Alloa's first 'win' at Tannadice in SIXTY YEARS!!

Last success in Dundee v Utd was April 1958.

Don't have any actual details but my guess is that Jerry Kerr was Alloa's manager and Denis Gillespie and John White were probably playing for them then.

Not there to day but stats say we had 20 shots of which 8 on target. Given we struggle normally to have 8 shots with 2 or 3 on target, the stats suggest we were more attacking and less sideways and backwards  than we normally are, however the updates from fans don't bear this out. Can anybody say whether we were more attack minded today or alternatively give a reason for the supposedly better stats

I could not make today's game so kept an eye on the BBC stats from the game and United updates on Twitter and my thoughts was from what I could make of the information was that United was comfortable and having a lot of chances and possession.

I am always wary about using such information as it can clearly be altered to show how people want it to be seen, particularly updates and I usually try to find various sources you match reports to see if the information matches what happened.  This is for games that I cannot attend such as today.

It seems the stats are misleading as reading what is being said about the game it does not sound anywhere near as comfortable as BBC match stats suggest in particular.

Problem is stats don't matter much to maist fans when you string a hattrick of defeats together versus teams like Arbroath, Ross County and fkn Alloa.

Re: Utd v Alloa ~ Sat 21/7/18 (3pm)

Just seen on Twitter Alloa won 7-1 in '58 with the legendary John White scoring 5 and Denis Gillespie the other 2. Jerry Kerr was Alloa's manager. That 7-1 (when we were a struggling 2nd div side) doesn't seem so bad as losing on pens to a newly promoted part time outfit today

Bring back the (real) "United Way" not the kiddy-on Martin version

Sore to admit this, but I wish I'd never went yesterday. That's how bad I'm feeling.

Failure by MM for not seeing the manager for what he is now really coming home to roost.

Re: Utd v Alloa ~ Sat 21/7/18 (3pm)

What's really sad is you have some of our support slating this competition, one excuse on twitter is that "it's pointless since you don't get into Europe for winning it"

I thought going to cup finals was to see your team win the cup not a place in Europe.

I thought we would be seeing signs of improvement but I remain unconvinced this side can win the league unless performances improve quickly

Re: Utd v Alloa ~ Sat 21/7/18 (3pm)

We are Dundee United we should be attempting to win games no matter what competition or outcome.

No club fears a game at Tannadice any more ....doesn’t matter what’s at stake......Alloa ffs!

From the Alloa Athletic website:

Jim Goodwin after winning Penalty shoot out against Dundee United

"I was really pleased with the overall performance, there was a spell after about twenty minutes of the first half I felt Dundee United were on top and they were on top for about ten minutes in that spell and they looked dangerous, but over the whole piece I thought the game plan was brilliant the boys carried it out to the letter, pressing them high, we knew they wanted to play out from the back, we went and locked on and caused them to make mistakes and kick the ball out the park and it eventually they started after ten minutes going long from their goalkeeper and played into our hands to be honest with Zac and Andy going to compete with Nicky Clark and compete for second balls."

Arbroath too were confident of getting a result against our tactics, such as they are, last week.

Re: Utd v Alloa ~ Sat 21/7/18 (3pm)

Why would they work now they have not worked for the last two seasons, everyone presses high and our tactics give every team time to get back and defend in two banks while we play it sideways.

Got to ask is it our tactics or our players that have cost us the promotion in the last two seasons!!!

Absolutely his tactics, and his stubborness and shortcomings along with MM's faith in this loser is looking very likely to see us playing in the Championship for years to come, why bother with a root and branch review, clearout and streamline, then see fit too keep an inept manager that is driving the lifeblood of the club away with the unproductive, boring style that has been ineffective for his entire tenure. He surely has to go.

meh - we keep having same conversation Csabas tactics are easy to pick off.  His formation is simple to play against because of that.

get him to fuck.  in a boot of a car if necessary

Been doing my nut in for ages this.

Press up high on our full backs and they then have to either pass it a long the back 4 or shell it forward (which is ok if you have some height from middle to front in the team but we don't apart from maybe Barton).

We are so easy to play against.

Lack height, strenght and pace from middle to front.

And have done now for well over 3 years.

They wouldn’t have to just shell it long if there was movement ahead of them.  The lack of movement off the ball in midfield and forward positions is horrific.

You can’t play a passing game if no one wants the ball.

Exactly. That's why Csabas tactics worked a lot better when Fyve and Fraser were fit and in the team. They both looked for the ball (Fyvie in particular) and worked in tandem. They brought others into it as well. Csaba persisting with this way of playing when clearly the players at his disposal aren't good enough/suited to this style of football shows how stubborn/clueless/one dimensional he is.

Too much commotion

I should have added.

They 'shell it' because we don't have a playmaker who can confidentally get the ball and move it box to box.

We don’t have anyone who can confidently do anything at the moment.  I don’t think the players actually know what they’re meant to be doing.

Manager needs replaced, new guy needs to sign 4 better players than we have then play a style and system that suits the players we have.  All rather simple really.
