Dundee United boss Robbie Neilson has held his first formal talks with new owner Mark Ogren as the club’s recruitment drive gets under way.
The Tangerines are expected to make former Celtic and MK Dons striker Aidan Nesbitt their first signing of the transfer window and there will be more to follow this month.
Neilson held a trans-Atlantic conference call with American business man Ogren and his son Scott just after the new year bells had died down and it is all systems go at Tannadice.
The manager confirmed: “Having spoken to the owners on Wednesday, they are really keen to push the club forward.
“That was the first time I spoke to them (since the buyout), apart from having briefly chatted before they took over.
“It went well. It’s really important to have that relationship.
“They are coming over here in the middle of January when we will have another good chat.
“We were just on a conference call so it was quite difficult to get things across but it is clear they have ambitions to take the club as far as they can, which matches my own ambition.
“One of the reasons I spoke to him (Mark) was to explain that you have to have a relationship.
“You have to be able to make decisions and, when things are happening quickly, you can’t wait too long to get it over the line.
“Relationships will evolve and they will build.
“It’s not going to happen overnight but everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet and everyone has the same ambition for the club. So these are exciting times.
“You know his background, that he’s got a couple of sports clubs in America.
“He is ambitious to push the football side now. He’s got ideas about where he wants to take the club.
“It’s a great time to be here and be part of it.
“The whole structure of the club is changing and there will be talks on that as time goes on.
“At the moment, I’m very very comfortable with the way things are progressing.
“The club are trying to create a structure that can take the club forward – and it’s a structure I believe in.’
Neilson didn’t get involved in a name game but he does seem only too willing to work with United’s soon-to-arrive sporting director Tony Asghar.
“Football has evolved,” added Neilson.
“It always changing and it’s becoming like a proper business, as it should be.
“So you have levels in clubs, you have hierarchies, you have long-term planning in a club.
“Gone are the days when it was the local butcher made good and a manager running the club.
“It is all big companies, big sponsorship, big ideas.
“That’s the way Dundee United are going and the way all clubs will go, if they have real potential.
“Football is getting bigger and bigger.
“Even in the Championship, we’re a big club in this league and, if we do get promoted like we want to, it becomes even bigger again.
“There is so much in the background of football these days – the commercial side, dealing with agents, dealing with players – all sorts of different things.
“So the more experienced and good people you can get in, the better it is for us.”
United could attempt to move on as many as half-a-dozen members of the first-team squad as well as send a few younger players out on loan.
Neilson added: “It’s like anything football, in that if we want players in we need to move players out.
“Players understand the situation.
“I’ve been there as a player and manager.
“All they want is honesty. You are better telling them like it is.
“Players know it and understand it. They know you move on.
“We’re working in the background to get things moving.”
United welcome Partick Thistle to Tannadice tomorrow and the pressure is on after their shock loss to Alloa last Saturday.
Neilson said: “It’s tough to get out this league – no doubt about it.
“As a big club, every time you go somewhere you’re a scalp.
“That’s why we need a level of player who can handle that expectation.
“We want to be in a position where not only do we get out of this league but to be able to push on for the top six.
“To do that you need to have a core of players who stay with you right through the journey.
“What you want is that base to get yourself out of the Championship and then give you a springboard for the next step.
“The players I’m targeting are ones I think can take us higher again.”
United will have captain Fraser Fyvie available for the Jags game after he missed the defeat to the Wasps through injury.

I understand that people are nervous because they would rather have players in place first before telling boys they are free to go.
I doubt we have the cash to do that though and it makes good sense to let those not in the managers plans know as soon as possible so we can get them off the wage bill.
I find it amazing though that it is being branded as mixu-esque or high risk telling players that took 5 off of Ayr and then lost to a part time outfit from a winning position with 15mins to go.
I he needs to call on any of those players again, we are fucked so there is no point keeping them hanging on.
If Neilson hadn’t said something we’d be questioning him for that and saying he was deluded.
After the Ayr and Alloa defeats social media and this board we’re awash with ‘get these imposters out my club’. Now they have been told to beat it - we are nervous??

Was just through at St.Andrews.
There were 2 squads going over things. A squad of 19 and a squad of about 9 on their own.
The squad of 9 included Toshney, Edge, Curran, Loemba, King, Rabitsch who we all thought would be moved on. In amongst them for some of the time was Glass & Nesbitt. Which is odd. No sign of Barton at all.

Watson was in with the main squad

Oh and fucking Murdo was in the main squad too.

Gave the foul away for their free kick for the equaliser too. Utter shite.

There was 2 sets of goals up when I was there. A large group of 19 or so at the goals closest to me. The goals furthest away included the players mentioned. Prior to this, they were ALL playing high tempo boxes with 2 in the middle together. But when it came to the stage where they work on tactics, the group split in 2.

so King and Curran (probably because he is going to dundee?) are only 2 from alloa team pushed out maybe?
Nielsen has already said Curran would be involved tomorrow.

he specifically stated some of those playing against Alloa simply werent good enough. Guess we will find out tomorrow.

Still of the thought that, at best, Robbie has gambled going public with his anger at some players.
I fully agree with the sentiment, many of the players aren't capable of getting us up, but, given the game tomorrow, he's going to have to rely of boys he's hung out to dry, to an extent.
Another aspect: if you are trying to move unwanted players on, it maybe isn't wise to advertise them as ill-equipped for the Championship.
Finally, I'll always give future players a chance, but is anyone else a wee bit disappointed that no new defenders or a goalkeeper have been rumoured?

Agree 100%
His rant on Saturday (whilst honest) is sadly reminding me a bit of Mixu's 'what's the point of fucking training?' rant. Which backfired on him.
@ETA i agree that we want these players out (just about all of them). But you can't just push players out the door enmasse, as you know mate.
I just worry that if these signings (whenever they happen) don't do the business immediately then Neilson has burned his bridges with certain players.
Though i kinda take your point that if we have to turn to these players then we are in trouble anyway.
Bottomline is despite this being his first transfer window Neilson has now dug himself into a hole of his own making whereby he will have to get EVERY signing 100% bang-on.

Comparing mixu to neilson hahahahahaha fs, mixu was a fucking clown, burnt his bridges with who, The players that won’t be here?? He was honest and he was right there a fucking joke, we all say it everyweek on here so what difference does it make??

honest to fuck boys, think about it...
The playing staff are shite. They have been for fucking years now. Some of them flat our robbing a wage. There is no manager out there, in the world, who is going to "get the best" out of this group of players. Let alone get us promoted.
The boardroom was an issue, a fucking big one, but that looks to be changing for the better (fingers crossed)... we've had how many managers in the last 4 or 5 years now? The one fucking constant throughout this period for the club is the fucking DROSS we are running out onto the field week in week out. I'm fucking glad he's calling them out and I'm desperate for him to bring quality players in... we'll see.
But i've no fucking problem with him making public statements. If players cant handle it, dont perform at their level, whatever the fuck that is... then they've no business being at the club in the first place. Fucking fannies.

Spot on. People are getting really uptight about these comments from Neilson. The vast majority of the starting 11 against Alloa will stay at the club. I think he is mostly frustrated that he cant rotate more because of the depth of the squad. McMullan/King are good examples. I'd be more than happy having them on the bench and playing their part (Neilson's first couple of games they were both excellent). But relying on them to deliver week-in-week-out is impossible. So strength in depth is what we need.
You are looking at players like barton, loemba, rakovan (players brought in on two year deals) as the likey candidates to be moved on.

Players who won't be here?
No-one has left. No-one has signed.
As it is we are having to go with the same squad he just said was 'nowhere near good enough' to get us out of this division.
