A lot of talk from Utd fans about Matty Smith being one player who should be surplus to requirements (myself included).
Thing is I remember when he first broke into the first team. I was at his Tannadice debut (3-3 draw v Partick) and he genuinely looked really exciting on the left wing that night. Driving runs, skilful, determined.
It's made me think. What other young Utd players did you actually rate at one time who ultimately never made it at Tannadice.
One that springs to mind instantly for me is Paul Kinnaird. I remember a game at Parkhead in the 80's he ripped Celtic apart as we beat them.

Jamie McCunnie looked like a great prospect.
Paul Walker was sensational against Dundee then pretty much disappeared
Stephen McConalogue scored for fun in the reserves/youths but couldn’t make the step up.

Jamie McCunnie
Hugh Davidson
Euan McLean

Ryan Dow
And yet he was a lick of paint away from being a cup final hero.

Greg Cameron looked a cracking player: cool, composed, good passer and chipped in with a few goals and then...
Nothing.

David Robertson - Treble Buster.
Always felt there was something in there but never fulfilled his potential. Decent off the bench but seemed to vanish whenever he started.

Paul Walker in that friendly versus Dundee ............"oh wee man, ohhhh wee man".........he ripped Dundee apart that day and then........nothing

Graeme Payne?
That is an odd choice SmedZ.
He has 2 league cup winners medals with Utd.

Played for a Scottish League X1 when with United I'm sure, did they reach as high as they probably should? Definitely not, as for the last boy never heard of him he must've really missed the boat.

I'll go with the boy in profile pic, Jimmy Page. Career essentially finished by Tom Boyd in the first minute of his full debut.
Watch the video and be shocked, don't think Boyd was even booked.
Sean Hird: didn't know he was at United, recall him at some Fife club.

Paul Kinnaird had a decent career, given how daft he was. If he'd buckled down, he should have gone further.

I went out with Jimmy Page’s niece in primary school lol. Joe McLeod could’ve went further.

Admittedly, not from our ranks, but Charlie Telfer was rated very highly by just about anyone who watched him. I think it just shows how difficult it is to predict which players will transition from under 19/20 to performing consistently at first team level. The lad has been to the Netherlands then a season with Morton and now with Falkirk.
