Re: BBC ALBA

To be fair, there would be hardly any programmes produced in Scotland if it was not for those made by BBC Alba. Having said that, the BBC are to blame for restricting the amount of cash that is directed for overall Scottish content, and BBC Alba is always under threat and review.

The BBC is funded via Westminster by our money as a (supposed) state broadcaster. All the signage on the likes of police cars, train stations and public buildings is paid for by us, via the Scottish government.

As someone who is tri-lingual, I think both governments are very wasteful of our money.

Mind you, my three languages are Bad, Rubbish and fuckin' English.

Re: BBC ALBA

The real reason for the promotion of Gaelic is it is another attempt by the SNP to try and create the illusion that Scotland is a completely different place to England.
It keeps the braveheart re-enactment society happy.

Don't really think this is true: as an example, the Gaelic signage on trunk roads was implemented in the early part of this century, when Labour was in control, and bilingual signs were placed in the Highland Council area in the 'eighties. The Highland Council project was led by an Englishman, who was Director of Transport Services. The Council itself had 52 seats, of which 3 were held by the SNP.

The use of Gaelic on government buildings throughout Scotland was introduced by the Scottish Executive, run by Labour when they took power in 1999.

Gaelic names on train stations was introduced in the mid-'nineties, pre-Holyrood. The Tories were in charge at the time.

As an aside, I'm not an SNP voter.

Or maybe it's just an attempt to keep our old language alive in some aspect.

Whatever this Gaelic project is costing the country it is a complete waste of money

That's simply not true. Scots Gaelic was spoken centrally and as far down as Dumfries and Galloway.

P.s. it's only some words on signs. Hardly worth bothering about.

Re: BBC ALBA

The spread of Gaelic is debated by most historians. However it is as good as defunct. Its a lot more than a few roadsigns. Millions have been spent on what the nats called" a concerted effort to revive the language. As i said before its an attempt to create division with the RUK The SNPs raison detre

Re: BBC ALBA

Can’t wait for an independent Scotland to make Gaelic compulsory in schools instead of English.  Then in a few years we’ll be able to take the English of the signs and save all that money again.  We can then spend the saved money on bringing tartan back properly and having kids wearing kilts to school like they should always have been.

Bring on the SNP’s division.  (As caused by the Tories and labour as Pat has already explained)
Bloody Facts!!

It's a lot more than just signs. It's an entire television channel funded by BBC licence fees which are being blatantly misused.

I like ALBA.

Has shown live matches and made good football documentaries (the Utd '87 apart).

The biggest part of their budget (which will be modest) will be spent on their football output.

The relevant words are "was spoken" ....past tense!  Not today in the 21st century.

It's not 'past tense' though.

There are still people speaking it.

Strange how some of my fellow Scots feel threatened that our indigineous language is promoted and given a platform.🤔

Re: BBC ALBA

I've been told by a colleague in work whos first language is gaelic that a lot of the signage is incorrect.

Been a bit controversial up in Aberdeenshire as well since Doric was the historical language there, not Gaelic.

Thinks they also spend a good chunk on musical (and other cultural/heritage) activities, of which there is a substantial following in Scotland and around the globe.

I'd say Scots is more relevant than gaelic.
