Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

Well we open our league campaign on Saturday at home to Inverness.
Personally i think we are a few signings short but we will see what happens over the coming weeks before the window shuts.
Looks like the only players who are not fit just now are Pawlett and Sow.
I seen some of the Dundee v ICT game on sunday and didnt think either of them played well. Hopefully we can get off to a good start with 3 points
.
I think we may see this team start..

Siegrist
Smith
Connolly
Reynolds
Robson
McMullan
Butcher
Harkes
Chalmers
Clark
Shankland

Would like to see Cammy Smith start and I have the sneakiest of feelings that Robbie might bottle playing one of the young guys and play Robson in front of Sporle.

Re: Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

My team would be going from what neilson has played so far and from what I’ve seen

Benj 100%
Smith Connolly Reynolds robson
Butcher
Mcmullan smith (if he plays this formation has got to go with Cammy)) Stanton frear (hopefully)
Shankland

4141

But id like to see our wingers stay up the pitch and move it to 433, let left and right sided centre mids cover the full backs

I had hoped we would have seen at least 1 new face in before now in the build up to this game.

If we see only see one more signing by the end of the window we will be in trouble this season.

Fumbling about trying to sign a Motherwell fringe player. The banter years just keep rolling on.

I'm not having a go at the lad. I'm having a go at the club. He's been around Tannadice for over a week seemingly and we still haven't signed him. What's the problem? I would also add that despite now having a scouting network in place and months to draw up a list of targets, we appear to be rummaging around looking for free agents or boys out of favour to sign at the last minute which us a bit disappointing. Maybe we've been turned down by a lot of targets, who knows? Also, is he or is he not, a Motherwell fringe player? What's writing him off with that fact?

Hopefully he's decent, Noel Hunt was a fringe player for Dunfermline and was great for us. But, I remember the time when teams like Motherwell used to sign our fringe players, not the other way round. That is the sad reality of where we are at.

An old uni mate of mine is a Motherwell ST holder and gave a me a run down of his thoughts but I won't say what he said because I don't want to write the laddie off.

Re: Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

Motherwell offered him a new deal

Re: Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

It could be that he is looking to see if any other offers are on the table.

Like it or not we are a Championship side and it would be a risk dropping down a division. On the other hand he would probably get a lot more game time than he did at Motherwell.

Re: Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

The starting eleven isn’t my concern, it’s the manner we choose to approach the game.

Play high tempo and on the front foot, and I’ll fancy us to do the job.

Play tentative, sideways passive football, and the game becomes a toss of the coin.

This goes for every league game this season. I’d fancy us against anyone, home or away, if we take the game to them. Equally, I’d fancy anyone to take points off us, home or away, playing Neilsonball.

Re: Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

We have two opponents on Saturday.
Inverness Caley Thistle & the tension from the terracing.
Makes things trickier that it might otherwise be.
Not sure there's a lot we can do about it.
The majority of our 'support' can at best be described as demanding.

This 100%. We've got the players there. We just need to go for it.

Can you say which teams play this 'high tempo/front foot' stuff?
Every team I watch seems to play the sideyways stuff for which we are roundly criticised.
Is it a case of lumping it up the park?
We & everyone else up here are not Manchester City.

Re: Dundee Utd v ICT - 03/08/19

I reckon we will be fine this season, frear (or infact any decent winger) would be welcomed, especially due to pawletts injuries.

Id go

Seigrist

Smith connolly reynolds robson

Butch harkes

Mcmullan clark smith

Shankland.

I would prefer smith through the middle to give him  a chance but not sure how the young ones would hold up against these hammer throwers on saturday.

I absolutely agree, we are not Manchester City. Which makes the continued insistence on passing, passing, passing all the more irritating. Essentially what you’re trying to do is move the opposition out of shape and fashion one on ones in key areas. But to do that you need players capable of passing and moving quickly and accurately. As you say, we most definitely don’t have that.

We badly need to find another way of doing it. Pressing high up the park can get transitions in good positions. It could also be lumping up to a target man like Livi the year before last or ICT at times last season. It could also be playing balls over the top to a speed merchant which stretches the shape of the opposition, like Ayr and QoS.

We don’t have a target man, but we do have McMullan, whose pace we barely make use of. We get him one on one with his marker and play balls into his feet.

I’m no tactical expert by any means but it doesn’t take much to watch other teams at our level and see they have more effective styles of play than ours. And with poorer players.

Agree with you regarding Robbie's use of McMullan.

Many United fans pigeonhole him as a winger who can't cross the ball, simply because that's where Robbie usually plays him. He's not a winger (as his main position), playing his best football through the middle.

But Robbie has not tried him there alongside or behind Shankland this season, according to what I've read and heard. I'd have him in the position the coach thinks Clark is suited too (he isn't).

The problem is, we have a lack of wingers, and usually misuse them when we've get one in anyway over the past few seasons.

In other news, Riku Riski scored in the Champions League last night.

Totally agree Pat. Teams are terrified of McMullan’s pace and we really don’t make anything if it. He’s been miles better any time he’s played through the middle.

I would be quite happy with him drifting out to the flanks to stretch the game but there’s a big difference between that and being stuck out on the wing the entire time, doing very little.

Agree, play him in the middle. When he tires replace with Cammy Smith.
