Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 13

Thanks for the numbers Pat.

The 12th game of the tournament was another close encounter that was eventually won by the track "Forbidden Colours" by David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto. It will now progress through to Round 2 as a consequence of said victory. The three tracks eliminated at this stage of the tournament are 'Eventually But' by Underworld, 'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac and 'Falling' by Julee Cruise.

Round 1/Game 13 -

Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water

https://youtu.be/H_a46WJ1viA
Released - 20th January 1970
Written By - Paul Simon
Songs Background - "Bridge over Troubled Water" was composed by Paul Simon very quickly, so much so that he asked himself, "Where did that come from? It doesn't seem like me."

The title lyric was inspired by Claude Jeter's line "I'll be your bridge over deep water if you trust in me," which Jeter sang with his group, the Swan Silvertones, in the 1958 song "Mary Don't You Weep".

Simon later acknowledged his debt to Claude Jeter in person, and handed Jeter a cheque.

Simon wrote the song initially on guitar but transposed it to the piano to better reflect the Gospel influence and also, to suit Garfunkel's voice.

Michael Marra - Happed In Mist

https://youtu.be/aX-AiFVPw8g
Released - 1985
Written by - Michael Marra
Songs Background - The song was inspired by the classic Scottish novel 'Sunset Song', and in particular the character of Ewan Tavendale, a young farm hand who volunteers to fight for Britain in WWI. In the novel he eventually loses his mind in the trenches, due to the horros of War and hallucinates to the extent he see's his lover 'Christine' in No-Man's Land. He walks to 'her' and away from the battle. He is, as a consequence tragically given a firing squad for the act of 'cowardice'.

Elliott Smith - I Didn't Understand

https://youtu.be/CjLZF_zwn5A
Released - 25th August 1998
Written By - Elliott Smith
Songs Background - The final track on Smith's critically acclaimed album 'XO', the track is short in it's 2:17 composition. Believed to have been written from Elliott's point of view about his tumultuous relationship with girlfriend, Jeniffer Chiba, during an 'Off' period of their 'On-Off' relationship.

The Beatles - Yesterday

https://youtu.be/fCV9oqtwyVA
Released - 13th September 1965
Written By - Paul McCartney
Songs Background - Paul
McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room at the Wimpole Street home of his then girlfriend Jane Asher and her family. Upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it.

McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work. As he put it, "For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it.

"Upon being convinced that he had not robbed anyone of their melody, McCartney began writing lyrics to suit it. This track was the first (and only) of The Beatles songs that were composed and performed entirely by one member of the group.

Voting Closes Later Today (Thursday 4th July) at 10PM

Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 13

Went to the funeral of a family friend a few years back and when her coffin got taken down 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' got played and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Even now i get emotional when i hear it even after the first 4 bars.

But my vote goes to Michael Marra - Happed In Mist

A truly beautiful song.
