Re: Summer signings/rumours

Putting 200 or 500 on the gate will be how our form is and who against.

Not because we (could)have Lawrence Shankland.

I personally think he would score a lot more than Pav did last season. I loved Pav but he missed some absolute sitters that you would have to expect Shankland would have easily put away. I saw him live in the flesh 4 times last season and in 3 of those games he looked like a player that was destined for an Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts type club or low/mid English Championship team. The last one was the 2-1 at Tannadice and he looked miles off it. Hopefully if we do manage to pull this off then we get the absolute predator that he was in the first half of the season. He was unplayable at times.

In the 5-0 game Shankland’s performance was one of the best I’ve seen from a poacher in years at Tannadice, albeit up against Edjenguele. His instincts were excellent but he was in the form of his life and anything he touched turned to gold.

In our 2-1 win he looked visibly heavier and a yard slower than before, albeit up against probably a better defence and I read that he was rushed back too quickly because McCall had no other options.

Hopefully a full pre-season of rest and recovery means he could replicate his early season form.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Hopefully if we do get him Neilsen has a rethink of tactics to suit him. Needs wingers firing in crosses. This tippy tappy slow build up or aimless punts has to stop or we're looking at a repeat of last season. Signing Shankland then playing him on the wing(to accommodate Sow) would give me the boak.

It's not where you're from it's where you're at.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Tbf to neilson safranko was only ever played on wing as his work rate was immense, he wouldn’t have done it to anyone else

If a CENTRE forward runs a wider channel on occasion does that make him a winger?
There's a lot of positional movement between players these days to try outfox the opposition.
When I was player manager (joint) of the mighty Kelso AFC we played in red.
I used to tell the team to pass to a man in red & run around & help each other out.
Never won the league tho....

***should have added the above was implemented whilst sticking to a basic 4-3-3 formation. I wasn't that tacticly naive! Mobility was the name of the game

Re: Summer signings/rumours

So... any other rumours floating about? Shankland taken up the last couple of days but I'm sure we'll have others in the pipeline.

Nothing new since Nicholson, Fox & Conway’s names were on the go

Re: Summer signings/rumours

If we sign Shankland, Nicholson wouldn’t be the winger I’d go for.

He is more in an inside forward mould (ie cutting in from the left onto his stronger right foot) which would limit the number of crosses into the forwards.

Agree and was thinking exactly the same but also wondering how our New, hopefully mobile and composed full backs fit into the tactics for next year.

This should speed up our transition to attack no end. Hopefully a bit like the effect Ralston had last year but on both sides.

This for me, it’s ok having good wingers but if the full backs are absolutely rank and offer absolutely 0 going forward/overlapping etc it makes the wingers job twice as hard

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Dundee United boss Robbie Neilson admits he has “aimed high” in his pursuit of Lawrence Shankland as he looks for quality not quantity.Neilson, who has been putting his players through pre-season training at St Andrews this week, has made an offer to the Ayr United striker’s representatives and is awaiting a response.Should the in-demand 23-year-old say yes then the Tangerines’ manager will be delighted.Should the answer be no then he will just move on to other targets.Neilson confirmed he is likely to bring in just two or three more players – which would, ideally, include Shankland – over the summer to join fresh faces Liam Smith and Adrian Sporle. The watchword at United this close-season is “continuity” and the gaffer is convinced that there is no need for wholesale change at Tannadice.Neilson said: “Lawrence is a player who is available and one we would like to bring in.“We want to be going for good players. We don’t just want to be going around the merry-go-round of the same players.“I think it is important that we aim high.“There are a number of players we are looking and we are working through a list of people.“We have three or four targets for each target position.“I would actually be content to start the season with this group as it is now.“I am more than happy with the squad we have at the moment but we could still bring maybe two or three more in.“They will have to be boys that will bring in more quality and improve the squad as opposed to just fill it up.“I am conscious about not making too many changes because I think continuity is a big thing.“I don’t want to go crazy on recruitment.“You look at some other teams and they are bringing in 14 or 15 new players and that has been a problem here in the past.“I hope continuity in the squad can be an advantage for us. When you bring in 14 or 15 guys they might gel or might not. You just don’t know.“It could be that five will do well, five will be terrible and the other five may or may not work out.“I look at Ayr who came into the Championship last year, didn’t change too much over the summer but did really well. I also look at the top league and see how Livingston didn’t change much but still did well.“Hopefully, we can be a bit like that.”Neilson revealed he and sporting director Tony Asghar had both hoped to keep a lid on the Shankland bid but moved to confirm it when faced with media interest in the story. The United boss said: “Shankland is one that came up and we would have liked to have kept it under wraps but it came out.“We decided to comment on it and be honest about it.“We have offered a deal and it could get done tomorrow or it could happen on August 31.“Until a player is here with a scarf over his head… Mind you even at that point you can’t be sure!“No, until the contract is signed you just have to wait and see.”Two players who definitely will be wearing tangerine in the new season are Adrian Sporle and Liam Smith, both of whom have been getting to know their new colleagues this week.Neilson is looking forward to working with both, saying: “Liam has come in on a pre-contract and he is from good stock having played in the Championship with Ayr and in the Premiership with Hearts.“Adrian is one whom we tracked since January. We had people out there in Argentina who watched him for us and I think he will bring really good competition to that position.“We were really keen to get him here as quickly as we could. His contract at (Atletico) Banfield didn’t finish until the end of this month but we spoke to them and asked to get him early. There was no problem at all getting him out as they were just wrapping up their season.“I think it’s important that he gets all of the pre-season training and gets his English improved as well. He needs to get used to his new surroundings and it is a big change for the boy as he is coming halfway around the world to play. He is desperate to do well.”The Tangerines have three players still working themselves back from injury and not yet doing the pre-season work. They are Calum Butcher, Ian Harkes and Peter Pawlett.Neilson said: “Calum had a groin injury right at the end of the season in the St Mirren game, while Ian also had an injury over the summer.“I expect the two of them to be back next week and maybe play in the two games following this Saturday’s one at East Fife.“Peter had an issue with his knee carried over from last season and he should be back soon as well.”United, meanwhile, appear to have accepted that frontman Pavol Safranko won’t be returning to Tannadice from Danish club Aalborg.Neilson said: “We have been costed out of that, to be honest with you.“Pavol did really well when he came in but probably hindered us to a point in that he got into the international team and that meant Aalborg wanted to bring him back and look at him in pre-season.”

