I think we're all braced for a sore one on Wednesday night.

Rangers have nothing to play for but pride, but can play without pressure, and i'm sure will be looking forward to making us suffer.

We meanwhile seem finished, both physically and mentally.

What XI and formation gives us the best chance at damage limitation if nothing else? (the goal difference taking a battering would all but end our chance for 4th even if we somehow beat Aberdeen).

Would you play our strongest XI or bring a few in from the cold and rest a few for Aberdeen match?

Illustrated here is just how disastrous our transfer dealings were in January.

1st February.

United sit 3rd
St.Mirren 9th

We should have strengthened the side strongly and went all in for our best finish in 15 years.

Instead it's absolutely killed us.

Do you know what is starting to piss me off a bit? The 'fatigue' excuse.

No club in Scottish Football has had more free weekends than United since the New Year.

I defended Goodwin and the players last week because we were up against it away to arguably the 2nd best team in the country.

No such excuses today. That was pitiful.

Out-fought, out played and bullied tbh. Didn't see much of a fight put up by anyone in a tangerine shirt.

They looked like a team who have collectively clocked out for the season. Really poor stuff.

Ibrox could be a right sore one if they smell blood and realise we are a wounded animal.

All teams he's lost to in the Cup in the past 2 years or so.

Probably best to leave it there, i fear we'll never quite agree when it comes to Jim Goodwin, and i don't want to derail what is the biggest match thread of the season.

Goodwin has done well to get us to where we are from where we were.  That is a fact.  Whether he will be given the wherewithal or has the ability to take us to the next stage (or even keep us where we are) are questions that nobody can confidently answer.  The reality though is changing managers now is just as risky (given our pull) as keeping him.  For me stability trumps twisting.  Goodwin can't rest on his laurels given he knows he has to rebuild again - he'll rightly be judged (soon enough) on whether he can.

We should look at David Gray at Hibs.  They've stuck with him and their (much) superior squad has eventually come good.  Is that down to Gray as a master tactician?  Probably not.  The reality is that track record in Scottish football management (bar Rodgers) is McInnes, Robinson and, whether you like it or not, Goodwin.  Tony Docherty maybe but he's just failed the test that Goodwin has next season in terms of consolidating a top 6 finish.  Careful what you wish for.

Finn, I'm not advocating for him to be sacked. Despite my reservations regards him, he has achieved our targets the past two seasons.

You are quite correct in that he will be strongly judged on this Summer's recruitment.

It's a chance to improve us. It's massive.

I'd be delighted with that. Better than every winger we have at the club.

He's went a bit stale at Kilmarnock and needs a fresh challenge. Very good player imo.

A cautious one.

I meant we would see what he was made of in relation to the injury crisis in defence, because it might force him to employ a tactic that doesn't come naturally to him i.e. attack.

That's unfair imo, he built a squad to get out of the championship, which he done at the 1st attempt.

Most of the squad he assembled to fight for three points at Greenock on a wet Tuesday night are still here.

He shipped out 15 players this season overhauling the playing squad to keep us up, which he has done with ease.

The tines this season, where he has asked some of the guys to play attacking football, we have been found well short of the required level.

There have been multiple times this season he has been far too attacking and it cost us points-

Rangers at home, Dundee at home, Hearts and Hibs at home, Aberdeen away second time (went for 3 when he we could easily had 1).

There's lots more to it but it's lazy to just brandish him defensive without looking at all of the circumstances he has inherited.

Next season will be the first time imo we will have a chance to evaluate him in terms of style of play, but again, I just want to see us win.

Just need to look up the road for all the evidence you need.

Most of what you wrote above is true, but that doesn't take away that he is an inherently cautious and defensively minded Manager, that isn't so much a criticism as a statement of fact.

And that also doesn't mean that his team won't at times win, we have done so plenty of times this season alone.

But that also doesn't take away from the fact that in games of football where we need to 'have a go' and win the match on the day, we invariably struggle.

His record in the Cups is evidence to that.

Frustratingly, no we can't.

They would need to have been recalled before some cut-off point in March.

Thankfully that rule is getting scrapped next season, meaning if we need to play youngsters at this time of the season we will be able too.

Not that it helps us in the here and now.

These next three games will tell you a lot about Jim Goodwin.

I mean I think I already know what type of Manager he is, but this type of injury crisis is where really good Manager's prove themselves to be just that.

Either tactically or in terms of motivating the players. Or both.

Lewis O'Donnell was a late substitute for QotS who drew 0-0 at home to Cove Rangers in the Semi Final 1st leg, to make it all to play for in Saturday's 2nd Leg.

Wtf?

The boy was a great player in a great side, that played football the right way. Also, one of only three players in our history to have scored twice in a Cup Final, and the only one to have done so at Hampden.

That's a strange old dig, Finn.

Fletcher is significantly less mobile than Dalby, Paton and Jort. Doesn't score many,

Haha, only took you 30 minutes.

Nonsensical argument, obviously.

Flethcher has 8 goals this season and 1 assist, at a comparable level to the Scottish Premiership. The vast majority of his appearances from the bench.

Paton and VDS have 0 goals, 0 assists.

Who cares if he's less mobile (don't even think he is btw).

His goal ratio at Wrexham is superiors to Dalby's also. Fletcher 16 goals in 77, Dalby 13 in 88.

Despite Fletcher playing at a league above for a year.

He'd be a good (squad) signing alongside younger, pacier, up and coming forwards.

I think you know that deep down, but you'd never bring yourself to agree with me, of course.

Gonna throw this one out there.

Steven Fletcher.

Out of contract at Wrexham on June 30th. They will now spend millions, he will be released.

Yes, he's 38 but he seems still very fit. Just scored 8 goals in English League One, 1 assist. Started only a few games, but made 40 appearances all in. So, obviously been fit all season.

Wouldn't be offering him the wage he was on previously, obviously, but i think he'd still do a job, either from the bench or starting.

We are losing a whole load of experienced players. Be good to have someone like him in the dressing room. Experienced, fit, strong, athletic, a presence, a bit of aura, a winner.

And before someone says something like 'he got us relegated'. He was very good in that season, particularly playing in such a poor side. Pretty much the only player who was. One of the best Striker's we've had in recent years.

The play offs from L1 to the Champ don't work like that. It's two 2-legged semi finals (2nd bottom Champ vs 4th Lg 1 and 2nd v 3rd then winners play in the final). The only difference is who gets the home advantage in the 2nd leg.

My mistake.👍🏻
