I always thought it funny the way Italians over here had fish and chip shops. You wouldn't normally associate them with deep fried food but the inventors of the deep fried pizza were infact Neapolitan. Pizza fritta comes from Naples.
Last time I was in Milan there was a shop there selling them and queue was out the door.

It's like the Open University in here, I never knew deep fried pizza was from Italy's south.

Regarding the Fish and Chips Italian link, I'm sure the food originated in Northern England, but in Scotland Italians dominated the trade. A theory is that Italian immigrants arrived in London where the fish suppers had spread to from Yorkshire etc, saw the success of these businesses and brought the idea to the Scots.

In reality there were probably fish and chip shops here before the first major wave of Italians arrived in the 1890s, but they made the trade more popular and dominated it by the First World War.

I'm hoping someone comes in now with even more information about chip shops and the Italians, but as a footnote (and probably as a bit of casual racism) in the same way that we are no longer supposed to mention the 'Paki' shop or the 'Chinky' carry out, I recall being sent to the 'Tallies' when I was wee.