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Harry Cochrane at Hearts is one of Neilson’s targets apparently. Most likely would just be a loan though.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Not a big fan of signing ex players.

But would anyone take Ryan Gauld back?

His career seems to be going nowhere.

I'd take him back but would he come back? Would he be deemed a failure so far by coming back to Tannadice?

Yes. I’ve mooted this on here for weeks.

Gauld, Shankland and Nicholson and we’d be good to go.

I guess he probably would.

But he is now approaching 24 and his career is going nowhere fast.

Coming back to Utd and playing regularly and being appreciated by a support might just be what he needs. This next season is huge for the wee man, i feel.

All our central midfielders seem to be defensive types.

When we are up against teams who put everyone behind the ball we don't have a player who can unlock defences or provide that wee bit of magic.

He could.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

what I was told today.

we are the only club with a concrete offer to Shankland.
there is an offer in for Craig Conway.
second / third hand info that we are interested in Kyle Lafferty.
and Neilson would like Harry Cochrane in (likely a loan).

make of those what you will.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Ryan Gauld is a level headed, realistic lad, He wouldn't think of being a failure himself if he came back. Whatever he does is part of a process. And I doubt he'd give many fucks what other people think.

Lafferty is a new rumour: he's quite an unlikeable player. But he's very experienced, and would likely be quite an asset in the Championship.

True points I think Pat.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Lafferty is a massive Hun who doubtless hates Utd. And there's no way Sevco would entertain our approaches.

Non starter imo.

P.s he's exactly the type of forward we need btw. Even more so than Shankland.

Lee McCulloch is a massive hun too and hes happy enough to be here.

Do you know him personally pat? Do you know what he thinks? He may indeed think the way you say but he may also think differently.  His career since departing tannadice hasn't been great. His next move could be his last chance.

Sat on plane to Lisbon with him a few years ago, his mum and partner were sitting in a different section of the plane. Also spoke to him on the wee bus to the terminal. I'd followed his career in Portugal and was able to converse with him about that. He didn't ask much about me!

Think he'd just been sent off in an U21 match at Pittodrie, so was flying back earlier than anticipated.

So no, I don't know him personally, but chatting for an elongated period with him, he seemed a level headed lad who was focused about his career, not what other people thought of him. He appeared an intelligent person without any of the daftness which sometimes is associated with football players.

Level headed to not take me up on the offer of a return to Tannadice to help us out at that time! That might now have changed, but I doubt if his character has.

Re: Summer signings/rumours

Ryan Gauld had an easy out when he outgrew us - could’ve got a move to Celtic and been a mainstay in their team, just like SA before him.

But I commend him for being brave and trying something different, yes it probably can’t be classed as a success but good on him for taking a risk.

We could be a good option for him. A club he knows well playing at a level he would dominate at unless he has regressed which is unlikely.

It’d be a major coup which would invigorate the fans.
