Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 10

Thanks for the numbers once again Paddy.

The 9th game of the tournament witnessed victory registered for the track "Philadelphia" by Neil Young. This victory will ensure it now progresses through to the next Round. The three tracks eliminated at this early stage of the competition are 'On And On And On' by Wilco, 'Coming Back To Life' by Pink Floyd and 'What A Good Year For The Roses' by George Jones.

Round 1/Game 10 -

The Smiths - Asleep
https://youtu.be/KbuGWgYLqWk
Released - 16th September 1985
Written By - Johnny Marr, Morrissey
Songs Background - The song has often been interpreted as Morrissey indicating his desire to take his own life. The song was only played live once, on the 1st October 1985 at Eden Court, Inverness, on the last date of The Smiths 1985 Scottish Tour. It was only played after a piano, that couldn't be moved off of the side of the stage, was discovered during soundcheck.

Badfinger - Without You
https://youtu.be/49dquH8tn6E
Released - 9th November 1970
Written by - Pete Ham, Tom Evans
Songs Background - 'Without You' is a rock ballad written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Welsh rockers Badfinger. The track was first released in 1970 on their album 'No Dice'. The track would go on to sell a bucket load of sales for, first Harry Nilsson and then Mariah Carey, some years later.

A sadly ironic fact given Badfinger eventually disbanded after several years of crippling legal costs (due to Managerial and record company disputes) and poorer than expected record sales.

Tragically both songwriters would take their own lives, as the stresses of years of legal costs and endless legal disputes took a heavy emotional toll on both men.

Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come
https://youtu.be/xZ3aDrn7P4M
Released - February 1964
Written By - Sam Cooke
Songs Background - The song was inspired by various personal events in Cooke's life, most prominently an event in which he and his entourage were turned away from a 'white's only' Hotel in Louisiana. Cooke felt compelled to write a song that spoke to his struggle and of those around him, and that pertained to the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle of his fellow African-Americans.

Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 10

I would have said Asleep about 10 years ago but I’ve done a few visits to the First World War battlefields. First time I did the Battle of Somme battlefields at the end of a very emotional day the guide played The Green Fields of France and it proper got me. It’s was incredibly moving. So I’m voting for The Corries

Re: Most Emotional Track Ever - Round 1/Game 10

Asleep - The Smiths

to me, a song about suicide.
poignant ending, with his voice getting further away then the music box playing Auld Lang Syne, symbolising a new beginning
