Cammy Smith replacing Fyvie,Gomis and Nesbitt on the bench.

couldn't argue if we went with that team, Sow can have impact of the bench
