Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 14

Thanks for the numbers Pat.

The 13th match of the tournament witnessed victory registered for the track "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon & Garfunkel. It will now progress through to the 2nd Round as a consequence of said victory. The three tracks eliminated at this juncture are 'Yesterday' by The Beatles, 'I Didn't Understand' by Elliott Smith and 'Happed In Mist' by Michael Marra.

Round 1/Game 14 -

The Beach Boys - Caroline, No

Released - 7th March 1966
Written By - Brian Wilson and Tony Asher
Songs Background - It was initially written as "Carol, I Know". When spoken, however, Brian Wilson heard this as "Caroline, No." After the confusion was resolved, the pair decided to keep the new title, feeling that it brought a poignant earnestness to the song's sad melody.
Asher believes the song encapsulated "Brian's wish that he could go back to simpler days, his wish that the group could return to the days when the whole thing was a lot of fun and very little pressure."

Asher says his contributions were inspired by his former girlfriend, who had moved to New York and cut her hair: "I had recently broken up with my high school sweetheart who was a dancer and had moved to New York to make the big time on Broadway. When I went east to visit her a scant year after the move, she had changed radically. Yes, she had cut her hair. But she was a far more worldly person, not all for the worse. Anyway, her name was Carol."In 2005, Wilson stated: "That song to me is a real tear jerker, very like 'Hey Girl' by Freddie Scott. It wasn't written about anyone. I just used the name Caroline".

However, in high school, Wilson also became obsessed with Carol Mountain, a classmate and unrequited love interest. He said, "If I saw her today, I'd probably think, God, she's lost something, because growing up does that to people.'

But the song was most influenced by the changes me and my ex-Wife Marilyn and I had gone through. We were young, Marilyn nearing 20 and me closing in on 24, yet I thought we'd lost the innocence of our youth in the heavy seriousness of our lives. [Tony] took a tape home, embellished on my concept, and completed the words.

The Rolling Stones - Wild Horses

Released - 12th June 1971
Written By - Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Songs Background - In the liner notes to the 1993 Rolling Stones compilation album 'Jump Back', Jagger states, "I remember we sat around originally doing this with Gram Parsons, and I think his version came out slightly before ours.

Everyone always says this was written about Marianne Faithfull
but I don't think it was; that was all well over by then. But I was definitely very inside this piece emotionally."

Richards says, "If there is a classic way of Mick and me working together this is it. I had the riff and chorus line, Mick got stuck into the verses. Just like "Satisfaction"
, "Wild Horses" was about the usual thing of not wanting to be on the road, being a million miles from where you want to be.

The Beatles - Julia

Released - 22nd November 1968
Written By - John Lennon
Songs Background - "Julia" was written for John's mother, Julia Lennon(1914–1958), who was killed by a car driven by a drunk off-duty police officer when John was 17 years old. Julia Lennon had encouraged her Son's interest in music and bought him his first guitar. But after she split with John's father, John was taken in by his Aunt Mimi, and Julia started a new family with another man; though she lived just a few miles from John.

"I lost her twice," Lennon said. "Once as a five-year-old when I was moved in with my auntie. And once again when she actually physically died".

Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma

Released - 1990
Written By - Giacomo Puccini
Songs Background - "Nessun Dorma" is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera 'Turandot'.

Although "Nessun Dorma" has long been a staple of operatic recitals, Luciano Pavarotti
popularized the piece beyond the opera world in the 1990s following his performance of it for the 1990 Football World Cup, which captivated a global audience.  Both Pavarotti and Placido Domingo released singles of the aria, with Pavarotti reaching number 2 in the UK that same Summer.

Voting Closes Later Today (Sunday 7th July) at 10PM

Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 14

This is a really tough one. Hardest round yet, for me.

But will go for....Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma

Everything about that World Cup was magical. The wee Coca-Cola footballs, Roger Mila and Cameroon, the West Germany strip, the passion of the Italian fans in Rome, Gazza crying, Scotland beating Sweden, Stuart Pearce missing his pen etc etc etc.

What a Summer.
