TBH I've never been able to mak my mind up aboot this competition. If it didna happen, it wouldna baather me, but if we're playin in it, I'll go and watch my team.

Here's what oor neebors up the road thought of this important fixture.

https://spfl.co.uk/challenge-cup/fixture/3639984/

110 - did that include the fox and the moose.

Re: Utd v Cowdenbeath - Tuesday 15th August 7.45pm (Irn Bru Cup)

Would the doubters wish there was no competition at all or are they just not happy with the format of the competition?
It's been running for 27 seasons so it has got a bit of background.
Is it just the fact that we qualify which you don't like, it's beneath us??
We are where we are remember. If we don't like it let's get promoted.
Would you rather Irn Bru spent their money elsewhere, women's rugby maybe?
It would be a goldmine for Scottish cricket, I can tell you that.
I'll be at the Alloa game hoping we win.

Just trying to rekindle Pat's debate....

It's not really my debate, anyone can join in!

To answer your question, it's the format, not the competition. For smaller clubs it's a great chance to get close to, or win some silverware. Or it was.

It's been spoiled in the last two years by the inclusion of all the extra teams is my simple response. And it's been done to help out two teams alone.

As an aside, and as yet unannounced by the SPFL, clubs have rejected the notion of placing U20 sides into the 2nd division, these U20 sides then having a promotion opportunity. The next step, I'm told, is an extension of the Lowland League* to allow Celtic and The Rangers to play their colt sides there (and then get promotion, no doubt, to the place the lower league clubs presently don't want them).

* and Highland League, if Aberdeen want involved.

Mmm, if Big Top League giants can attract a mighty 110 fans to their games, how many will turn up to these Colts in the lowland league games

I don't like the fact we qualify, not because it's beneath us right now, but because it should be - that's a whole other debate tho.

In terms of format, I like the addition of the 'foreign' sides, could even be extended, they should be in it from the start tho.  I don't like the reason they've been brought in to it however.

I don't mind the dev sides being in it either, or even having 2 overage players, it's a reasonable footballing move.  Again tho I don't like the reason they've really been brought in, everything is being done with an ulterior motive which revolves around 2 clubs in Glasgow.

Genuinely the only chance of winning a 'trophy' for a lot of lower league clubs so I'd imagine it's seen a little differently by their supports and fair enough.

If this shitey plan worked to give the Glasgow 2 the best of both worlds would it be a better option than the current?

Re: Utd v Cowdenbeath - Tuesday 15th August 7.45pm (Irn Bru Cup)

Some of you feel the 'foreign' clubs shouldn't have been included but would look forward to an away day/night to Wales or all Ireland.
And the paranoia about the Colts' inclusion being expressly for you know who is unwaranted.
There will be plenty of other waters running under the bridge before reconstruction on behalf of them is precipitated by this tournament, the format of the Challenge Cup will ultimately count as a drop in the ocean..

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand that last sentence either!

No, having 2 Rangers and 2 Celtic sides playing in a professional set up that's really already too big will help nobody but those 2.  Also if the 'big boys' ever did enter some Atlantic league or move to England how many overage players do you think the SPFL would allow them to have once their dev teams were up in the premiership, my money's on them being changed to 'reserve' teams and then continuing to win everything up here between them while their 1st teams struggle elsewhere.  It's a con.

I reckon the prospect of a 'Celtic' league is there in the background too, although on reflection that would allow Celtic to fuck off and play their home games in Dublin and Rangers to do likewise in Belfast, so not all bad.

Also, careful not to be just posting u agree wi other posters too often, some folk don't like it. 😉

It's not paranoia, but whether you believe that or not is up to you.

And actually the biggest obstacles to reconstruction happening were overcome the minute they were allowed dev teams to play in this competition.

Hope yer right. Folk are justified to worry about the motives. Authorities cant be trusted but have a history of making a cunt of things. Would be great if we gained something better out of a shit attempt to benefit the fuckers.

I'd like to draw the Welsh or Irish in a late stage of the competition.
Don't think colt teams do it any good. Give the colt teams a colt cup instead and keep things seperate fae top league.

Re: Utd v Cowdenbeath - Tuesday 15th August 7.45pm (Irn Bru Cup)

The Challenge Cup should be for the teams outwith the Premier League. Not happy to be in it as it means were not in the PL but thats a cross we have to bear for the failures of Jackie ST and a few others.

Happy for the Colts to have their own competition and if they want to denegrate/expand it (you choose) by including Highland/Lowland Leagues, Juniors or Irish or Welsh so be it but lets have a wee bit of integrity and let the 30 diddy teams (us included) have our own (fizzy pop) comp.

Agree with Pat that the the so called expansion is a vehicle to let the Ugly Sisters get their own 2nd teams competing in the Scottish divisions and this will (a) just make them even stronger and (b) be the death knell for some of the wee-er provincial clubs

Bring back the (real) "United Way" not the kiddy-on Martin version
