Getting lost down an Arab Archive foxhole tonight and (as per) so impressed with the content on there. Brilliant site.
What I find intriguing is not the stats most of us all know, though. More obscure facts or moreover matches we have maybe forgotten about or even before our time.
So thought i'd start a wee thread about it and you chaps can add any obscure match (or fact) of your own liking if you would like too.
Obscure match -

A Berti Vogts 'experiment'. United's own Jim Lachlan+Alan Combe were part of the Scotland team, rather than the Utd team.

The very first Kirin cup over here featured United along with Spurs. We made the final.

I was at the two Australia games and I remember the game against Scotland B, the United side back then gave me the fear,as did most of the Scotland B team, three future United players and two (at the time) present, or it could be the other way around as I cannot remember the year Warren Cummings was with us.

Was at both Australia games too. No memory of that game v Scotland though!

Over the years United have undertaken many trips abroad and to many countries, but at the end of season 69-70, United players could say "We were there when the World Cup took place in Mexico." Just before the tournament got under way in Mexico, United played two games in the capital against the Mexican World Cup eleven.
The first game was played within a few days of United's arrival in Mexico and with no time to acclimatise to the heat nor attitude were heavily defeated by the national side. Four days later, the two sides met again in the Olympic Stadium and fared much better going down only 2-0 with lan Mitchell missing from the penalty spot. Both games attracted around 75,000. On their way home United paid a high speed visit to Greece and went down 3-1 to Panathinaikos.

This game was a big deal in Selangor, Malaysia as it was the grand opening of the countries brand new purpose built National Stadium.
Over 100,000 crammed into the Stadium to see Selangor and DUFC battle out a 1-1 draw.
The countries top brass were all in attendance including top ranking politicians and members of the royal family including the Sultan.

Some great photos TEK.
Rumour is Bruce Grobbelaar had Billy McKinlay to score and the game to end in a draw.

Thon Ristic was fucking diabolical. To think Paddy Connolly was basically punted from the first team for that fucking dumpling. No wonder we got relegated.

Aye not great but he scored a few goals. Couple of screamers so at least he contributed a little bit. Looked a right tube though.

Is that the biggest crowd we've played in front of?

I reckon it must be.
The biggest crowd we played at Hampden was 75,000, twice (Against Rangers in the 1940 Emergency Cup Final and the 1974 Scottish Cup Final v Celtic). 74,000 v Celtic in '88 SCF.
And of course 75,000 versus Mexico in the above match in the 1970 World Cup warm-up match.
Reckon this is the only +100,000 crowd DUFC have played in front of though.

Although your entire existence on this board seems to be sarcastically replying to folk like a childish bellend I'll respond. My point is there are players who play several games and contribute absolutely nothing positive so chipping in some goals at least contributes something. Grow up now or go away and let the adults speak.

Two or 3 days after the Selangor match we also played Bayern Munich in the same stadium. Also a 1-1 draw.

Well Paddy Connolly went on to have a half decent career in Scotland after he left United playing in the SPL for the majority of his career but you seem to think Ristic's three goals (in theory contributed to 4 points) were worthy of replacing Connolly so if that floats your boat fair enough.
On your "your entire existence on this board seems to be sarcastically replying to folk like a childish bellend" comment is solely based on me commenting about two absolutely shite United players I feel your attack on me is totally unjust but if that's the way you feel just put me on ignore or fuck off back to EastFannies where your yourself are a bit of a cunt yourself but I don't feel the need to let you know it.

United's fortunes have improved, so maybe folk need something else to moan about on these pages?
That Forthbank international trial match in 2002, it's just up the road from me so I went to see it, but ended up staying in the Halfway House, now sadly gone.

Apologies to everyone, really not liking derailing this fine thread but this needs addressed. Your first point.....what on earth are you on about. You think I preferred Ristic to Paddy? What planet are you on? Read please

I'm not one for starting or getting involved in arguments on a fucking internet forum but I'm not going to stand back and take it from that prick. Two post in the matter of days he had something to say about me, I have the right to defend myself.
