So, Gents/Ladies, my 'Summertime of Sadness' has finally came to it's natural conclusion and it's time for yet another music competition on Tekel to be consigned to the dustbin of time. Thanks to all who participated/commented, as per.
The 2nd Semi Final of the tournament witnessed victory registered yet again for "Philadelphia" by Neil Young. The melancholic track for the film of the same name will now progress through to The Final. The defeated track (and therefore eliminated) was 'I Know It's Over' by The Smiths.
The Final -
Neil Young - Philadelphia
Released - 1993
Written By - Neil Young
Songs Background - Young wrote this track 'Philadelphia' for the 1993 Jonathan Demme directed film of the same name. Demme originally asked Neil Young to write an opening track to the film. Six weeks later Young sent him over a tape, "We were crying the first time we heard it. I went : 'Oh.my god, Neil Young trusts this movie more than I do' said Demme in an interview regards the song.
The melancholic nature of Young's contribution led Demme to switch the song to the ending of the film, rather than the opening sequence.
V's
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Released - March 2003
Written By - Trent Reznor
Songs Background - The song was originally written in 1994 by Trent Reznor, singer/lyricist with 'The Nine Inch Nails'. The song includes references to self harm and heroin addiction, although the overall meaning of the song is disputed.
Some listeners contend that the song acts as a suicide note written by the song's protagonist, as a result of his depression while other listeners of the track claim that it describes the difficult process of finding a reason to live in spite of depression and pain.
Voting Closes Later Today (Monday 26th August) AT 11PM

Hurt Lyrics -
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear my crown of shit
On my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
Philadelphia Lyrics -
[Chorus]
Sometimes I think that I know
What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right
[Verse 1]
I've got my friends in the world
I had my friends
When we were boys and girls
And the secrets came unfurled
[Verse 2]
City of brotherly love
Place I call home
Don't turn your back on me
I don't want to be alone
Love lasts forever
Someone is talking to me
Calling my name
Tell me I'm not to blame
I won't be ashamed of love
Philadelphia
City of brotherly love
Brotherly love
[Chorus]
Sometimes I think that I know
What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right

Crikey, what a choice to have to make. Two of my favourites but I simply have to go with Cash.
That version of that song could break the heart of a heartless bassa!

Well done again Tek, hats aff to you.
A worthy winner in my humbles, would've voted for him in the final but was off the grid for a few days.
Still think Jimmy Cliff shoulda won it, but all about opinion right enough

Thank you Pat and Mr C for the kind comments.
And voting/commenting, as per.

Broadening my musical knowledge with a bit of fun at the same time. These comps and the Music threads gives this forum the edge on other footy forums. Also interesting to share thoughts with guys who are not all the same age.
Cheers Tek

Have to say Nine Inch Nails original kicks the fuck out of Johnny Cash - all about opinions but its Trents song
