Taking shape

Well the squad looks to be taking shape a few good signings I feel we have made so far. Disappointed we resigned flood and Murdoch but hey ho it's done now sadly.

What other positions do you want or think we need to strenthen and do you see any players moving away?

Another striker and a centre half should see us nearly ready for the season.

Think Bell and Donaldson will move before en s of august. Donaldson will agree a termination I think...

Re: Taking shape

Copy' n' pasted from another thread.

'Get Zeefuik and Quinn in.

Bell will depart and i still have a feeling Fraser will go in this window (just a gut feeling).Hopefully Donaldson can find a new club.Waste of a career for the boy not played regulary since his Livi days.'

Re: Taking shape

At the moment we have:

GK - Bell, Lewis and Mehmet
RB - Murdoch and Ballantyne
CB - Durnan, Edge, Toshney and Donaldson
LB - Scobbie, Robson
RM - McMullan
CM- Briels, Stanton, Allardice, Flood, Brad Smith, Scott Fraser and Archie Thomas.
LM- King
ST - McDonald, Keatings, Matty Smith and N'Koyi.

If Donaldson leaves, hoping we sign Quinn, hopefully we sign Zeefuik as well for up top and we will stroll the championship.

Re: Taking shape

Toshney is a right back.
McMullen is LM but he and King RM have been switching sides occasionally.

I'm nae manager but i've always thought it's a crackin tactic to switch creative players positions during a game. If they have a fitba brain and can time it i can't see why we shouldn't do it more especially with this squad.

Correct. Keeps the opposition fullbacks thinking if the wingers keep swapping sides.

Re: Taking shape

Bell must be going.
Agree with TEK regarding Fraser, reckon he'll be sold.
Donaldson will only go if it's a pay off.

I'd like a RB in, but that's just because I don't really rate Murdoch.  Toshney can be better than he's shown but there's no guarantee he will be & not sure if Ballantynes really gonna be good enough.  We're stuck with what we've got there.

Another CB, CF and another winger would be my wish list, can't see us getting all 3, maybe 2.

Re: Taking shape

If losing Fraser means we get some cash to pay off Donaldson and perhaps bring Quinn in then I'd take that.

I like Fraser but Stanton is just as good a player.

Re: Taking shape

I keep seeing comments about Quinn as if he is the solution to all our problems.  Is he that good?  Will he be match sharp if we bring him in?

I don't know anything about him.  He has never stood out if I've seen him play and I'm curious about the reasons behind so many people wanting to sign him.  Is it just cos he's better than Donaldson?

there doesn't seem to be a queue of other clubs wanting to snap him up before us

He is miles better than Donaldson and we are currently 1 injury away from him being in our starting 11. Quin is a major upgrade and I would 100% rather have Quinn than Donaldson.

I assumed he was better than Donaldson, but what I mean is why Quinn?  Why not someone else?

Is Quinn as good as or better than any of the players we have that can already play CB?  I honestly don't know.

I'm just asking because so any folk are wanting to sign him as if he is some sort of saviour and I'd like to know what they know about or see in him to make him someone we must sign?

Re: Taking shape

Mr macho,

He's not the be all and end all, for sure but what you are getting with him is a big strong centre back who talks others through a game. Ex captain at a team who beat us 6 zip last season and played a league above us

He's big experienced and will lead others. What more can we expect?

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Cheers Tangy.  I'm not doubting peoples thoughts on the guy, I was just wanting to know why they thought he was the answer.

Re: Taking shape

Quinn has a question mark over his fitness, in my view. Aye, he's a solid experienced player, but it might not be wise to invest in a player who presents injury concerns.

Re: Taking shape

Hysteria surrounding Quinn.
But never mentioned without including Donaldson.
If I see one more 'Donaldson gtf so we can get Quinn in' quote I'm gonna spit on my screen.
So I ask you this, what has Coll Donaldson actually done to warrant the hatred apart from the airshot v St Mirren. Is he going to be villified forever by the fans because of one mistake when he was caught out by a sloppy Dixon throw-in when he'd just come on. So do you remember when he last played? What did he do that made you hate him so much? Was he falling over, couldn't he run properly, was he unfit? I saw him play a couple of dev games in 2nd half of last season & he strolled them. It's mentioned that he 'fools about' during the warm-ups, doesn't look like he's taking it seriously', is that it? Give the guy a break, chances are he'll be here for the whole season so back him to back us, he must be shitting himself too anytime he plays, he'll be well aware of the fans' lack of confidence in him. There's every chance that come the end of the season he'll have played an important central defence back-up part in the team and all you distractors will be eating your words. Mark Durnan anyone?? Next dev game that you can get to try go along & watch him & pretend you're watching Quinn or something.

i admire your backing of Donaldson Smed. Its more than a fresh air swipe against st mirren, he was appalling in the semi against Hibs with a ridiculous handball penalty as well. To answer your points he does fall over over all the time, he is shocking in the air and ia very poor passer of the ball. Ask yourself this why will nobody take him on? I like you dont like to atack utd players but in this case im afraid he is shite.

Re: Taking shape

Donaldson is the worst centre half we have had since..... I don't even know. I'd rather have Timothy Van Der Muelen.

You cant compare him to Mark Durnan because they are two totally different defenders. Donaldson cant even run properly, he gives away stupid fouls, his distribution is gash but he actually thinks he is a footballer. His positioning scares the living daylights out of me, a sensible striker can tear him to shreds with a simple bit of movement. He laughed on the pitch with his mate Jason Cummings after they put us out of the Scottish Cup Semi=Final. He is also earning a wage that he is not justifying with his performances.

Sorry if we don't all rush to heap praise on this young man that has played a part in two of the worst seasons of football I've ever witnessed at Tannadice.

Re: Taking shape

The squad is starting to look a hell of a lot more balanced than the last two seasons.

I would like to keep Bell just for his experience in between the sticks and the lessons hopefully learned from 15/16 when we went with two rookie keepers.

Give big CD his severence and move on which is what we should have done last season and try and get Paul Quinn on board.
