Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 11

Thank you for the numbers MockChop.

The 10th game of the tournament witnessed a close encounter eventually won by The Smiths track "Asleep". This victory will ensure it's progress through to Round 2. The three tracks eliminated at this juncture are 'The Green Fields of France' by The Corries, 'Without You' by Badfinger and 'A Change Is Gonna Come' by Sam Cooke.

Round 1/Game 11 -

Bread - Everything I Own
https://youtu.be/_21cZe2eO_I
Released - 29th January 1972
Written By - David Gates
Songs Background - Although initial listeners may have interpreted it as a song about a broken relationship, Gates would later reveal that it was a song about the death of his father. According to the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing." David agreed by replying, "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record 'Everything I Own' about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, you gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all".

Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely
https://youtu.be/nZq_jeYsbTs
Released - 2nd October 2000
Written By - Radiohead
Songs Background - There have many theories amongst Radiohead fans as to the meaning of the song. Some have surmised the song is about depression, anxiety, even Thom Yorke feeling suicidal. The Radiohead frontman himself has said that this was the only song he actually purposely wrote for the album it appeared on ( "Kid A") and he song was an interpretation of how he was feeling at the time, which was extremely burnt-out after the release, marketing and touring of previous album "Ok Computer", and that he felt extremely 'unhinged' and on the verge of walking away from the band and music all-together as a consequence.

Frank Sinatra - As Time Goes By
https://youtu.be/n5uRG15T7kE
Released - 1931
Written by - Herman Hupfeld
Songs Background - The song was originally written in 1931 by Herman Hupfeld for the Broadway play "Everybody's Welcome". The song however came to fame some 11 years later when it featured in the classic Wartime film 'Casablanca'. In the movie the song was sung by the character 'Sam' played by American actor/singer Dooley Wilson.

Dennis Wilson - Time
https://youtu.be/KNUnUxYnvn0
Released - 22nd August 1977
Written By - Dennis Wilson
Songs Background - Fans of this cult classic album have interpreted this song in many ways. Some say it's just a straight-up love ballad from a guy who has realised the error of his ways. Others say that this song is an almost spooky premonition (as is the entire album) from Wilson about his own sad demise some 6 years later.

The line 'Home, home , sweet home...I'm going home' a fatal prediction of his own death by drowning and going back to his true home i.e. 'the beach'.

Voting Closes Later Today (Friday 28th June) at 10PM
