And why?

I didn't see too much of Hamish in the flesh, so would say Billy Thomson is the best I've seen. We certainly haven't had a better keeper since.
Whether he was better than Hamish, older folk than me would need to decide, most seem to think Hamish was better.

From the time I've been a fan, Thomson, Hamish was brilliant too but just think Thommo edges it.
Alan Main went through a spell when he was a really brilliant keeper, he never recovered from that Tatran Presov game though when he had a nightmare.

Thompson was probably the better technically but Hamish played in our best ever team and was a great character. So I'd say Hamish.
Honourable mentions to Alan Main and Dusan Pernis

Just missed Hamish too, Thompson was my best lanky leavers and those tangerine socks over the black joggers with the green Belhaven top is still etched in my mind.
Shout out to Oohhh Aaahhh Alan Main and The Polish Nutter for fan favourites. Guido for that save in the 94 final

Hamish for me followed by thompson. 3rd would possibly be Sieb.
Worst comes from key, Jorgensen, colgan, jarvie

Hamish, without a doubt for me.
Growing up, Donald Mackay was a big hero of mine, although Sandy Davie competed for the goalie gloves at the same time.
But Hamish played for so long through my youth, and into the most successful era for the club. I was going to call my first child 'Hamish' in his honour, but it turned out she was a girl: still took a bit of convincing from my wife not to go for a Hamish variant.
Hamish played for almost two decades for us, unheard of these days, and even chipped in with a few goals. He saw off English Internationalist Peter Bonetti, who wee Jim signed after falling out with Hamish in the late 'seventies. As league winning keeper, he achieved many shut outs over that season, plus he had a porn moustache before we'd ever heard of Sieb.
He managed to shut big mouth Jimmy Greaves up, one of his greatest achievements.
If Hamish had been at a Glasgow club, he'd have won many Scotland caps.

Like Pat my first keepers were Mackay and Davie who were both excellent. Seem to recall singing Mackay was Scotland's No 1 (alongside Doug Smith, the best uncapped outfield player). Billy Thomson too was excellent. I have 2 football pictures on my wall "Going to Tannadice" and "Hamish, Tannadice Legend". It will always be Hamish for me

Hamish was raw and unique. Turning to the Shed with arms stretched giving the 3 claps and starting a "United" chant very regularly turns out to be a one off unfortunately.
Stylish saves were a Billy Thomson thing. Always remember one against Hadjuk Split away when he seemed almost in line horizontally with the bar.
Totally different styles.
Hamish got the fans going, helped win us 3 trophies and scored 3 goals in his time so Hamish gets my vote.
Never known any other player to have as many pets named after them.

At a Dens Derby recentlyish that we won 0-3 I was stood at times of excitement and starting songs. Kept hearing some old guy saying sit doon son. Eventually turned round near the end to find it was oor Hamish.
If I'd know it was him I said, I'd have sat on the fkn floor. Told him that, had a chuckle and have a photae that grabs the moment.
Great lad & the best ambassador we could possibly have.

Hamish for me too. Thankfully almost zero mention for Dykstra. Could never understand the love for him. Was regularly caught out with high balls and crosses.

Hamish followed by Billy the Fish. I would say an honourable mention for Nicky Weaver but I was at the 7-1 game at Ibrox where he flogged at least 2. The Monk was class as well.

This should be renamed the Hamish Mcalpine thread.

To be fair Billy Thomson could (and should) have won 3 medals in a year (St.Mirren,Gothenburg,Celtic).
But Utd bottled all of them.
He was a fine Keeper though.
Better than Hamish?I really don't know as i just missed Hamish between the sticks for us.
In some ways to me though i would have to say Hamish McAlpine is Dundee United.
Almost like the face of the club (or what the club was any roads to most of us on here growing up).
I wish i could explain that but some might catch my drift.
He just epitomises everything that was good about the club - brave, strong, formidable and oozing in character.Dare i say a wee bit 'different'?

Thomson was a fine keeper of that there is no debate but Hamish has the medals and legend status

Billy Thomson for me.
Special mention to Szamoltulski.
Zaluska and Combe were good keepers too.
