People need to watch his highlight reel of his goals last season. "He needs to play in a front 2" and "we need to get a winger to get balls in the box" are both myths. He scores all types of goals and is a total predator. Whether we play 4231 or 442 or anything else doesnt change the fact we have signed someone who has been red hot the last couple of years.

If we play the 4231 then its going to be Clark/C Smith/Pawlett in the role behind him and all of those players will spend their time close to Shankland. Clark drops slightly deeper yes, but it wasnt too often that our 1 striker was isolated last season.

Could only dream of that kind of pairing at the end of last season and now we are 50% there.

I’m delighted with this, the laddie ripped us and others a new arsehole last season if he can reproduce for us then I’ll be a happy Arab.

A lot of Ayr fans saying the majority of Shankland’s goals were created by Moffat in the last two years.

While he isn’t a striker, I think Ryan Gauld is the perfect player to provide the key pass to setup Shankland. If not Gauld, I think Cammy Smith can also play well in the shadow striker role behind Shankland if we go 1 up top.

I would be surprised if Neilson continues to play 1 up top though. I don’t know the detail of either contract, however, I think it’s pretty well known that both Shankland and Sow are on very good money for this level and I’d be surprised if Neilson can justify leaving either one or even both of them on the bench.

Look I can see why people are sceptical about any signing we make, we have been beaten down again and again over the past 4-5 years in particular. False dawn after false dawn. Players coming in and out in again all pretty much unable to get us going.

There is however got to be a turning point when we do sign the right players and they click. Let’s all hope and pray that this is the season which see’s us doing the bizz and not reverting to type.

One thing is for sure we now do have the right backing and infrastructure in place to allow this to happen.

There is justifiable pessimism and then there is whatever the fuck that site has become.
